참父母經 - 080. 정성과 투입

참아버님의 서대문형무소 출감과 청파동1가 전 본부교회 정착 이후 1957년 전반기까지는 새로운 단계의 발전을 위한 전열정비 기간이었다. 참아버님께서 전 본부교회를 중심으로 식구 교육에 심혈을 기울이셨고, 유효원 전 협회장의 원리강의와 더불어 전도에 주력하는 시기였다. 또한 자주 야외로 나가 훈련과 친화를 도모하였다. 신앙 열의와 예배, 원리강의 등 실질적인 신앙생활은 그 어느 시대보다도 열렬하였다. 참아버님께서는 점퍼 차림으로 예배를 집례하셨고, 좁은 성전이지만 예배 때면 밤낮없이 식구들이 가득 찼다. 그중 10여 명의 대학교수를 비롯해 지적 수준이 높은 부인식구들과 청년식구들이 많이 참석하였다. 전도활동은 자발적인 시스템에 의해 행하여졌다.

1 1957년부터 개척전도를 할 때 아버님은 하루에 2시간밖에 안 잤습니다. 식구들을 데리고 밤을 새워 가면서 엎드려 기도했습니다. 그래서 1960년대 새로운 세계로 출발할 때에 나 자신이 하늘 앞에 부끄럽지 않은 21년 노정을 승리하기 위해서 7년 동안 그 준비를 하고 훈련을 한 것입니다.

2 통일교회를 만든 이후에는 안방에 꼬부리고 앉아 새벽 3시 4시까지 매일같이 7년 동안 정성들여 나왔습니다. ‘네 정성을 다 퍼부어라! 지치도록 퍼부어라! 배고파도 퍼부어라! 졸음이 쏟아지는 가운데서도 퍼부어라! 하늘이 공인할 때까지.’ 이렇게 심정으로 씨를 심었기 때문에 오늘날 통일교인들이 받아들이지 못하더라도 이 씨는 하나님의 심정을 통해서 세계에 연결되어 나갈 것이다. 반드시 그것이 한때에 거두어질 날이 있으니 한국에서 못 거두거든 세계에서 거두리라고 생각했습니다.

3 통일교회 초창기에 아버님은 코피를 쏟으면서 기도했습니다. ‘역사적인 피를 대신해서 만민이 부끄러워할 뿐만 아니라 만민이 통곡하고도 갚을 수 없는 코피가 될 수 있다면 그것이 얼마나 영광이겠느냐!’ 이렇게 생각했습니다. ‘만민이 맞을 매를 내가 맞겠다고 아우성치는 자리에서 맞았다면 얼마나 영광의 매가 되겠느냐!’ 이렇게 생각했습니다. 사실이 그렇다는 것입니다. 그렇다면 애국자 중의 최고의 애국자는 어떤 사람입니까? 나라를 위해서 매를 열 대 맞은 사람이 있고 백 대 맞은 사람이 있다면 백 대 맞은 사람이 더 애국자입니다. 또 천 대 맞은 최고의 애국자가 있는데 만 대 맞은 최고의 애국자가 나타나면 그 사람에게 복이 붙게 되어 있습니다. 그런데 만 대 맞은 사람 앞에 십만 대 맞은 사람이 나오면 어떻게 되겠습니까? 그때에는 복을 갖지 않으려 해도 빼앗아 주는 것입니다. 복 받는 길이 다른 데에 있는 것이 아닙니다.

4 아버님이 청춘시대에 희생해서 준비한 것을 여러분이 이어받아 그야말로 승리의 자리, 만국이 찬양하는 자리에서 만국을 사랑하고 만국을 위해 살아감으로써 아버님 이상의 영광의 자리에 나아가야 됩니다. 앉아서 아무것도 안 하고 그저 복만 받겠습니까? 여러분은 이제 선두에 서야 됩니다. 아버님은 초창기에 식구들을 사악한 세상에서 흘러가는 사람들로 만들지 않기 위해 밤낮 훈련시켰습니다. 비 오는 날 관악산에 비를 철철 맞으면서 올라가는 것입니다. 올라가다가 미끄러져도 올라가는 것입니다. 안 올라가면 안 됩니다. 앞으로 국가와 싸우고 세계와 싸울 수 있는 큰 전장에 나서서 패배자, 패잔병이 되지 않게 하기 위해 훈련을 시켜 왔습니다. 별의별 욕을 다 먹으면서 그런 훈련을 시켰습니다.

