>> YOU SHOULD BREATHE THROUGH YOUR MOUTH WHEN FINE DUST LEVELS ARE BAD.

• Some people think the acid in our stomach will neutralize the harmful dust.. and so you should breathe through your mouth. This is wrong on so many levels.
• Even if you breathe through your mouth the air is going to your lungs.. not your stomach.. Any air that goes into the stomach is burped back up.
• And by breathing through your mouth you are bypassing the nasal passages.. which acts as a filter against airborne pollution particles.
• You should avoid ventilating your room when fine dust levels are bad.
• Regularly airing our indoor spaces is important to prevent build up of certain compounds in the air.. and also to keep humidity levels in check.
• But from a fine dust perspective, it’s recommended that you close all windows when concentrations go above 60micrograms/cubic meter.
• This is because levels above 80㎍/㎥ can directly affect those with existing cardiovascular or respiratory conditions.
• And by breathing through your mouth you are bypassing the nasal passages.. which acts as a filter against airborne pollution particles.
• The best way to get clean air in the city is to permanently shut your windows.. and have an air purifier (공기청정기) running all the time.
• Even if you have a good air purifier operating around the clock that’ll remove find dust… most purifiers won’t remove other airborne toxins and unwanted gases such as radon or formaldehyde.
• An Air purifier is not the holy grail.. it’s merely an adjunct to manual ventilation.
• And if you’ve cooked something that produces smoke, for example.. fish.. then it’s very easy to surpass the outdoor ultra fine dust levels.. so you should at least temporarily open your windows.

>> AIR VISIBILITY IS THE BEST INDICATOR OF AIR QUALITY.

• The blueness of the sky is determined by the size of the particulate matter and its concentration. Smaller particles such as PM 2.5 and PM 1 will disperse sunlight more easily and cause decreased air visibility. PM 10, on the other has less of an effect.
• So it’s easy to have high levels of PM10 , or fine dust…but still have blue or blueish skies.
• The best indicator of air quality is a table of numerical values.. that shows you the various concentrations of each type of pollutant.. ozone, PM2.5 PM10, smog and so on.
