세계 자살 예방의 날(World Suicide Prevention Day)입니다.

Suicide Prevention Day — A Shared Responsibility to Protect Life
Every year on September 10, we observe Suicide Prevention Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about the value of life and the urgent need to address rising suicide rates.
In 2003, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) designated this day to highlight the seriousness of suicide as a public health issue and to encourage national and community-level action.
South Korea also recognizes this day officially under the Act on Suicide Prevention and the Creation of a Culture that Respects Life, reaffirming its commitment to building a society that protects and values every life.
1. A Sobering Reality: Suicide Rates in South Korea
In South Korea, one person dies by suicide every 40 minutes. This is not someone else’s problem. It’s a national crisis—and a deeply personal one. Suicide is preventable, but only if we face it together.
2. Why Do People Die by Suicide?
Suicide is rarely the result of a single cause. It often stems from complex, overlapping struggles such as:
- Mental health challenges: Depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder
- Economic hardship: Job loss, debt, financial instability
- Social isolation: Loneliness, lack of support, disconnection from community
These factors can intensify over time, making early intervention and support essential.
3. What Can Be Done?
Suicide prevention is possible—and it starts with awareness and action:
- Expand mental health services: Make counseling, therapy, and medication more accessible
- Promote life-respecting education: Teach the value of life in schools, workplaces, and communities
- Strengthen crisis response systems: Identify warning signs early and intervene effectively
But most importantly, we all have a role to play.
4. What You Can Do Today
- Listen without judgment: When someone opens up, be present and compassionate
- Encourage professional help: Guide them toward counseling centers or hotlines
- Reach out: A simple “How are you?” can be a lifeline
5. In this era of social distancing, let’s stay emotionally connected. Call someone you care about. And if you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to ask for help. The first step to saving a life might be picking up the phone.

September 10 is more than a date—it’s a reminder. A reminder that life matters, and that even the smallest act of care can save someone in pain. Let’s build a world where no one feels alone in their darkest moment.
