용인외고 영어시험은 일반고와 조금 달리 다음과 같습니다.

용인외고 내신영어의 경우 1학기 중간/기말, 2학기 중간/기말 시험이 조금 다릅니다.

1학기 중간고사는 Reading Skill을 중심으로 수업을 나가면서 CNN뉴스 청취와 토플 어휘 학습 그리고 기타 프린트 수업이 주를 이루면서 “독해 중심”의 시험을 보는가 하면, 기말고사는 Reading Skill, 영문법 원서, 뉴스 그리고 프린트 등으로 수업을 구성하면서 시험에서 문법 비중이 조금 더 높아질 수 있습니다.

위의 문제 유형을 보면, 다음과 같은 두 가지 특징을 파악할 수 있습니다.

* 어휘 비중이 높습니다.

* 내용일치 문제가 많이 나오는데, 긴 지문의 내용을 읽고 영어로 답지를 고르는 문제로 “옳은 것 두 개 또는 틀린 것 두 개 고르시오“라고 묻는 유형도 주목해야 합니다.

물론 문법이 주를 이루는 시험에선 문법 문제가 많이 나오기도 하는데, 영어원서를 한 번도 보지 않은 학생들은 우선 용어에 어려움을 겪을 수 있습니다.

예를 들어

 

위 예와 같이 Dangling Modifier라는 표현을 볼 수 있는 일반고에서 분사구문의 예문에서 “다음 중 틀린 부분을 고르시오”라는 식으로 나오겠지만, 용인외고의 경우 다음과 같이 나옵니다.

* Which of the following contains misplaced modifiers? (Choose TWO)

위 예를 보면 알겠지만, dangling modifiers나 misplaced modifier의 용어를 모른다면 문제 풀이기가 불가능한 것은 아니지만(문법 지식이 어느 정도 있는 사람이라면 선택지의 문장들을 보면서 “아~ 분사구문 가지고 이야기 하는구나, 아~ 부사어구의 옳은 위치를 묻는 문제구나”하는 식으로 알 수는 있습니다), 당황할 수 있습니다.

용인외고 아이들을 지도하면, 참 명석한 아이들이라는 느낌을 많이 받습니다. 물론 영어도 참 잘하죠. 그런데 문법 용어를 많이 어려워합니다. 이 부분을 먼저 해결하면 용인외고 문법도 할 만하다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
