Tackling the challenges posed by air pollution is one of the most pressing issues we face when it comes to urban mobility. Large metropolises such as São Paulo and Jakarta are under the constant strain of an ever-growing fleet of vehicles, and their exhaust gases significantly impact the air quality of our densely populated cities.
대기오염 문제는 시급히 해결해야 할 문제이다. 인구밀도가 높은 상파울로와 자가르타는 늘어나는 자동차 배기가스로 도시의 대기 질에 많은 영향 받고 있다. 
 
It is therefore necessary to strike a balance between ever-increasing urban mobility and the need for good air quality. In this context, Brazil’s 50 years of experience with biofuels – chiefly bioethanol, the exhaust from which emits no particular matter – can help Indonesia to ease pollution.
증가하는 도시의 운송수단과 좋은 대기질의 필요성 사이에서 균형을 맞추는 것이 중요할 것이다. 브라질은 50년동안 바이오연료(주로 바이오에탄올)에 대한 경험으로 인도네시아에 많은 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
 
Every liter of gasoline sold in Brazil contains 27 percent of ethanol. In parallel, around 90 percent of the Brazilian fleet of passenger cars is equipped with FlexFuel engines, which can operate with any ethanol-gasoline blend. To put this in perspective, Brazil’s largest city São Paulo, comparable to Jakarta in terms of size and population, in 2021 managed to replace around 64 percent of the gasoline consumed by its 7-million-strong vehicle fleet with ethanol.
브라질에서 판매되는 휘발유 1리터에는 약27%의 에탄올이 포함되어 있다. 또한 브라질 승용차의 90%는 에탄올-가솔린 혼합사용이 가능한 Flex Fuel엔진이 장착되어있다.  자카르타와 규모와 인구수가 비슷한 상파울로는 2021년 700만대의 자동차가 소비하는 휘발유의 64%를 에탄올로 대체하였다. 
 
* 브라질의 Flex Fuel엔진은 에탄올100%를 사용하거나, 에탄올이 혼합된 휘발유를 선택적으로 사용할 수 있도록 연료 탱크가 2개로 나누어진 기술 입니다. 초창기 한국의 택시가 LPG와 휘발유를 선택적으로 사용 할 수 있도록 탱크가 2개로 나누어져 있던 것과 같은 방식 입니다.  
 
In the 1990s, São Paulo figured among the most polluted cities in the world, whereas in 2021, the city ranked 1179th in terms of air pollution, with general air quality similar to that of cities like Amsterdam, Berlin or Madrid.
1990년대 상파울로는 세계에서 가장 오염된 도시 중 하나였지만, 2021년 상파울로는 대기오염 측면에서 1179위를 차지했는데 이것은 암스테르담, 베를린, 마드리드와 유사한 수치이다. 
 
In our quest to reduce pollution and decarbonize the economy, biofuels will definitely have their share.
오염물질을 줄이고, 탈탄소 경제를 위한 방법에서 바이오연료는 분명한 포지션을 차지할 것이다.
 
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s launch in November 2022 of the Sugarcane Bioethanol Program for Energy Security, which aims to initially add 5 percent of ethanol (E5) to gasoline and then gradually increase it to 10 percent (E10) and 20 percent (E20), opens a new opportunity for energy cooperation. 
2022년11월 인도네시사 조코 대통령이 휘발유에 에탄올5%(E5)첨가 후 E10, E20으로 확대를 목표로 잡으며 바이오 에탄올 사업을 시작하였다.  
 
Experts from the Brazilian Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Association (UNICA) and the Brazil Ethanol Cluster (APLA), together with officials from the Brazilian ministries of mines and energy and foreign affairs, will discuss possible knowledge gaps and offer cooperation in transferring the Brazilian experience with ethanol, and identifying with Indonesian counterparts where and how our experience would be applicable or how it could be adapted when necessary.
브라질 사탕수수 및 바이오 에너지 산업 협회(UNICA)와 브라질 에탄올 클러스터(APLA)의 전문가들은 브라질 광산 및 에너지부, 외교부 관계자들과 함께 논의하여 에탄올에 대한 브라질의 경험을 인도네시아에 이전하고 협력을 제안할 것이다.