5 아버님이 1957년에 식구를 만들 때에는 일대일 작전을 했습니다. 남는 것은 일대일 작전입니다. 한 사람을 놓고 강의할 때에도 백 사람, 천 사람을 놓고 강의하는 것과 같은 생각으로 했습니다. 그 한 사람에게 수천수만 명이 달려 있다고 생각했습니다. 내가 무슨 명령을 해도 들을 수 있는 사람으로 만들기 위해서는 내가 그만큼 정성들여서 그럴 수 있는 동기를 만들어 줘야 됩니다. 그렇게 될 때 3단계의 인연이 맺어지게 됩니다. 나와 여러분이 하나되고, 여러분과 지방에 있는 식구가 하나되는 것입니다. 이것이 되어야 합니다. 왜 3단계로 되어 있느냐? 하나님과 아담이 하나되고, 아담과 아담의 아들이 하나된 것과 마찬가지입니다. 그것이 원리입니다. 3단계 완성을 못하면 사위기대 완성권이 나오지 않습니다. 그러니 여러분은 여러분 같은 사람을 만들어 놓아야 됩니다.

6 아버님은 누가 나에게 심정적인 한마디만 얘기해도 통곡을 합니다. 그런 심정을 가졌습니다. 언제든지 하나님을 생각하면 가슴이 메이고 척추가 내리꽂히는 듯한 그런 무엇이 있습니다. 나 자신도 어쩔 수 없습니다. 그런 영역이 있기 때문에 기도를 안 하더라도 생활 전부는 기도생활입니다. 그렇기 때문에 목메어 쓰러지고, 나무를 붙들고 전신주를 붙들고 억제할 수 없는 하나님의 기가 막힌 사정, 억울하고 분통한 사정이 얼마든지 있습니다. 어떤 때에는 몸을 지탱하지 못할 정도의 심정을 체휼하게 됩니다. 그 이유를 알아보면 그 시간에 하나님의 슬픈 일이 있는데, 어느 곳에서 그런 일이 벌어지는지 알려 준다는 것입니다. 그것은 내가 지상에 중심적인 책임을 지고 왔으니만큼 영육을 중심하고 수습해주고 심정적 터전을 연결지어야 할 사명이 있기 때문에 내게 반드시 연결시키고 통고하는 것입니다.

7 통일교회는 전부 보리밥을 먹기 때문에 거지들까지도 보리밥을 준다고 가지 말라고 한 때도 있었습니다. 맨 아래에서부터 시작하여 한 걸음 한 걸음 딛고 올라왔습니다. 내가 생일잔치를 하지 않았습니다. 이 땅 위에 태어난 사람 가운데 생일도 못 지내고 죽어 간 사람이 얼마나 많습니까? 그런 것을 생각할 때, 내가 그런 사람들을 동정해 주고 영계에 가서 인연을 맺기 위해서 3년 동안 생일날 금식을 했다는 것입니다. 그리고 옛날에는 이 단상에서 양복을 입고 설교하지 않았습니다. 노동복으로부터 출발했습니다. 설교를 할 때에는 한 사람이 있더라도 그 한 사람을 놓고 피땀을 흘리고 눈물을 흘리며 정성을 다해 설교했지, 지나가는 손님 맞듯이 하지 않았습니다. 지금은 그러한 사연들이 그립습니다.

