63) April 14th Itinerary: Salamanca - the city with the oldest university in Spain -
Today, we left early to travel southwest from Valladolid to Salamanca, then east via Avila to Segovia (8,335 km). After driving about 50 km on the highway, we stopped at a rest stop for breakfast. The ham sandwich and fresh orange juice were a delicious meal, as always. I arrived in Salamanca (8,477 km) around 11:00 AM. Parking is always a challenge in Spain, so I always had a hard time finding a spot. However, today, I found a small parking space on the street in front of the monastery, so I parked and explored the city. Founded by the ancient Romans, this city has a long history, flourishing as a transit point on the "Silver Road" during the Roman Empire. In 1218, the University of Salamanca, Spain's oldest, was founded, and it developed into one of Europe's leading university cities, along with Bologna, Italy, Paris, and Oxford. With its numerous beautiful buildings and intricate decorations, the entire city center is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ....................................................................................................................................................................................
