A long time passed since the fall of Roman Empire,
the first of its kind in human history and much studies on it were done,
but the reply to the question of
what made Romans born under this hot Mediterranean sun
mobilize guts and spirit to conquer the world
doesn't seem to have been made.
Didn't this hot sun play its role of debilitating
the ancient Romans' spirit and weaken their guts
as is the case with their offsprings, i.e., Italians?
One of the answers, though insufficient, might be
that Roman Empire succeeded because gutsy Roman republicans
made concerted efforts to build a great nation
and its internal power pursuing material civilization,
ideal and norm of ancient times,
was stronger than its competitors around it.
However, their descendants, today's Italians
don't seem doing well like their ancestors,
taking comfort in the hot Mediterranean sun,
content with their lot of winning easy bread
with the relics their ancestors left with them.
Those who have nothing strive to have something
and those who have something stay where they are,
living on what they have.
Just he who pursues an ideal endlessly
reaches greatness.
O, ancient Romans whose faces I can see
only through marble sculpture you left behind!
All you left behind are huge and great,
apparently revealing the status you gained
after you conquered the world.
But I see in the chasms of your monuments
the drops of blood the myriads of innocent slaves shed
and hear their screams of pain still resounding in my ears.
You dreamt of building up a millenium kingdom
with huge stones your slaves carried to Rome,
enslaving the warriors you defeated at war
and exploited them to the last day of their lives.
Human greatness can be represented
neither by the huge monument you built,
nor by the glory your posterity adore you for
but only by considerate practice of love for the largest majority.