8 아버님은 일생에 걸쳐 전도하기 위해 모든 것을 투입해 왔습니다. 환자가 병원에 오면 의사는 잘 시간도 잊어버리고 그 환자를 위해서 생명을 투입해야 되는 책임과 의무가 있는 것과 마찬가지로 아버님은 통일교회 식구들을 기르기 위해서 밤낮을 잊어버립니다. 아침밥을 먹으면서 저녁밥을 먹는다고 생각할 때가 많습니다. 그러한 전통적인 역사가 있습니다. 여러분이 전도할 때 흘러가는 물도 쉬며 찬양하고 싶다고 할 수 있고 고기들까지도 여러분 밥상에 올라갔으면 좋겠다고 동정할 수 있는 환경을 남겨 놓아야만 됩니다. 그렇게 되면 그것들을 먹고살던 사람이 움직이기 시작하는 것입니다. 그러니 자기가 책임진 곳은 안 들어가 본 집이 없게끔 열 바퀴, 백 바퀴를 돌아야 됩니다. 하나님은 천 바퀴, 만 바퀴를 돌면서 인간을 찾아오셨습니다. 여러분이 그렇게 해야 하나님의 아들딸이 되어 상속을 받을 수 있습니다. 그러니 여러분도 마을 마을마다 찾아가 백 바퀴, 천 바퀴를 돌겠다고 하고, 돌지 못했으면 눈물을 흘리면서 회개를 해야 됩니다. 남의 심령을 책임진 지도자들은 그렇게 해야 됩니다. 그래야 올바른 참부모, 종적인 참부모와 횡적인 참부모의 도리를 대신자로서 이어 나가게 될 때 구부러지지 않고 바른 방향을 갖춰서 자리를 잡고 따라오려고 한다는 것입니다.

9 아버님이 1957년쯤에는 한 400명의 식구를 위해 언제든지 기도해 주었습니다. 요즘에는 내가 기도를 안 하려고 합니다. 그렇지만 어느 한계점까지 넘어가기 위해서는 기도해 줘야 됩니다. 그래서 기도하면 심령 상태가 어떻다는 것이 들어옵니다. 기도를 하게 된다면 반드시 자기와 관계된 식구들은 가지와 같기 때문에 하나님이 가르쳐 줍니다. 정성을 들여 보십시오. 식구들을 위해서 정성을 들이면 그들의 심령 상태가 상하게 될 때에는 별의별 모양으로 보여 줍니다. 고개를 숙인 모습도 있고, 보자기를 쓴 모습도 있고, 여러 가지로 보여 줍니다. 기분 좋은 일이 있는 식구는 벌써 웃는 모습이 보입니다. 또 슬픈 일이 있어도 그렇습니다.

10 정성을 들이는 시간이 있어야 됩니다. 새벽에 일어날 때에는 시신경이 쉬다가 깨어나는 경계선이 있기 때문에 반드시 보여 주는 것입니다. 그것을 보고 ‘오늘은 교회에 무슨 일이 있겠구먼. 오늘은 이런 식구가 오겠구나.’라는 것을 알아야 됩니다. 유능한 의사는 환자의 얼굴색만 봐도 무슨 병이 있는지를 압니다. 걷는 것만 봐도 압니다. 그런 것처럼 여러분도 영적인 안테나가 높아서 감정 능력이 있어야 됩니다. 그러기 위해서는 정성을 들여야 됩니다. 기도가 참 무서운 것입니다. 말없이 그 환경을 완전히 점령하는 것이 기도입니다. 아버님은 어디를 가나 자기 목표를 중심삼고 24시간 기도하는 것입니다. 밥을 먹으면서도, 숨을 쉬면서도 기도합니다. 그것이 자기를 위한 것이 아닙니다. 인류를 위하고 하나님을 위한 것입니다. 그런 일념을 중심삼고 정성들이고 사방을 한 바퀴 돌면 평형을 이루어서 원형이 됩니다. 내가 기도를 함으로써 올라가면 이 권내는 하늘이 주관할 수 있는 권이 되기 때문에 이 권내의 양심적인 인사들은 끌려옵니다. 만나면 자기도 모르게 끌려온다는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 언제나 정성들여야 됩니다.

真のお父様の西大門刑務所出監と、青坡洞一街の旧本部教会定着以降、一九五七年の前半期までは、新しい段階への発展のために体制を整える期間だった。真のお父様は、旧本部教会を中心に、食口教育に心血を注がれ、劉孝元協会長の原理講義とともに、伝道に注力する時期だった。また、よく野外に行っては訓練をし、親睦も深めた。信仰の熱意や礼拝、原理講義など、実質的な信仰生活は、この上なく熱烈なものだった。真のお父様は、ジャンパー姿で礼拝を執り行われ、狭い聖殿であったが、礼拝の時には昼夜を問わず、食口であふれ返った。その中には、十数人の大学教授をはじめ、高学歴の婦人食口と青年食口が多く参加していた。伝道活動は、自発的に行われていた。
 
