Les funérailles du cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan ont lieu à la cathédrale de Myeongdong à Séoul. Cet homme d’Eglise s’était notamment illustré par son engagement pour la démocratie et les droits de l’Homme contre le les régimes dictatoriaux en Corée du Sud dans les années 60-80.
Le premier cardinal sud-coréen s’est éteint lundi dernier à l’âge de 86 ans après avoir lutté pendant un mois contre la pneumonie. Son corps étendu dans une case en verre à l’intérieur de la cathédrale de Myongdong a attiré plus de 400 000 visiteurs qui voulaient rendre un dernier hommage au leader spirituel.
Les obsèques ont commencé à 10 heures du matin sous la présidence de l’archevêque de Séoul, le cardinal Cheong Jin-suk. 800 personnes, membres du clergé catholique ou citoyens ordinaires assistent à cette cérémonie de 90 minutes qui se déroule de manière « calme et simple » comme l’avait souhaité le défunt, et qui est retransmise en direct à la télévision.
Après ces funérailles, le cardinal sera enterré dans un cimetière catholique à Yongin en banlieue sud de Séoul. Après cette disparition, Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk devient le seul cardinal restant dans le pays qui compte 5 millions de catholiques, parmi une population de 48 millions d’habitants.

고 김수환 추기경의 장례미사가 20일 명동성당에서 각계 인사와 신도들이 참석한 가운데 거행됐습니다.
20일 오전 10시 명동대성당에서 정진석 추기경의 집전으로 열린 고 김수환 추기경의 장례미사는 교황 베네딕토 16세의 이름으로 교황장으로 엄숙히 치러졌습니다.
정진석 추기경은 강론을 통해 "김 추기경은 우리 사회의 큰 어른으로서 빛과 희망이 되었고 가톨릭 신자뿐 아니라 모든 한국인의 '사랑과 평화의 사도'였다"며 "사랑과 나눔을 그 어떤 것보다도 중요한 유산으로 남겨 주었다"고 고인을 애도했습니다.
이어 정 추기경이 교황의 추모사를 전하고, 정부 대표인 한승수 총리와 주교단과 사제단 대표, 평신도 대표 등이 고별사를 통해 고인의 업적과 인품을 기렸습니다.
장례미사가 열린 명동성당에는 대성당뿐 아니라 각 예배실과 성당 마당에 마련된 대형 스크린 앞에 만여명의 신자와 일반인들이 메운 채 고인의 마지막 길을 지켜봤습니다.
고인의 시신은 경기도 용인의 천주교 성직자 공원 묘원으로 운구돼 안장됩니다. |

A funeral service was held for the late Stephen Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan at Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul on Friday.
The Requiem Mass was celebrated by Nicholas Cardinal Cheong Jin-suk in the name of Pope Benedict the 16th at the request of the Vatican. The Holy See on Thursday appointed Cardinal Cheong as a special envoy to celebrate the funeral Mass on behalf of the pope.
The Mass included the showing of a two-minute memorial video of the late cardinal.
Some 800 people were in attendance, including Prime Minister Han Seung-soo, foreign diplomats and politicians.
On Thursday, the late cardinal’s body was placed in a casket engraved with his insignia. The body was open to the public during a ten-minute viewing before the casket was closed. He was dressed in the same vestment and mitre he wore when he was celebrating Mass while alive.
Some 387-thousand mourners paid their respects to the late cardinal as of Thursday.
Cardinal Kim will be laid to rest at a cemetery for Roman Catholic priests in Yongin, south of Seoul. The cardinal died Monday at the age of 87.
