Wine & Spirits
Folly is typically a giant wine, but this vintage takes a gentler tact than usual. The alcohol and the massive black fruit flavor balance the impact of the tannins; the acidity is mellow and soft. Give it at least four years to come together.
Vina Montes Syrah Folly 2005
WS 94
"Dense and layered, with lots of fig, black currant paste, mocha and black licorice flavors, all supported by muscular, but ripe and well-imbedded structure. Long, dark finish has lots of power in reserve, but shows fine harmony already. The best balanced vintage so far for this powerful Syrah. Drink now through 2013. 2,500 cases made." (WS)
WA 94
"The 2005 Folly is 100% Syrah from the slopes of the Apalta Vineyard. It was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque purple, it has an expressive display of meat, game, cedar, sage, and blueberry. Structured for the long haul, it requires 5-7 years of additional cellaring. The fruit is ripe and sweet, the balance impeccable, and the finish lasts for nearly a minute. It should be at its best from 2015 to 2030.
Under the enlightened leadership of Aurelio Montes, the Montes winery remains one of the standard-bearers for Chilean wines. The Carmenere-based Purple Angel is one of the two or three best of its type; the Folly is arguably Chile’s finest Syrah, and the Montes Alpha M one of the Cabernet-based icons." (WA)
IWC92
"($93; 100% syrah) Deep ruby. Powerful blackberry and cassis aromas are complicated by smoked meat, vanillin oak and candied licorice. Supple, sweet and broad, with luscious blackberry and cherry preserve flavors, velvety tannins and great depth. Really stains the palate and finishes with outstanding persistence. An extremely impressive wine, but the price stings." (IWC)

Winery Notes:
Aurelio Montes, our partner and gifted winemaker, knew it all along. Montes Folly was destined to shine by the hand of Aurelio, it was in his DNA since he was born. This sparked his intuition which, from his student days, became obsessed with the Apalta Valley and determined to prove it was the best terroir for reds in all of Chile, a fact few would dispute today.
Aurelio’s intuition also led him to plant Syrah in the higher slopes of our Apalta Mountain Estate. Thus the Montes Folly name was born: The conventional wine growers and trade considered it "Folly" to plant Syrah, an untested variety in the region, and double "Folly" to do so in the higher slopes, extremely expensive to clear, plant and grow. The genius of Aurelio, however, had us all firmly believing from the start that Montes Folly would be the wild dream we sought, the perfect partner to our beloved Montes Alpha "M".
Montes Folly, another bold pioneering step forward, is a wild wine of truly exceptional quality, of a similar excellence level to Montes Alpha "M" but so different in style as the untamed sound of a saxo in a jazz concert would compare to a Stradivarius violin at the opera. One wild, one classical. Both stunning. Totally different. Both reaching for wine heaven, Olympus, in its own style.
Montes Folly is grown on the very highest slopes of our "la Finca de Apalta" vineyard, in Apalta Valley, with an inclination exceeding 45º degrees. Denomination of Origin is Santa Cruz, within the Colchagua valley. These steep slopes are home to the superb grapes that become Montes Folly, Chile’s first ultra-premium Syrah. Yields are extremely low at less than 4 tons per hectare, with grapes and clusters that are much smaller and more concentrated than in the vineyard’s lower slopes. As a result, they deliver more colour and tannins, making Montes Folly richly coloured, complex and powerful.
Harvested by acrobats, all grapes are hand-picked and sorted on a special selection table, where every grape not up to the quality required is removed. Once in the tank, a bleeding of 20% is made to concentrate flavor, ripe tannins and colour. Fermentation is triggered and completed with wild yeasts coming from the environment, giving a true expression of terroir. It is aged 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels. There is no fining and only one very light filtration before bottling. Production is limited to a mere 9,000 bottles. Our hearts, hopes and dreams go with each bottle of Montes Folly.