１ 一九五七年から開拓伝道をする時、お父様は一日に二時間しか眠りませんでした。食口たちを連れて、夜を明かしながらひれ伏して祈りました。そうして、一九六〇年代に新しい世界へと出発する際、私自身が天のみ前に恥ずかしくない二十一年路程を勝利するために、七年間、その準備をしながら訓練したのです。
 
２ 統一教会をつくったあとは、部屋にかがんで座り、毎日のように七年間、午前三時、四時まで精誠を尽くしてきました。「私の精誠をすべて注ごう。倒れるまで注ごう。おなかがすいても注ごう。眠気が襲ってきても注ごう。天が公認するときまで」、このように心情で種を植えつけたので、今日、統一教会の教会員たちに受け入れられなかったとしても、この種は、神様の心情を通して世界に連結されていくでしょう。必ずそれがいつか刈り取られる日が来るので、韓国で刈り取ることができなければ、世界で刈り取られるだろうと考えました。
 
３ 統一教会の草創期に、お父様は鼻血を流しながら祈りました。「歴史的な血に代わって、万民が恥ずかしく思うだけでなく、万民が痛哭しても報いることのできない鼻血になり得るなら、それはどれほど光栄だろうか」と考えました。「万民が受けるむちを私が受けるのだと叫ぶ立場で打たれるなら、どれほど栄光のむちになるだろうか」と考えたのです。事実がそうです。
 
それでは、愛国者の中で最高の愛国者とはどのような人でしょうか。国のためにむちを十回打たれた人と、百回打たれた人がいれば、百回打たれた人のほうが愛国者です。また、千回打たれた最高の愛固者がいても、もし一万回打たれた人が現れれば、その人が福をもっていくのです。それでは、一万回打たれた人の前に、十万回打たれた人が現れればどうなるでしょうか。その時は、福をもつまいとしても与えられるのです。福を受ける道は、その道しかありません。
 
４ お父様が青春時代に犠牲になって準備したものを、皆さんが引き継ぎ、それこそ勝利の場、万国が称賛する場で、万国を愛し、万国のために生きていくことによって、お父様以上の栄光の場に出ていかなければなりません。座って何もせずに、ただ福だけを受けられるでしょうか。皆さんは、これから先頭に立たなければなりません。お父様は、草創期に、邪悪なこの世で流れていく人にならないよう、食口たちを昼夜訓練したのです。
 
雨の降る日、ざあざあと降る雨に打たれながら冠岳山（クァナクサン）に登るのです。登る途中で滑ったりしても登るのです。登らなければなりません。今後、国家と闘い、世界と闘う広大な戦場に進み出て、敗北者や敗残兵にならないようにするために訓練してきました。ありとあらゆる批判を受けながら、そのような訓練をしたのです。
 
５ お父様は、一九五七年に食口を育てるとき、一対一作戦をしました。残るものは一対一作戦です。一人の前で講義をする時も、百人、千人の前で講義をすると考えてしたのです。その一人に数千、数万人の人がつながっていると考えました。私がどんな命令をしても聞くことができる人にするためには、私がそれだけの精誠を尽くし、そのようにできる動機をつくってあげなければなりません。
 
そうなる時に、三段階の関係が結ばれるようになります。私と皆さんが一つになり、皆さんと地方にいる食口が一つになるのです。このようにならなければなりません。なぜ三段階になっているのでしょうか。神様とアダムが一つになり、アダムとアダムの息子が一つになったことと同じなのです。それが原理です。三段階の完成ができなければ、四位基台の完成圏が現れません。ですから皆さんは、自分と同じような人をつくっておかなければなりません。
 
６ お父様は、誰かが私に心情的なことを一言だけ語っても痛哭します。そのような心情をもっています。いつでも神様のことを思うと胸が詰まり、背骨がきしんで突き刺さるかのような、何かがあります。私自身も、どうすることもできません。そのような領域があるので、祈らなくても、生活のすべてが祈りの生活です。ですから、喉が締めつけられて倒れ、木にしがみつき、電信柱にしがみつく、このような神様の抑え難い唖然とする事情があり、悔しくて胸が痛む事情がいくらでもあるのです。ある時は、体を支えていられないほどの心情を体恤するのです。
 
その理由を調べてみると、その時間に神様にとって悲しい出来事があるのですが、どの場所でそのようなことが起きるのかを教えてくれるのです。それは、私が中心的な責任をもって地上に来たので、霊肉を中心として収拾してあげ、心情的基盤を連結させなければならない使命があるがゆえに、必ず私に連結させて通告するのです。
 
