11. Ji Cheon Tae / Hexagram 11 : Tai-Peace-5.
▣ [Nine in the third line] There is no plain that does not turn into a slope,
and no departure without a return.
If one remains steadfast in adversity, there will be no fault.
Do not worry; maintain sincerity, and you will enhoy the blessing of sustenance.
[Explanation]
[Nine in the third line] There is no plain that does not lead to a slope,
and there is no departure without a return.
Even in times of hardship, if you remain upright and steadfast,
there will be no blame or fault, so do not worry; maintain your faith and trust.
You will surely enjoy the blessing of sustenance(livelihood).
[Commentary]
If there is a hill, there is flat land [
and if there is a path going out, there is a path returning
If there is an uphill, there is a downhill―such is human life.
If youfall into complacency just because a peaceful era of Tal(泰,태) has arrived,
worries will come upon you.
At times like this, do not be shaken by greed and desire,
but keep yourself firmly centered [艱貞,간정] , and you will at least break even [无咎,무구].
Therefore, do not worry; proceed with a sincere attitude [
Then, at the very least, your livelihood and sustenance will be guaranteed [
One cannot experience only good times in life.
Youth grows old, and even a prosperous era will eventually decline.
However, if one does not forget the intent to prevent disorder,
there will be no worry of letting one's family or people starve.
Just as peace and disorder alternate, all going and coming is impermanent
All conditioned things are impermanent).
Therefore, during the time of Tal(泰,태), one must not grow slack and complacent,
but should lead a life of generosity while staying mindful of dangerous times.
Eventually, when the Tal(泰,태) of the Xiantian(Former Heaven) reaches its climax,
the adverse fortune of the Houtian(Latter Heaven) arrives,
which is merely a sign that worries and anxieties are detected.
As in Confucius's commentary :
"No departure without a return [无往不復,무왕불복] means the communion of Heaveen
Earth [天地際也,천지제야]", meaning that through communication,
the positions of heaven and hell, sky and earth, man and woman, high dorn and liw born,
strength and weakness, fullness and emptiness, wealth and poverty,
as well as happiness and misfortune, are not fixed forever.
Yesterday turns into today, and today turns into tomorroe;
the world endlessly changes and rolls forward.
Those who were unfortunate will rise again, and those who have enjoyed good fortune
until now will enter a time of gradual decline.
The communion of Heaven and Earth mentioned above warns us through the principle
of the harmony of Yin and Yang, and the transition between Tal(泰,태 - Peace)
and Pi (否,비 - Stagnation).
If you ride up, you are bound to come down ;
once down, going back up is the natural law of Heaven amd Earth.
This is great lesson to engrave at the point where the 3rd line―marking the end
of Xiantian in Tal(泰,태)― moves toward the Jitack Im Hexagram (地澤臨卦,지택임괘).
Seongho (星湖,성호) and seokjae (碩齋,석재) repeatedly remind us of these cautionary
principles.
