태국 야당 : 레드셔츠 수감자들의 이송 반대

The opposition Democrats are strongly opposing a move by the Corrections Department to send red shirt leader Arisman Pongruangrong and other red shirt suspects to a detention centre for political prisoners at the former Bang Khen private police school.

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday said his party was investigating who made a resolution which could result in Mr Arisman and other red shirts sent to the old Bang Khen school, which now serves as a special prison for those facing politically related charges.

Mr Abhisit said the Truth for Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was often quoted as recommending that those people who have been charged with political offences be detained separately from other inmates. He called on the commission to clarify whether it had made such recommendation or the issue could be politicised.

Earlier, Corrections Department chief Suchart Wong-ananchai said the relocation of Mr Arisman and other political suspects to the new detention facility was in line with a suggestion by the TRC, an independent panel investigating clashes between the red shirts and security forces during protests to oust the former Democrat-led administration in April and May last year.

Mr Arisman was charged with instigating an insurrection against the Abhisit government after turning himself in to the Department of Special Investigation on Wednesday. He was accused of attempting to intimidate Mr Abhisit into dissolving parliament and calling an election, of leading red shirts to lay siege to parliament and the Election Commission, and storming Chulalongkorn University.

Mr Abhisit said he would raise no objection if those who were charged with violating the emergency decree for their role in rallies were separated from other inmates. However, terrorism, assault, illegal use of war weapons and arson attacks were criminal violations, not political offences, he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Arisman's legal team will ask the Criminal Court to hold their client to the same standard as yellow shirt leaders when they seek to reapply for bail next week. Singthong Buachum, Mr Arisman's legal adviser, said the lawyers will use the case of the yellow shirt People's Alliance for Democracy to back up the bail application. He said that PAD leaders were charged with terrorism for blockading Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, but none were detained in prison.

Mr Singthong said the detention of Mr Arisman was unexpected. The legal team had anticipated he would be released after reporting to the prosecution to face charges.

The red shirt leader also faced an arrest warrant in connection with defamation lawsuits lodged by Mr Abhisit and Democrat MP Sirichoke Sopha. The Criminal Court rejected the bail request, saying Mr Arisman was a flight risk because he had been in self-imposed exile abroad for almost a year.

Mr Singthong insisted that if Mr Arisman wished to travel overseas, he would seek court permission - the same way some red shirt leaders did when they sought and were granted permission to attend a friendly soccer match in Cambodia.