７ 統一教会はみな、麦御飯を食べているので、乞食たちまでが「行っても麦御飯しかくれないので、行ってはいけない」と言った時もありました。一番下から始めて、一歩一歩踏み上がってきました。私は誕生日のお祝いをしませんでした。この地上に生まれた人の中で、誕生日も迎えられずに死んでいった人がどれほど多いでしょうか。そのようなことを考えると、私がそのような人たちに同情してあげ、霊界に行って関係を結ぶために、三年間、誕生日に断食をしたのです。
 
また、昔は、この壇上では背広を着て説教をしませんでした。労働服から出発したのです。説教をする時、一人しかいなかったとしても、その一人を前にして、血の汗を流し、涙を流しながら精誠を尽くして説教をしたのであって、通りすがりの客を迎えるようにはしませんでした。今では、そのようなことが懐かしく思われます。
 
８ お父様は、伝道するために、生涯にわたってあらゆるものを投入してきました。患者が病院に来れば、医者は、寝るのを忘れてその患者のために生命を投入する責任と義務があるように、お父様は、統一教会の食口たちを育てるためには昼夜も忘れるのです。朝御飯を食べていながら、これは夕御飯だと思うことがたくさんありました。そのような伝統的な歴史があります。
 
皆さんが伝道するとき、流れていく水もとどまって称賛したいと思い、魚たちまでも、皆さんの食膳に上がれたらよいと思って同情し得る環境を残さなければなりません。
 
そうなると、それらを食べて暮らしている人が動き出すのです。ですから、自分が責任をもつ所は、入ったことのない家がないほど、十回でも、百回でも回らなければなりません。
 
神様は千回、万回、回りながら、人間を探し求めてきました。皆さんがそうしてこそ、神様の息子、娘となって、相続を受けることができるのです。ですから、皆さんも村々を訪ねて、百回、千回、回るのだと思い、回ることができなければ、涙を流しながら悔い改めなければなりません。人の心霊に責任をもつ指導者たちは、そのようにしなければなりません。そうして、正しい真の父母、縦的な真の父母と横的な真の父母の道理を代身者として受け継いでこそ、（食口たちは）曲がることなく、まっすぐな方向に合わせて位置をつかみ、従ってこようとするのです。
 
９ お父様は、一九五七年頃、約四百人の食口のためにいつでも祈ってあげていました。最近は、私は祈らないようにしています。しかし、ある限界点まで越えていくためには、祈ってあげなければなりません。祈ると、どのような心霊状態なのかが分かります。祈れば、自分と関係している食口たちは枝のようなものなので、神様が必ず教えでくれます。
 
精誠を捧げてみてください。食口たちのために精誠を捧げれば、彼らの心霊状態が傷つくときは、様々な姿で見せてくれます。うなだれている時もあり、ふろしきで顔を覆う時もあり、様々な姿で見せてくれるのです。気分の良いことがあった食口の場合は、すぐに笑う姿が見えます。また、悲しいことがある時もすぐに分かります。
 
 10 精誠を捧げる時間がなければなりません。明け方に起きる時は、休んでいた視神経が目覚める境界線にあるので、必ず見せてくれます。それを見て、「きょうは教会で何かが起きそうだ。きょうはこのような食口が来るようだ」といったことを感知しなければなりません。
 
有能な医者は、患者の顔色だけを見ても、何の病を患っているのか分かります。歩く姿だけを見ても分かります。そのように、皆さんも霊的なアンテナを高くして、鑑定する能力がなければなりません。そのためには、精誠を捧げなければなりません。
 
祈りというのは、本当に恐ろしいものです。無言でいながら、その環境を完全に占領するのが祈りです。お父様は、どこに行っても、自分の目標を中心として二十四時間祈ります。御飯を食べながらも、息をしながらも祈ります。それは、自分のためのものではありません。人類のためであり、神様のための祈りなのです。
 
そのような一念を中心として、精誠を込めて四方を一周すれば、平衡を保って円形になります。私が祈ることによって上がっていけば、この圏内は天が主管し得る領域になるので、この圏内の良心的な人士たちは引っ張られてくるのです。会えば、我知らず引っ張られてくるのです。ですから、いつでも精誠を捧げなければなりません。

After he was released from Seodaemun Prison, True Father lived at the original Cheongpa-dong Headquarters Church. The years that followed, until early 1957, were a period when he made preparations to advance to a new stage. During this time True Father devoted all his energy to educating members. He focused on outreach activities, with Eu Hyo-won, the first church president, giving lectures and teaching the Divine Principle. In addition, True Father often took members on recreational outings in nature to cultivate their physical discipline and their relationship to the creation.

