Stress-shifting suffixes 2

앞서 영어강세 위치를 바꾸는 접미사들의 유형 중 첫번째 유형을 살펴 보았고

이번에는, 두 번째 유형인데, 이 접미사들은 접미사가 붙은 바로 앞의 음절의 무게에 따라, 그 음절이 heavy하면 바로 그 음절에, light하면 하나 더 앞 쪽의 음절에 강세를 주는 그런 접미사들입니다. (이 내용도 이번 9월 1회 박진이팀 모고에서 출제한 문제 내용 중 일부입니다.)

There is a group of suffixes that put the stress on the syllable immediately before them if that syllable is heavy as in (1). and if the syllable in question is light, then the stress moves one more syllable to the left as in (2).

(1) 접미사 앞의 음절이 heavy syllable일 떄:

--- 그 heavy한 음절에 강세

the suffix –al: re-fús-al, re-cí-tal, a-cci-dén-tal

the suffix –ency: e-mér-gency, de-pén-dency

the suffix –able: de-món-strable, pre-sén-table de-téc-table

(2) 접미사 앞의 음절이 light syllable일 때:

--- 그 light syllable바로 앞의 음절로 옮겨가서 강세

the suffix –al: séa-so-nal, prác-ti-cal

the suffix –ency: pré-si-dency, cóm-pe-tency

the suffix –able: ád-m-irable, cóm-pa-rable, pré-fe-rable

주의: sea-son-al, prac-tic-al로 음절구분하면 안됨

그러면 onset first principle 위배인데다가 강세가 엉뚱하게

*sea-són-al, *prac-tíc-al 이런 식으로 잘못된 곳에 강세를 주게됩니다.

결론:

Stress-shifting Suffix가 두 유형이 있는데,

[1] -ity, -ify, -ic같은 접미사들은 자신의 바로 앞의 음절의 무게에 상관없이 강세를 부여.

[2] -al, -ency, -able같은 접미사들은 자신의 바로 앞의 음절의 무게에 따라 강세를 준다. 바로 앞의 음절이 heavy하면 거기에 강세, light하면 하나 더 앞으로 가서 강세부여.
