During our time in Taean, we visited Heungjusa Temple (興住寺), a historic Korean Buddhist temple whose history reaches back many centuries.

The head monk warmly welcomed us and personally prepared and served tea for our group. She also shared a lively and friendly conversation with our Brazilian friends, Alexander Santos and Martinho. Although our languages and cultures are different, laughter and a warm heart need little translation.

We walked around the temple grounds together while I shared the history and stories of Heungjusa and explained some aspects of Korean Buddhist culture.

One of the most memorable sights was the temple's magnificent 1,000-year-old ginkgo tree.

Under this ancient tree, which has stood in the same place for nearly a millennium, Santos and Martinho sat quietly beside a small Buddha statue, closed their eyes, and spent a few moments in meditation.

Watching them beneath the enormous tree was especially meaningful. A tree that has lived for a thousand years needs little explanation. Simply sitting beneath it allows us to reflect on time, nature, and our own brief journey through life.

I was also touched to see our Brazilian friends make a small offering of 1,000 won, take a candle, light it, and sincerely pray for their wishes. No one asked them to do so. They seemed genuinely interested in experiencing and respecting Korean spiritual culture in their own way.

Seeing how much they enjoyed walking around the temple, meeting the head monk, drinking tea, meditating beneath the ancient ginkgo tree, and experiencing Korean culture made me happy as well.

Culture is not fully understood through explanation alone. It becomes part of us when we experience it ourselves.
And true friendship begins when we open our hearts to understand and respect one another's cultures.

Durante nossa passagem por Taean, visitamos o Templo Heungjusa (興住寺), um antigo templo budista coreano cuja história atravessa muitos séculos.

A monja responsável pelo templo nos recebeu calorosamente e preparou pessoalmente o chá para o nosso grupo. Ela também conversou de maneira alegre e descontraída com nossos amigos brasileiros, Alexander Santos e Martinho. Embora nossas línguas e culturas sejam diferentes, o sorriso e a cordialidade quase não precisam de tradução.

Caminhamos juntos pelo templo enquanto eu contava um pouco sobre a história de Heungjusa e explicava alguns aspectos da cultura budista coreana.

Um dos momentos mais marcantes foi diante da magnífica árvore ginkgo de aproximadamente mil anos existente no templo.

Sob essa árvore ancestral, que permanece naquele lugar há quase um milênio, Santos e Martinho sentaram-se tranquilamente ao lado de uma pequena imagem de Buda, fecharam os olhos e permaneceram por alguns momentos em meditação.

Foi muito significativo observá-los sob aquela enorme árvore. Diante de uma árvore que atravessou mil anos, muitas explicações se tornam desnecessárias. Apenas permanecer em silêncio sob ela já nos faz refletir sobre o tempo, a natureza e a breve jornada de nossa própria vida.

Também foi muito bonito ver nossos amigos brasileiros colocarem espontaneamente uma pequena oferta de 1.000 won, pegarem uma vela, acendê-la e fazerem seus pedidos com sinceridade. Ninguém lhes pediu que fizessem isso. Pareciam realmente interessados em vivenciar e respeitar, à sua maneira, a cultura espiritual coreana.

Ver a alegria deles ao conhecer o templo, conversar com a monja, tomar o chá preparado por ela, meditar sob o antigo ginkgo e conhecer um pouco mais da cultura coreana também me deixou muito feliz.

A cultura não é plenamente compreendida apenas por meio de explicações. Ela permanece em nosso coração quando a vivenciamos.
E a verdadeira amizade começa quando abrimos o coração para compreender e respeitar a cultura uns dos outros.

🇰🇷🇧🇷 흥주사에서 만난 한국의 마음

태안에서의 일정 중 **흥주사(興住寺)**를 찾았다.

흥주사는 백제시대의 창건설이 전해지는 오래된 사찰로, 현재의 기록으로는 고려 말인 13~14세기 무렵 창건된 것으로 추정되는 태안의 전통사찰이다.

브라질에서 온 Alexander Santos와 Martinho에게 한국의 사찰이 단순히 오래된 건축물을 구경하는 관광지가 아니라,

오랜 세월 한국인의 정신과 삶이 머물러 온 공간이라는 이야기를 들려주며 경내를 함께 둘러보았다.

특히 주지스님께서 우리 일행을 반갑게 맞아주시고 직접 손수 차를 우려내 주셨다.

브라질에서 온 두 사람에게도 격의 없이 말을 건네며 즐겁게 대화를 나누어 주셨다.

서로 언어와 문화는 달라도 웃음 속에서는 그 거리가 그리 멀게 느껴지지 않았다.

경내를 둘러보던 브라질 친구들이 작은 정성을 복전함에 넣고 초 하나를 받아 불을 밝힌 뒤 두 손을 모아 소원을 비는 모습도 인상적이었다.

누가 시켜서 하는 행동이 아니라 스스로 한국의 문화를 존중하고 그 의미를 느끼며 정성을 다하는 모습처럼 보여 더욱 보기 좋았다.

오래된 나무 아래에서는 잠시 눈을 감고 조용히 앉아보기도 했다.

수백 년의 세월을 견디어 온 나무와 작은 불상 곁에 앉아 있는 두 사람의 모습을 보니, 말로 한국의 정신문화를 설명하는 것보다 직접 그 공간에 머물며 느껴보는 것이 더 좋은 경험일 수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었다.

흥주사의 유래와 한국 불교문화에 대한 이야기도 나누고, 경내 곳곳을 함께 둘러보며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다.

문화는 설명만으로 이해되는 것이 아니라 직접 경험할 때 마음에 남는다.

그리고 서로 다른 문화를 존중하는 마음에서 진정한 교류와 우정이 시작된다.

브라질 친구들이 한국의 작은 산사에서 이렇게 즐거워하는 모습을 바라보는 것만으로도 나에게 역시 기분 좋은 하루였다.

경내에는 천년의 세월을 살아온 은행나무가 우뚝 서 있다.

브라질 친구들은 그 거대한 은행나무 아래 작은 불상 곁에 앉아 잠시 눈을 감고 명상을 했다.

천년이라는 긴 세월 동안 한자리를 지켜온 나무 아래에서 조용히 두 손을 모으고 있는 모습을 보니 무척 인상적이었다.

사람의 한 생을 훨씬 넘어 천년의 세월을 살아온 나무 앞에서는 굳이 많은 설명이 필요하지 않다. 시간과 자연, 그리고 그 속에서 살아가는 인간의 존재를 스스로 느껴보는 것만으로도 하나의 좋은 경험이 된다.

한국을 처음 경험하는 브라질 친구들이 이 천년 은행나무 아래에서 잠시 마음을 가라앉히고 그 시간을 즐기는 모습을 보니 나 역시 기분이 좋았다.
