■ Purpose of Research
The major objectives of this study are to investigate carbon sequestration and cycling including above and belowground components and to build a carbon cycling model for estimating carbon changes using GIS and CENTURY model for Pinus densiflora in Korea.
■ Contents of Research
Carbon storages and changes in aboveground and belowground components, organic layers, mineral soils, and soil respiration will be investigated in Jungbu and Nambu regions for Pinus densiflora. Also a carbon cycling model will be built using the data to be collected and soil organic carbon will be estimated using GIS and CENTURY model. This model includes climate, geographic information, environmental factors and various forest management practices. Allometric regression equations will be used to estimate biomass and net production of aboveground and belowground components. Litterfall inputs and decomposition will be measured using litter traps and litter bags, and soil organic carbon will be evaluated using periodic soil sampling with soil corers. Inputs and decomposition of coarse woody debris will be measured by decay and diameter classes. Soil respiration will be monitored using IRGA with in situ soil moisture and temperature measurements. We will analyze satellite imaginary and GIS data, and estimate indices for CENTURY model. Finally we will build a carbon distribution and cycling model for Pinus densiflora in Korea after comparing the actual data with predicted data.