The life of faith of the members was more intense at that time than at any other time in the history of our church. They attended church services, participated in outreach activities, and studied the Divine Principle. True Father himself led the church services. Although he wore a humble work jacket and the church hall was small, it was always filled with members day and night. In the congregation were many women, many young people, and intellectuals, including university professors. Everyone participated in outreach activities as volunteers, each with his or her own method of witnessing.
 
1 During the time of pioneering in 1957 I slept only two hours a day. In those days I would pray together with the members all night. It was in the midst of a seven-year period during which I prepared and trained myself so that in the 1960s, when we would move into a new world, I would not be ashamed before heaven and would be victorious in my 21-year course. 2 After I founded the Unification Church, I offered prayers and conditions of devotion every day for seven years, staying up in my bedroom until 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. My heart was determined, "I will pour out all my sincerity and devotion. No matter how tired and exhausted I am, I will continue. Even when I am hungry, I will pour out my whole self. I will not let sleep overcome me. I will continue until I build a foundation that meets with heaven's official approval."

My devotion with this kind of heart sowed seeds that were connected to God's heart. They will bring forth growth throughout the world. Even if the members of the Unification Church today cannot inherit those seeds, some day without fail their fruits will be harvested, if not in Korea then somewhere else in the world. 3 In the early days of the Unification Church, I prayed so intensely that my nose bled. I thought, "Even though I am bleeding like this for the sake of human history, if that blood moves people to feel indebted to me and so ashamed that they cry bitterly that they cannot repay it, that would be a glorious thing." I also thought, "It is an honor to be whipped on behalf of the people of the world." This is true.

Who is the patriot among all patriots? If two people suffer a whipping for the sake of the nation, one receiving 10 lashes and the other 100 lashes, the latter is a greater patriot. A person who receives 1,000 lashes is an even greater patriot, and if someone appears who is whipped with 10,000 lashes, he will be greater still; all the nation's fortune will adhere to him. Then, what if another man comes and is whipped with 100,000 lashes? Even if this person tries not to take it, all the nation's fortune will be given to him. Don't seek fortune in any other way. This is the way to receive it. (047-334, 1971/08/30)
 
4 You have to inherit what I prepared when I sacrificed myself in my youth. By so doing, you should advance to a victorious position where all nations praise you. If you live for the sake of all nations, loving them, you will surely attain victory. It is my earnest desire for you to advance to a position even higher and more glorious than mine. But do you want to receive that fortune by just sitting around doing nothing? It is time for you to stand on the front line.

During the early years of the church, I trained members day and night so that they would not be swept away into the evil world. For example, one day when we climbed up Mt. Gwanak, it was raining hard. The path was very slippery, but despite the difficulties we climbed all the way to the top. This is how I trained the members to fight on the battlefield against the nation and the world, so that they would not become remnants of a defeated army. I trained them like this despite all the accusations that came against me. (143-331, 1986/03/21)
 
5 In 1957 when I was educating the church members in Korea, I used what I call the one-on-one strategy. It is a strategy that will last until the end. I gave my lecture in front of one person as if I were giving it to hundreds and thousands of people, thinking that upon that person would depend hundreds and thousands of people. In order to raise that person as an authentic disciple, I had to pray for him and do sufficient conditions of devotion on his behalf to motivate him to become such a disciple.

In such a case, three levels of relationships are created: me, you and the local members. First, there must be unity between you and me; then you should bring unity among the local members and yourself. Why three levels? It is because originally God and Adam should have been united and then Adam and his sons should have been united. That is a principle. Without reaching perfection through three stages, the realm of perfection of the four-position foundation cannot appear. That is why you have to create others like yourself. (096-285, 1978/02/13)
 
6 If someone says even one word that touches my heart, I might burst into tears. I have such a heart. There is something in my heart that makes me choke up whenever I think of God. I cannot help this. Since I have such a quality within myself, my life itself is prayer even when I do not pray in a formal way. That is why I always feel God's sorrowful and suffering heart, and why I sometimes fall down, choked with emotion, or grab hold of a tree or a telephone pole while my tears flow uncontrollably. At those times I feel God’s heart so intensely that I can no longer stand upright.

