🌍 ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY SHOULDN’T STOP AT THE FRONT DOOR OF BIG TECH.
For years, ordinary people have been encouraged to drive less, use less electricity, reduce waste, and make environmentally responsible choices.
Meanwhile, the artificial intelligence boom is driving massive investments in data centers that require enormous amounts of electricity and, in some cases, substantial quantities of water.
The scale is striking.
The International Energy Agency estimated that data centers consumed around 415 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2024—about 1.5% of the world's total electricity use. Demand is expected to grow significantly as digital services and AI expand.
And the consequences aren't just global. Communities near new facilities may face difficult questions about electricity supply, water resources, infrastructure, and who ultimately bears the costs.
AI can help advance medicine, scientific discovery, education, and many other fields. The answer isn't necessarily to stop technological progress.
But progress must come with responsibility.
If families are being asked to conserve energy and protect the environment, the world's largest technology companies should also be expected to measure their environmental impact, disclose meaningful data, invest in cleaner energy, conserve water, and be accountable for the consequences of their expansion.
The burden of protecting our planet shouldn't fall disproportionately on ordinary people while powerful corporations escape scrutiny.
Environmental responsibility must apply at every level—from individual choices to the decisions made by the world's largest companies.
Because real progress isn't simply about building more powerful technology.
It's about building a future in which technological advancement and a healthy planet can coexist.
