고요한 고을 깨우는 뱃바람 소리

버들가지 장단에 쇳물은 녹아내리고

오밀조밀 새겨지는 글자판 위로

미로의 숲을 지나온

부드러운 숨결이 깨어난다

​덜 익은 닥나무 붉게 물들이며

가쁘게 토해낸 장인의 숨소리

마술 같은 손놀림으로 한 올 한 올 두드려

우리네 삶을 가슴에 새긴 보석 글

​시공을 초월한 그 이름

백운화상초록불조직지심체요절

본적은 대한민국 청주 운천동이나

이국 파리 국립도서관에 몸을 뉘었다

​체구는 작아도 가장 오랜 세월을 견뎌온 몸

태어난 배의 땅을 등지고

낯선 호루라기 소리에 헐값으로 팔려 간 신세

수 천 년이 흘러도 변치 않고 꼿꼿한 절개를 지킬 텐데

외로운 타향살이에 오늘도 멍이 든다

​나는 그립다

내 고향 서원부 흥덕사

먹구름 걷히고 무심천 물길 열리는 봄날

흥덕사 부처님 미소 돋고

범종 소리 어우러져 어깨춤 추며

끌어안을 그날은

Jikji* Speaks

As the wind awakens the quiet village,

molten iron flows in rhythm with the swaying willow branches.

Upon the finely carved metal type,

a gentle breath emerges,

as though it had passed through mysterious forests.

Turning the green karinaki wood red,

the master, out of breath, releases a sigh of relief.

With magical hands,

he fashions, one by one, the precious letters

that have preserved the story of our lives within them.

A name beyond time and space—

Baegun Hwasang Chorok Buljo Jikji Simche Yojeol.

Born in Uncheon-dong, Cheongju, Korea,

she now rests in the National Library of France,

far from her homeland.

Though slight in form,

she has endured the passage of centuries.

Sold for a trifling sum at the call of an auctioneer,

she left her birthplace behind.

She will preserve her dignity for thousands of years to come,

yet she continues to endure

the sorrow of a lonely life in a foreign land.

I always long for Heungdeok Temple in Seowonbu, my hometown.

On a spring day, when dark clouds disperse

and the waters of the Musimcheon begin to flow,

I yearn for the day

when the Buddha of Heungdeok Temple smiles again,

and we may dance together

to the sound of the temple bell.

* Jikji (Baegun Hwasang Chorok Buljo Jikji Simche Yojeol) is the world's oldest extant book printed with movable metal type, published at Heungdeok Temple in Cheongju, Korea, in 1377.
