Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin has become the first Korean to officially hold a face-to-face meeting with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump since his reelection last month.
신세계그룹 정용진 회장이 지난달 재선이후 도널드 트럼프 미국대통령 당선인과 공식적으로 대면 회담을 가진 첫 번째 한국인이 되었다.
 
In an interview with Korean reporters at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday (local time), Chung revealed that he had dined with Trump at the president-elect’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where they engaged in an in-depth conversation lasting about 10 to 15 minutes.
토요일(현지시간) 하츠필드-잭슨 애틀랜타 국제공항에서 열린 한국 기자들과의 인터뷰에서 정회장은 트럼프 당선인과 플로리다에 있는 마라라고 리조트에서 식사를 하며 약 10분에서 15분 동안 심도 있는 대화를 나눴다고 밝혔다.
 
However, the head of the Korean retail conglomerate declined to disclose what he had discussed with Trump, stating that the president-elect did not mention anything specific regarding Korea.
그러나 한국의 대기업 총수는 트럼프 당선인이 한국에 대해 구체적으로 언급하지 않았다고 밝히며 트럼프와 논의한 내용을 공개하지 않았다.
 
Chung said he emphasized Korea's resilience in response to a question from reporters on Sunday at Incheon International Airport regarding whether the president-elect or his aides had shown interest in Korea's current situation.
정회장은 일요일 인천국제공항에서 열린 기자들의 질문에 대해 대통령 당선인이나 그의 측근들이 한국의 현 상황에 관심을 보였는지에 대한 질문에 대해 한국의 회복력을 강조했다고 말했다.
 
"I asked them to wait and see, reassuring them of Korea's potential," he said.
"나는 그들에게 한국의 잠재력을 안심시키며 기다려 달라고 요청했다,"라고 그는 말했다.
 
Chung also exercised caution regarding speculation about his potential role as a bridge between the Korean business community and the incoming U.S. administration, clarifying that the Korean government had not asked him to convey any messages to Trump.
정 회장은 또한 한국 경제계와 차기 미국행정부 간의 가교 역할에 대한 추측에 대해 신중을 기하며, 한국정부가 트럼프에게 메시지를 전달해 달라고 요청한 적이 없음을 분명히 했다.
 
“If the Korean government organizes a delegation (for Trump’s inauguration ceremony), I will join,” the chairman said.
"만약 한국정부가 (트럼프의 취임식을 위해) 대표단을 구성한다면, 나도 참여할 것이다,"라고 정회장이 말했다.
 
Initially scheduled to stay at Trump’s resort from Tuesday to Wednesday, Chung extended his visit through Saturday.
당초 화요일부터 수요일까지 트럼프의 리조트에 머물 예정이었던 정회장은 토요일까지 방문 일정을 연장했다.
 
His U.S. visit was scheduled months earlier at the invitation of Donald Trump Jr., the president-elect’s oldest son, who has maintained a close friendship with the Korean businessman due to their religious beliefs as Christians.
그의 미국방문은 기독교인으로서의 종교적 신념으로 인해 한국 사업가와 긴밀한 우정을 유지해 온 대통령 당선인의 장남 도널드 트럼프 주니어의 초청으로 몇 달 전에 예정되었다.
 
Trump Jr. also mentioned Chung’s name in August when he visited Seoul to attend the Build Up Korea 2024 conference hosted by young conservatives in Korea.
트럼프 주니어는 또한 8월에 한국의 젊은 보수주의자들이 주최하는 빌드업 코리아 2024 컨퍼런스에 참석하기 위해 서울을 방문했을 때 정회장의 이름을 언급했다.
 
Chung mentioned discussing various business plans, as well as religious topics, with Trump Jr. and noted that Trump Jr. had introduced him to some of his father’s aides.
정회장은 트럼프 주니어와 다양한 사업 계획과 종교적 주제에 대해 논의했으며, 트럼프 주니어가 자신을 아버지의 측근들 중 일부에게 소개했다고 언급했다.
 
Refraining from revealing the identities of the individuals he met, Chung confirmed his meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who was nominated to lead the Department of Government Efficiency under Trump's presidency.
정 회장은 만난 사람들의 신원을 공개하지 않고 트럼프 대통령 시절 정부 효율성 부서를 이끌 후보로 지명된 테슬라 CEO 엘론 머스크와의 만남을 확인했다.
 
"Musk was not interested in Korea's situation," Chung said.
정 씨는 "머스크는 한국의 상황에 관심이 없었다"고 말했다.
 
In June 2019, he was also among the Korean business tycoons who attended a meeting with Trump in Korea. The chairmen of Samsung, Hyundai Motor, SK, Lotte, Hanwha, GS, CJ and Doosan participated in the meeting as well.
2019년 6월에는 한국에서 열린 트럼프 대통령과의 회담에 참석한 한국 재계거물 중 한 명이기도 하다. 삼성, 현대 자동차, SK, 롯데, 한화, GS, CJ, 두산의 회장단도 이 회의에 참석했다.
