As if there wasn't enough history in this colonial city and in this classic Lakers-Celtics rivalry, the opportunity to
make more has arrived for Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson.
Somewhat inaccurately defined by their separate determinations to win championships — Bryant portrayed as
borderline maniacal in his single-mindedness, Jackson long criticized for playing only with stacked decks — they
are here on the cusp of validation again. Bryant can join a short list of modern NBA stars to have four titles: Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan. Jackson can
break his tie with Red Auerbach and stand alone with 10 NBA coaching championships.
Then again, they could have done those things in 2004, when the Lakers last reached the NBA Finals. The funny
thing is Bryant and Jackson aren't bitter about that defeat because they don't think they deserved to win that one.
That's how it is when you are the truest sort of competitor: one who judges success foremost from within.
. . .
.....
The last time they made it this far, Bryant and Jackson didn't give their individual best. Bryant was a great player but
not a good teammate — in part because Jackson ignored Bryant's petulance amid his sexual-assault case instead
of grasping it was a cry for attention. For two people very much in touch with themselves, there was no peace within
— so they went without. A harmonious Detroit team took the title in five games.
"Kobe was a young player who was stubborn and wanted to do things his way," said Brian Shaw, Bryant's former
teammate and now a Lakers assistant coach. "And you had a coach who obviously had success and who had an
ego himself, who was stubborn and stuck in his ways. So neither one of them was willing to give."
Shaw has a simple summation of what changed: "There's a mutual respect now that wasn't there before." And this
season, Bryant and Jackson became full partners through a different crisis.
. . .
.....
Jackson showed up for work on the first day of playoff preparations having made an interesting wardrobe choice.
He was, in a manner of speaking, wearing Bryant's jacket.
Black with gold piping, Bryant's personal Nike logo on the right shoulder, the warmup jacket was from Bryant's new
clothing line and looked a little too sporty for a 62-year-old grandfather of three with two artificial hips who prefers
comfy plaid flannel.
Yet it was a show of unity on the day that the best part of the season began for Bryant and Jackson, two serious
basketball geeks. Jackson referred to his postseason work with Bryant as a "synching of the minds."
As much as he was Bryant's offseason and preseason sounding board, Jackson didn't totally get it. During a
tumultuous training camp amid ongoing trade rumors, it appeared one day that Bryant's locker had been cleaned
out. Even while not understanding Bryant's defiance, Jackson oozed serenity.
"I thrive on these kinds of situations," Jackson said then, smiling. "This is what made me grow to be 6-8."
Jackson has always maintained Bryant has a good heart, and what the coach asked entering this season was for
Bryant to open that heart to this team. Bryant did — and began to like the effort he was seeing and the good times he
was feeling.
Did his small heart grow three sizes in one day? No, this was more about his head — a hard one Jackson has
been pounding with books on leadership for years. More than anything else, they emphasize going with the flow
instead of resisting all the time.
Maybe because he resisted so much before this season, Bryant was ready for something different. Maybe he felt
he made his point about General Manager Mitch Kupchak needing to be more aggressive. But once the season
started, the Lakers got a new whole-hearted effort from Bryant that encompassed more than practice repetitions and
points scored.
"He has shown a lot more patience this year, especially with his teammates," Shaw said. "He's a lot more
compassionate when they make mistakes. He was very critical of them in the past. This year, he's a lot more
constructive instead of yelling at them or even gesturing with body language. And he's doing things with them off the
court."
. . .
.....
Bryant has improved via his standard hard work. He took up this season with Jordan's trainer, Tim Grover, and has
not missed a game. The Bryant fire that Jackson has always admired remains — only now there is something cool,
too.
He can rule the court with peace as well as war.
Jackson learned long ago to be laissez-faire, getting places faster without having to push or drag people along. But
how did that click in for Bryant now?
Jackson's estimated age for maturity in NBA players is 28. Jordan didn't win a title until 28. O'Neal didn't win a title
until 28. When Bryant ranted so far from a title at the end of last season, he was 28.
Something happens as basketball mortality starts to threaten, and it makes the greats turn from the mirror toward that window.
It was time for something with Bryant to change, and Jackson could see even better than Bryant himself what that was.

The Lakers
D-1
Let's go LAKERS!
