At the Thousand-Year-Old Buseoksa Temple

During today’s journey, we visited Buseoksa, an ancient Buddhist temple with more than a thousand years of history.

Walking slowly through the quiet temple grounds surrounded by old rocks and forest, we discovered many stories and legends that have been passed down through generations.

They were especially fascinated by the story of Master Uisang and Lady Seonmyo—the legend of Seonmyo’s love transforming into a dragon to protect Uisang, as well as the story of the “floating stone,” Buseok (浮石), from which the temple takes its name.

What made the visit especially enjoyable, however, was watching them make their wishes. 😊

At the bell, in front of the sacred rocks, and inside the Buddhist hall, each of them stopped to make a personal wish.

At first, I thought they were simply joining in for fun as part of the experience. But once they started, they became surprisingly serious and sincere. I still have no idea what they wished for so earnestly. I suppose that will remain their secret. 😄

They were also genuinely curious about traditional Korean Buddhism and temple culture. One question led to another—about Buddhist statues and paintings, prayer customs, legends, and why Korean people visit temples.

Different countries, different languages, different cultures—but curiosity, laughter, and the joy of discovering something new need no translation.

At this thousand-year-old temple, we prayed seriously, asked countless questions, shared many laughs, and enjoyed a wonderful time together.

Perhaps this is what makes travel truly meaningful—not simply seeing famous places, but experiencing another culture and discovering new stories within it.

Well, we have made enough wishes for today.
What they wished for will remain in their hearts...

No Templo Buseoksa, com mais de mil anos de história

Durante a viagem de hoje, visitamos Buseoksa, um antigo templo budista com mais de mil anos de história.

Caminhando tranquilamente pelo templo, cercado por antigas rochas, árvores e pela serenidade da natureza, fomos conhecendo histórias e lendas transmitidas ao longo de muitas gerações.

Eles ficaram especialmente interessados na história do Mestre Uisang e da jovem Seonmyo — a lenda segundo a qual o amor de Seonmyo se transformou em um dragão para proteger Uisang, assim como a história da “pedra flutuante”, Buseok (浮石), que deu nome ao templo.

Mas uma das partes mais divertidas da visita foi vê-los fazendo seus pedidos. 😊

Diante do sino, das pedras sagradas e dentro do salão budista, cada um parava para fazer o seu próprio pedido.

No começo, achei que fariam isso apenas por diversão, como parte da experiência. Mas, quando começaram, ficaram surpreendentemente sérios e concentrados. Até agora não faço ideia do que pediram com tanta sinceridade. Acho que isso continuará sendo segredo de cada um. 😄

Eles também demonstraram muito interesse pelo budismo tradicional coreano e pela cultura dos templos. Uma pergunta levava a outra: sobre as imagens e pinturas budistas, as formas de oração, as lendas e os motivos pelos quais os coreanos visitam os templos.

Países diferentes, línguas diferentes e culturas diferentes — mas a curiosidade, o riso e a alegria de descobrir algo novo não precisam de tradução.

Em um templo com mais de mil anos de história, fizemos nossos pedidos com toda a seriedade, fizemos muitas perguntas, demos boas risadas e passamos momentos muito agradáveis juntos.

Talvez essa seja uma das maiores alegrias de viajar: não apenas conhecer lugares famosos, mas vivenciar outra cultura e descobrir novas histórias dentro dela.

Bem, por hoje já fizemos pedidos suficientes.
O que cada um pediu ficará guardado em seu coração...

오늘의 여행길에서 만난 천년고찰 부석사.
오랜 세월을 품은 바위와 숲, 고요한 법당, 그리고 곳곳에 남아 있는 전설과 이야기를 따라 천천히 사찰을 둘러보았다.

특히 부석사에 전해 내려오는 의상대사와 선묘낭자의 이야기는 이들에게 무척 흥미로웠다.

선묘낭자의 사랑이 용이 되어 의상대사를 지켜주었다는 전설, 그리고 절의 이름이 된 ‘부석(浮石), 떠 있는 돌’에 얽힌 이야기를 들으며 한국의 불교문화가 단순히 종교에 머무는 것이 아니라 역사와 전설, 사람들의 삶과 함께 이어져 왔다는 것을 자연스럽게 느낄 수 있었다.

그런데 오늘 가장 재미있었던 것은 소원을 비는 모습이었다. 😊

종을 치는 곳에서도, 바위 앞에서도, 법당 안에서도 각자 자기만의 소원을 빌었다.

처음에는 여행 중 가볍게 한번 해보는 것인 줄 알았는데, 막상 시작하고 나니 두 사람 모두 표정이 너무나 진지하다. 도대체 무슨 소원을 그렇게 간절하게 빌었는지는 나도 모른다.

그것은 아마 각자의 비밀일 것이다. 😄

한국의 전통불교와 사찰문화에 대해서도 계속 질문이 이어졌다. 불상과 불화의 의미에서부터 절에서 기도하는 방법과 한국 사람들이 사찰을 찾는 이유까지, 하나를 설명하면 또 다른 질문이 이어졌다.

문화도 다르고 언어도 다르지만, 새로운 것을 궁금해하고 직접 경험하면서 서로 웃고 이야기하는 데에는 아무런 경계가 없었다.

천년의 역사를 가진 고찰에서 아주 진지하게 소원을 빌고, 또 아이들처럼 궁금해하며 질문하고 웃었던 시간.

아마 여행의 즐거움이란 유명한 장소를 보는 것만이 아니라, 서로 다른 문화를 직접 경험하고 그 안에서 새로운 이야기를 발견하는 데 있는 것 같다.

자, 이제 소원도 충분히 빌었으니…
그 소원이 무엇이었는지는
각자의 마음속에 남겨두고,

우리는 다시 다음 코스로 출발! 😄
