11. Ji Cheon Tae / Hexagram 11 : Tai-Peace-6.
▣ [Six in the fourth line] Fluttering lightly, not relying on wealth,
together with neighbors, without warnings, they meet in trust and sincerity
[Explanation]
[Six in the fourth line] Just as a bird lightly flutters in and flies away again,
it may temporarily help its neighbors, but ultimate wealth cannot be brought to them.
Even without admonishment or warning, the people will trust and respond in harmony.
[Commentary]
[Six in the fourth line] forms a pair with [Nine in the first line],
establishing a harmonious Yin-Yang(陰陽,음양) relationship.
It is the position within the inner and outer trigrams that most deeply enjoys
the intimate affection between clouds and rain(Un-u[ji-jeong-운우지정).
Because the strong [Nine in the third line] directly stimulates from right below,
it raises or folds its wings in excitement [翩翩,편편].
Because it cannot share the fully enjoyed wealth (joy) with neighboring line 5 or top line 6
[以其鄰,이기린], it is said to be "not wealthy [不富,불부]" ;
and even without warning those neighbors, there is trust
Confucius commented :
"Fluttering away alone without sharing wealth is because everyone among the neighbors
lost their sincerity on acciunt of oneself; and having trust without warnings is because
one desired sincerity all by oneself."
This corresponds to the case where Ji Cheon Tae(地天泰,지천태) changes at the 4th line
to become Noe Cheon Dae Jang
The overlapping trigram(互卦,호괘 - mutual hexagram)of Ji Cheon Tae(地天泰,지천태)
becomes Noe Taek Gwi Mae (惱澤歸妹,뇌택귀매),
representing a bird lightly flying up as if a maiden getting married.
The Kun (坤,곤 - ☷) trigram is not rich because substance/sincerity like a kernel has
all leaked out, whereas the Qian(乾,건 - ☰) trigram is rich because it is fully packed with sincerity.
Therefore, it does not make neighbors with the poor ; now, as Daejang(Great Power),
the 4th line becomes Yang(陽,양) with vigor.
Without fearing line 5 and top line 6, even if it goes downward, its horns will not be damaged,
and as time goes on, only good things will happen
The bottom three Yang(陽,양 - ☰) lines move upward in succession like reeds being pulled
up together, while the top three Yin(陰,음 - ☷) lines are light and swift, like birds fiying down.
[Six in the fourth line] is in its correct position, gentle and humble.
When the three Yang(陽,양) lines seek out the Yin(陰,음) lines,
line 4 descends first by itself to respond to [Nine in the first line],
leading neighbor line 5 and top line 6 so that they respond to lines 2 and 3.
The three Yin(陰,음) lines are all empty, which means 'not wealthy (不富,불부)'
and 'losing substance (失實,실실).'
Therefore, when Yang(陽,양) seeks out Yin(陰,음), it does so with a mind as humble
as a deep valley; and when Yin(陰,음) responds to Yang(陽,양),
they descend continuously without needing any warning or admonishment.
Thus, the virtues of Yin and Yang harmoniously blend,
and top and bottom interact to assist and complement each other,
embodying the unimpeded and communicative spirit of Tai(泰,태).
Hoo-yang(후앙) interpreted "Pyeon-pyeon (翩翩,편편)" as a light and rash movement,
acting like a lone warrior without cooperation;
he explained that trying to monopolize wealth while excluding neighbors leads to losing
traditional solidarity with neighboring lords(제후, Jae-hoo) resulting in lack of abundance.
On the other hand, Dong-pa(동파) explained "Bul-gye-i-bu(不戒以孚,불계이부)" as a situation
where one grows relaxed on one's own, lowers vigilance,
and acts with self-assurance amid trust, thereby not being wary of neighbors.
