The Appeal Renewed
You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. (Staying in Christ is the source of strength.)
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. (The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful people who will be able to teach others also. NASB) (Follow to lead, learn to share.)
Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. (Suffering in christian life is inevitable.)
No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. (Christian workers should prioritize the ministry first.)
Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. (Even athletes devote in practice and race according to the rules.)
The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. (Farmers harvest as much as they worked.)
Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this. (The truth is everywhere.)
Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. (The amazing, salvation of God, such as resurrection, has been done within the regular routines.) This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. (We might be chained or failed but God never fails.)
Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. (Our hard labor in Christ is to share the salvation with others for His glory.)
Here is a trustworthy saying: (Remember these.)
If we died with him, we will also live with him; (Life in death.)
if we endure, we will also reign with him. (Serve to reign, which is our mission there.)
If we disown him, he will also disown us; (Do not disown the Lord to be with Him.)
if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. (The Lord is faithful always. We must be faithful to Him.)
Dealing With False Teachers
Keep reminding God’s people of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. (Quarreling about words begins from ignorance of the truth and misunderstanding of the power of God, and doesn't do any good. Mt. 22:29.)
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. (The christian workers should be well equipped with the truth of the word.)
Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. (Don't get into the godlessness.)
Their teaching will spread like gangrene(dead flesh). (Bad teachings make irreversible damage.) Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have departed from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. (Some led people to destruction with wrong teachings on resurrection.)
Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” (But those who are saved will stay in the truth.)
In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. (There are good and evil, believers and unbelievers, faithful and traitor, all mixed up in this world.)
Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work. (The believers must separate themselves from the contaminated world.)
Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. (Fight against the temptation of lust, desire, and pride, and commit to the Lord with a pure heart.)
Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. (Restrain from the useless quarrels.)
And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. (But be positive to others in truth.)
Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. (Still be gentle and genuine with those opponents so that they might come to the Lord.)
