When President Biden and I took office, we made a promise—to invest in the greatness of America, a greatness that has always been powered by the ambition and aspirations of its people. We understood that for our nation to thrive, every individual must have the opportunity to live a life of possibility, prosperity, and dignity.

In just over two years, our administration has made the largest investment in economic recovery since President Roosevelt. We have initiated the most extensive infrastructure investment since President Eisenhower, and we have committed to the largest climate investment in our nation's history. These monumental efforts are already yielding results across the country.

Because of these investments, we are rebuilding roads, bridges, ports, and airports nationwide. We are laying thousands of miles of fiber optic cable to connect families to high-speed internet, ensuring that every corner of our country has access to the digital tools necessary for modern life. We are removing lead pipes in our communities, ensuring that every child can drink clean water and grow up healthy and strong, free from the harmful effects of lead exposure.

Investing in infrastructure is not just about pouring concrete or laying cables; it is about investing in people. It's about ensuring that every person, no matter where they start in life, has the opportunity to thrive. And today, this bridge behind me is a testament to that commitment.

When we think about America’s bridges, icons like the Golden Gate Bridge in California or the Brooklyn Bridge in New York often come to mind. These are symbols of American ingenuity and progress. But just as important are the countless other bridges, like the one behind me. Every day, more than 100,000 people cross this bridge to go to work, visit loved ones, or simply go about their daily lives. Thousands of truck drivers rely on this bridge to deliver the food that fills our grocery stores and the products that stock our shelves.

But for decades, this bridge, like many others across the country, has gone without the repairs it desperately needs. As a result, lanes are often closed, and the shoulder is permanently shut down. Think about what that means—if your car breaks down, there is no place to pull off, and that can have serious consequences. Ambulances and fire trucks can’t respond quickly to emergencies, delivery vehicles are delayed, and commuters face longer travel times. All of this contributes to more traffic, more air pollution, and more frustration.

For years, people have talked about fixing our bridges. Well, today, I am proud to say that we are not just talking about it—we are doing it. I am announcing that we are investing nearly $300 million to repair nine critical bridges across America, including the one behind me. Specifically, this city will receive a $72 million grant to repave the road, reopen the shoulder lane, replace steel barriers, and renovate the bridge structure. These improvements will mean that one broken-down car doesn’t stop traffic for the entire city, and that more people can drive safely to their destinations every day.

This is just one part of our broader effort. Nationwide, we are investing $40 billion to repair and replace 15,000 bridges. This work represents a simple but fundamental truth: when we invest in our infrastructure, we invest in America.
