12.Hexagram 12 : Pi (Obstruction/ Standstill- Heaven and Earth).
▣ Six in the Second Line(六二,육이) : 包承(포승 - Embracing and submissive/Bear and endure)
― auspicious for prtty persons but for great person,
obstruction leads to ultimate success.
[Explanation]
[Six Two(六二,육이)] refers to a situation where(the ruler) embraces those who serve
and flatter him ; this brings good fortune to petty persons,
but although a great person faces obstruction and adversity,
they will ultimately achieve success.
[Commentary]
This refers to the conduct of Line 2, which alone remains gentle and upright in a world
of obstruction dominated by prtty persons.
It is a position where one might compromise with a difficult world,
turn a blind eye to corruption and private gain among petty men,
and survive by pursuing self-interest alone.
However, line 2. being central and correct,
upholds the loyalty of a noble person and endures hardship,
so it cannot act in such a way [包承,포승].
Even as all the petty men flatter Line 5 and pull strings of power to gain benefit from him
[小人吉,소인길], this is a situation completely unacceptable to a great person.
Thus, among a crowd of petty men, upholding the noble stance while honoring the intent
of King Line 5―who is strong, central, and upright ―is by no means an easy task.
Therefore, only the great person who endures through the era of obstruction can ultimately
achieve success [大人否亨,대인비형].
Confucius used Ning Wu Zi as an example and said :
"When the Way prevailed in the state, he acted wisely; when the Way did not prevail,
he acted simple/foolish.
His wisdom may be equaled, but his foolishness cannot be equaled."
Su Dongpo, who was exiled after earning the hatred of political rivals,
also noted at this juncture : "When a great person tries to save a world in obstruction,
they incur the hatred of petty men and find their path blocked.
Nevertheless, once the era of obstruction passes, what is right is bound to triumph."
lndeed. If all things ultimately return to justice, it is only when one foolishly upholds
the Great Way that justice will side with them in the future.
Confucius also annotated : "A great person achieves success through obstruction
because even when lining mixed among the crowd, they remain untainted
Thus, it seems that because Line 2 took the stance of a great person,
it served as an example for [lnitial 6] and Line 3.
One must carefully assess one's own power and situation.
This is a time when one needs to practice waiting out the time patiently.
If victiry is impossible, it is only natural to retreat and perserve oneself.
This corresponds to the case where Pi(否,비 - Obstruction) transitions
into Song (訟,송 - Conflict).
Evidence of this also appears in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty through the historical
judgment of the Sayuksin(six nartyred ministers) who confronted King Seojo
while upholding the integrity of great men.
A prime example is the death poem(絶命詩,절명시) by Seong Sam-mun included
in the Chugujip, which demonstrates his integrity and calmness in the face of death.
"The drumbeats at the execution ground hasten human life [擊鼓催人命,격고최인명],
The west wind blows, and the sun is about to set over the western mountain
They say there are no inns on the road to the underworld [
At whose housee shall I lodge tonight? [
Another inspiring scene is by Zheng Banqiao, one of the Eight Freaks of Yangzhou famous
for 'Nande Hutu (難得糊塗,난득호도 - It is difficult to be foolish)' during the Qing Dynasty,
depicting the spirit of surviving troubled times through a clump og bamboo rooted on a cliff.
"Firmly gripping the green mountain without letting go [咬定靑山不放鬆,교정청산불방송],
Its roots were originally planted right in the middle of a broken cliff
Though ground down and battered ten thousand times, it remains firm and strong
Let the fierce winds blow from all directions, east, west, south, and north
Zheng Banqiao's writings on 'Nande Hutu (難得糊塗,난득호도 - It is difficult to be foolish)'
and 'Houxiu Shibufu (홀휴시복 - Unexpected blessings/rest) are also well worth appreciating.
