65) April 14th Itinerary: Avila - a fortress city surrounded by medieval walls

We arrived at 3:50 PM in Avila, a fortress city surrounded by medieval walls, about 40 minutes from El Bohodon (8,579 km) to (8,614 km)
The old town within the walls, built in the 11th century to protect the city from Muslim counterattacks, is reminiscent of 

a medieval city.

Avila, located about an hour and a half from Madrid and at the highest elevation of any major Spanish city, is said to experience heavy snowfall and cold winters. While much of Spain was experiencing warm spring weather when we arrived, it was quite chilly when we arrived here.

El Bohodon(8,579Km)에서 40여분 거리에 있는 중세의 성벽으로 둘러싸인 요새도시 Avila에 오후 3시 50분에 도착하였다.(8,614Km)
11세기 이슬람 교도의 반격으로부터 도시를 지키기 위해 건설된 성벽 안의 구시가지 일대는 중세도시를 연상시킨다.
아빌라는 마드리드로 부터 1시간 반 여 떨어진 지역,  스페인 주요 도시 중에는 가장 해발 고도가 높은 지역에 있어서 겨울에는 눈이 많고 춥다고 한다. 우리가 도착한 때 스페인 여러 지역은 따듯한 봄 날씨였으나 이곳에 도착해 보니 제법 쌀쌀한 날씨였다.

 
The road from El Bohodon to Avila gradually ascends into hills. The 100-kilometer radius around Madrid is a mountainous region, reaching elevations of 600-700 meters.
El Bohodon에서 Avila로 가는 길, 점점 언덕으로 간다. 마드리드 중심 반경 100여 Km는 해발 6-700m
의 고산 지역이다.

 
In the distance, a medieval walled city appears. The town is surrounded by a sturdy castle.
저멀리 중세의 성벽도시가 나타난다.마을은 견고한 성으로 둘러싸여 있다.

 
Built over nine years, starting in 1090, by Count Raymond, son-in-law of Alfonso VI, who recaptured the city from Muslims in the mid-11th century, these walls were built by Christians to protect against Muslim counterattacks. They are 12 meters high, have an average thickness of 3 meters, and have a circumference of 2,526 meters.
11세기 중반이슬람 교도에게서 도시를 되찾은 알폰소 6세의 사위 라이문드 백작이
1090년 부터 9년에 걸쳐 건설된 이 성벽은 그리스도교가 이슬람교도의 반격에 대비하여
구축한 것으로 높이 12m, 평균 두께 3m, 둘레는 2,526m에 이른다.

 
This castle wall has eight gates and 88 defensive towers, making it a sturdy castle that can thoroughly defend against enemy attacks.
이 성벽에는 8개의 문이 있으며 방어를 위한 탑도 88개나 있어서 적의 공격을 철저히 방어
할 수 있는 견고한 성으로 평가받고 있다.

 
The old town is quiet. Jeonggong is looking at a map and heading toward the cathedral.
구시가지는 조용하다. 정공이 지도를 보며 카테드랄 쪽으로 가고 있다.

 
Because it's located on the eastern side of the city walls, the cathedral feels like a part of them. Unlike other cathedrals, it has a bold and imposing atmosphere. This cathedral is a transitional style, moving from Romanesque to Gothic.
성벽의 동쪽에 성벽에 연하여 있기에 카테드랄은 성벽의 일부같이 느껴진다.
다른 카테드랄과는 달리 용맹스러운 분위기다.이 성당은 로마네스크에서 고딕 양식으로
옮겨가는 과도기 형식이다.

The most famous historical figure from Avila is Saint Teresa, who founded this monastery on the site of her birthplace.
아빌라가 낳은 가장 유명한 역사적인 인물은 성녀 테레사이다. 그녀의 생가에 이 수도원을 세웠다.

At 5:40 PM, we left for Segovia, the ancient Roman city where we would rest for the day.