When I looked into it, I realized that something happened to God that made Him extremely sad. When I prayed about it, He let me know what happened and where. Since I have the mission of the person with the central responsibility on earth to make a foundation of heart, and to deal with both spiritual and physical issues required to make this foundation, God always lets me know His actual situation. 7 There was a time when even beggars told each other that they should not go to the Unification Church because the food we offered them was so meager. Yet, we moved up from the bottom step by step.

In the early days I did not even celebrate my birthday. I thought, how many people have died never able to celebrate their birthday while on earth? That is why I fasted on my birthday for three years, to sympathize with them and to connect with them when I meet them in the spirit world.

Also, in the early days I did not wear a suit and tie when I spoke from the pulpit on Sundays. I began my ministry wearing laborer's clothes. Whenever I spoke, whether a sermon or lecture, I invested my sweat and tears, offering my utmost sincerity, even if only one person was listening. I did not treat people as guests who were just passing by. I now miss those early days. (141-056, 1986/02/16)
 
8 Throughout my life, I invested everything I had to witness to people. When a patient comes to see a doctor at the hospital, the doctor has the responsibility and obligation to invest his life for that patient, even forgetting to sleep. Likewise, in raising the church members I forgot about whether it was day or night. I often ate breakfast thinking I was eating dinner. There is such a tradition in the history of our church.

When you are witnessing, create an environment in which even nature desires to praise you, in which the water in the river wants to stop flowing to praise you and the fish in the river want to be on your table so you can eat them. Then the people who eat those fish will start responding to you. This is the kind of foundation you should leave behind.

Go around the area you are responsible for 10 or even 100 times. Visit every single house without exception. God goes around the world 1,000 or even 10,000 times searching for His children. How can you become God's sons and daughters and inherit from Him unless you do the same? So in every town you visit, you should want to go around to all the houses in the area 100 and even 1,000 times, and when you are unable to do so, you should repent in tears. As a leader responsible for the heart and spirit of others, you need to do that. That is the way of a representative of the vertical True Parent and the horizontal True Parents. Continue in this way, and your members will take the proper direction without any deviation, find their position, and follow your example. (220-305, 1991/10/20)
 
9 In 1957, I prayed individually for about 400 members every day. These days I no longer pray like that. However, in those days I needed to pray for them in order to help them transcend a certain level. When I prayed, I could understand their individual spiritual situations. When I prayed, God would teach me because the members were connected to me like branches.

You too should pray for your members, offering your utmost devotion. When you pray for them, if any of them is spiritually injured, God will show you glimpses of their spiritual situations in all kinds of forms: they might be downcast, or have their face covered with a cloth, and so on. When good things are happening to them, you will see them smiling; when they are sad, you will see them with a sad appearance. (070-181, 1974/02/09)
 
10 Always take the time to offer sincere devotions, prayers and other conditions. Offer them when you get up at dawn, when you are on the borderline between the spiritual world and the physical world and your optic nerves are just starting to function after a restful night. The spirit world will show you something spiritual. Through such experiences, you will be given foreknowledge. Then you will be able to predict, "Today this or that will happen in the church," or "today such and such a person will come."

A capable doctor can tell what kind of illness their patients have just by looking at their complexion, or by seeing how their patients walk. Likewise, your spiritual antenna must be long and have the sensitivity to appraise things. For this to happen, you need to offer conditions of devotion.

Prayer is truly powerful. Prayer allows you to be in complete control of your environment without having to say a single word. Before I go somewhere, I always pray for 24 hours focused on my goal. I pray even while I am eating and resting. I do not pray for my own sake; I pray for the sake of humanity and for God.

Once after I offered such prayers with a single resolve, I visited all our churches throughout the nation. By doing so I brought the churches into a sphere of equilibrium. My prayers elevated the churches into a realm under heaven’s sovereignty, where conscientious people could be pulled to them. That is why when they met you, they were drawn to you without knowing the reason. That is why I say that you always need to offer conditions of devotion.
