The South Korea winger Lee Chung-yong will join up with the Bolton Wanderers squad next week after he was last night granted a work permit allowing him to complete a £2.2m transfer from FC Seoul.
Lee agreed personal terms on a three-year contract with Bolton during a visit to the Premier League club last week, when he also underwent a successful medical.
The player returned to the Korean capital on Saturday in order to finalise the paperwork for the deal to go through and now that has been done he will return to England in the coming days to be officially introduced as a Bolton player.
The 21-year-old is expected to make his debut for Gary Megson's side in their friendly against Hibernian on 8 August.
Lee is Bolton's fifth summer signing following the arrival of Paul Robinson from West Bromwich, Sean Davis from Portsmouth, Sam Ricketts from Hull City and Zat Knight from Aston Villa.
Bolton have been in talks to sign Lee since the end of last season having being impressed with what they saw of him in a collection of DVDs sent to the club by a representative of the midfielder as well as up-close after he was scouted playing for South Korea in a friendly in Seoul.
Lee has 15 caps for his country having made his international debut at the age of 19, and is widely regarded as being one of the country's leading young talents.
He is renowned for his pace and vision and was widely expected to join a European side after his encouraging performances for South Korea during the Beijing Olympics last year.
Manchester City also showed interest in the player this summer but he opted for Bolton after being guaranteed a first-team place for the coming season.
"It has been my dream to play in England so I am so happy," said Lee after completing his medical last week. "I now need to get to know my team-mates and adjust quickly to the style of play in the Premier League."
Lee's move to Bolton has created much excitement in Korea, particularly as he is the first player to move directly from the K-League to England's top flight.
Indeed, such was the "honour" of seeing such a transfer take place that FC Seoul encouraged Bolton to finalise the deal before the end of the transfer window and despite the fact the Korean league is in progress.
Lee was even omitted from the side that faced Manchester United at the Seoul World Cup stadium on Friday. The player is said to understand English perfectly and is in the process of learning fully how to also speak the language.
