GEORGE TOWN: A 5-month-old baby and a 4-year-old toddler are appealing for cash donations due to heart complications, which require urgent surgery.
The operation costs around RM50,000 each, one of which has been conducted today and one more is set for tomorrow.
Muhammad Hafiz Razlan, 5 month-old, suffers from ventricular septal defect (VSD), a hole between the right and left pumping chambers of the heart and atrial septal defect (ASD), abnormalities in the coronary arteries.
Due to this, Hafiz, who now weighs four kilogrammes, has frequent chest infection and poor weight gain.
Hafiz’s father, Razlan Mohd Said, 38, told reporters that his son has been suffering from various heart complications since birth.
“My son is not active and has slowed movements,” Razlan, a factory operator, said.
The child has previously gone through another operation involving the heart last October.
Meanwhile, 4-year-old Noor Alisa Syuhada Jamali suffers from Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), a congenital heart disease which causes a hole in her heart.
Noor Alisa, who weighs only nine kilogrammes, is also diagnosed with Pierre Robin syndrome, a chromosomal disorder since birth.
Her father, Jamali Saad, 35, said Noor Alisa had undergone an operation to repair the cleft palate in 2012.
“This is the first heart operation for Noor Alisa since she was born in 2010.
“We were told the estimated cost of surgery to treat the hole in her heart is around RM50,000,” he said.
Jamali, who is a fisherman, added that the family receives aid from the government hospital for Alisa’s special milk monthly which costs around RM50.
