남아공 노스웨스트(포체스트롬)대학의 답변을 보고 생긴 궁금증 (수정: 홈페이지를 살펴봤습니다)

하도 궁금해서 제가 한 번 포체스트룸 대학 홈페이지 (http://www.nwu.ac.za/content/nwu-faculties-schools) 를 가봤습니다.

현재는 노스웨스트 대학으로 이름이 바뀌어져 있었고, 포체스트룸 캠퍼스에 신학교가 있는 걸로 나오더군요.

신학교 중 박사학위 주는 곳은 Greenwich School of Theology일 것 같습니다(확인 부탁드립니다).

1. 논문을 취소하지 않겠다는 표현을 "withdraw the thesis"라고 썼는데 보통 석사논문은 thesis, 박사논문은 dissertation으로 쓰지 않나요? 남아공에서는 박사학위도 thesis라고 쓰는지요?

-> 학교 홈페이지를 보니 박사과정 논문을 "thesis"과 "dissertation"이라고 표현했더군요.

재미있는 점은 박사학위 과정이 온라인 과정이라는 점입니다. 노스웨스트 대학으로 합병되기 전에는 온라인 과정이 아니었을 수 있겠지만요.

2. 표절 부분을 고쳐야 된다는 부분에 "Dr. Oh are required...." 이러고 써있는데요. Dr. Oh is required가 맞지 않나요? 남아공 영어는 이렇게 쓰는지 궁금하고, 그게 아니라면 명색이 대학의 공식 문서라는게 이렇게 문법조차 틀린다는게 좀 이해가 안 갑니다.

-> 학교 홈페이지를 보니 아주 아카데믹한 학교가 아닐 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들기는 했습니다. 그래도 공식문서인데...

Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen,

This message serves to inform you about the decision taken on 29 May 2013 by the Senate of the North-West University about alleged plagiarism by Dr John Jung-Hyun Oh in his thesis submitted to the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in 1998.

Over the past year the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University has received various complaints and enquiries from a number of parties about the matter. These were regarded extremely seriously. The matter was investigated extensively by a specialist committee of the Faculty of Theology, after which their report was considered by both the Extended Management Committee, and on the recommendation of the Extended Management Committee, by the Senate Committee of the said campus. Because of the seriousness of the matter and the implications for the university as a whole, it was deemed necessary that the university Senate pronounce on the matter, which prompted the discussion and decision yesterday at a Senate meeting in Mafikeng.

While it is clear to the Senate that plagiarism indeed occurs in the thesis, Senate decided not to withdraw the thesis and the 1998 award of the PhD degree to Dr Oh, because the thesis still constitutes an original and significant contribution to the discipline, even if all the sections where plagiarism was identified, are removed. Dr Oh are required to correct each and every occurrence of plagiarism in the thesis. These corrections have been stipulated by Senate and provided to Dr Oh. This must be done to the satisfaction of the Faculty and Dr Oh must submit corrected copies of the thesis to the Faculty. He will furthermore be required to address letters of apology to the surviving authors whose works have been plagiarised.

3. 다른 카페에 가보니 수정논문 제출 기한과 제출하지 않았을 경우 어떻게 하겠다는 내용이 없는게 이상하다는 의견이 있던데요. 그 점도 이상하기는 합니다. 하여튼 좀 이상한 학교인 것 같습니다.;;

문법상 애매한 표현들은 다른 뜻을 함의한다고 추측할수도 있고, 또 수정본을 스스로 제출하고 난 다음에 징계를 가한다는 등의 반전도 생각해 볼수 있지만, 자세히 여러번 읽어볼수록 선명해지는 것은, 결국 논문의 내용은 제자훈련에 기여를 했고, 논문의 형식에서 인용을 정확히 하지 않은 것이 문제이며, 이를 수정하고 원저자에게 사과함으로 문제를 해결하려는 것으로 결론을 내린듯 합니다.

온라인 박사학위라는 걸 알고나니 저런 결정을 내린게 어느 정도 이해가 되기는 했습니다.;; (물론 노스웨스트대로 합병되기 전에는 온라인 박사과정이 아니었겠지만요)

짜고 친 정황입니다.
문건 조정 과정에서 대학에서 you are required.. 해놓고 편지에서 단순히 you를 Mr. Oh로 바꾼 것 같네요.

Mr Oh에게 먼저 편지가 간 것 아닐까요?

is 와 are 를 혼돈해서 쓰는게 이상했는데.
그 상황은 이제 깔끔하게 정리됐습니다만.

일반적으로 논문 대표성을 표시하는 thesis 라고 표시한 것이네요. 공식문서라면 아닌게 아니라 그렇군요. 학교의 수준은 더 이상 왈가왈부 할 문제가 아니고요. 표절은 명백하다 그러나 독창적으로 했다가 중요하지요. 아주 세련되게 했다는 의미로 보임 ㅋ ㅋ

discipline 로 해당 학문분야로 해석되었네요.
그게 그거지만요
