<독해1>
'be up to' has two meanings. The first means that someone is capable of doing a task or facing a
challenge. For example: "She's up to the job. In fact, she'll probably deliver the report early." Here the
woman is definitely able to do the job. She's 'up to' the job.
('be up to'는 2가지 의미가 있다.
The second meaning, and I think it is the more common one, is similar to 'to do something'. If a father
hears his children making a noise he might shout: "What are you up to?" and he wants to know what
they are doing. This meaning of 'to be up to' is often used when you are suspicious of something. You
think someone is behaving in a strange way and you don't know why they are doing something. For
example, a teacher sees three students go into an empty classroom. The teacher might say: "Did you
see those students go in that room? What are they up to? Let's go and have a look."
이러한 'to be up to'의 의미는 종종 무언가
Now, this phrase, 'to be up to' is also used to talk about someone's free time. For example: "What
are you up to this weekend?" is an informal way to ask what someone is doing over the weekend, to ask
if they have any plans.

While motorcycling through the Hungarian countryside, Cristo Falatti came up to a railway line just as
the crossing gates was coming down. While he sat idling, he was joined by a farmer with a goat, who the
farmer tethered to the crossing gate. A few moments later a horse and cart drawed up behind Falatti.
Behind them, there was a man in a sports car. When the train roared through the crossing, the horse
startled and bit Falatti on the arm. Not a man to be trifled with, Falatti responded by punching the horse in
the head. In consequence, the horse's owner jumped down from his cart and began scuffling with the
motorcyclist. The horse, which was not up to this sort of excitement, backed away briskly, smashing
the cart into the sports car. At this, the sports car driver leaped out of his car and joined the fray. The
farmer came forward to try to pacify the three fighting men. As he did so, rose the crossing gates and his
goat was strangled. At last report, the insurance companies were still trying to sort out the claims.
