▣ Six in the Third Line[六三,육삼] : Bearing shame/Harboring humiliation.
[Explanation]
[Six Three(六三,육삼)] refers to a situation where a noble person covers
up or forgives shameful deeds.
[Commentary]
Regarding Posu(包羞,포수 - harboring shame), most interpretations except
for Dasan's take a pessimistic view.
They view Line 3―improper, uncentral, and insidious―as an opportunistic petty person
who achieves temporary success fitting for a time of stagnation.
Therefore, it is interpreted as "one who suffers the ultimate shame [包羞,포수]".
They criticize it as the plight of apetty person forced into an unavoidable role due
to being impreper and uncentral.
As if it were the epicenter of inhumans acts committed during times of obstruction
[否之匪人,비지비인], it is likened to a Japanese collaborator during the colonial period
or a communist sympathizer during the Korean War.
The world can only be described as a realm of destiny governed by the ties of time[時,시]
and position[位,위].
Had the timing and position of Line 3 not been so unfortunate,
it surely would not have suffered such humiliation.
During thr 7 years and 6 months of war between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang―the protagonists
of the decisive gamble for supremacy (乾坤一擲,건곤일척) ―the one who won most
of the battles was Xiang Yu.
However, he lacked the ability to cope with faailure.
Although Xiang Yu could have crossed the Wujiang River to plan for the future,
he chose to end his own life.
Later, Du Mu(803~852) of the Tang Dynasty expressed sorrow for him.
In times like these, one must know how to embrace humiliation and withstand
shame with fortitude.
Perhaps Posu(包羞,포수) refers to the remarkable audacity of a petty person
who remains unfazed even while bearing a guilty conscience.
A similar instance occurred when Confucius vented his outrage in the Analects :
" What? If a mere subject dares to perform the Eight-Row Dance(八佾舞(팔일무)
reserved solely for the King, he is a person capable of committing any outrage.
How appalling!"
This is the story of how Confucius pointed fingers and flew into a rage
over Jisun of the Lu State holding a dance performance at a banquet.
Furthemore, the audacity of a courtier flatteringly remarking how refreshing
it must feel upon hearing the king break wind, and Bulsujin
brushing dust off another person's beard―can also be cited as similar examples.
The decision made by a certain king/leader as if he were an ordinary man
is also clearly a case of Posu(包羞,포수 -harboring shame/humiliation).
"I owe too much to too many people.
The suffering inflicted upon many people because of me is too great.
The pain to come in the future is also beyond measure.
The remainder of my life will only be a burden to others.
Do not be too sad.
Are not life and deeath both but a single fragment of nature?
Do not feel sorry.
Blame no one.
It is fate.
Cremate my body.
And leave only a very small tombstone near the house.
This is a long-standing thought."
Confucius's annotation is as follows :
"Bear and endure all the shame.
Currently, the position is not proper/appropriate.
The lmage says : Harboring shame is due
to the improper position ]." The proof and explanation are as follows :
This crresponds to the case where the Pi Hexagram(否卦,비괘 - Obstruction)
transforms into the Tianshan Dun Hexagram(天山遯卦,천산둔괘 - Retreat/Withdrawal).
Without understanding proper translation, interpretation diverges by a vast distance.
According to the principle of waxing and waning (消長,소장),
Transitioning from Tianfeng Gou Hexagram (天風姤卦,천풍구괘) → Tianshan Dun Hexagram (天山遯卦,천산둔괘) → Tianzhi Pi Hexagram(天地否卦,천지비괘) results in petty men takinng control of the cabinet.
The reason for feeling shame about this is that the three Yang lines are isokated
and severed, failing to cannect four Yang lines as in the Tianshan Dun Hexagram
(天山遯卦,천산둔괘), causing all matters to be cut in two.
However, if the lines of the Tianzhi Pi Hexagram(天地否卦,천지비괘) ahange and revert
to the Tianshan Dun Hexagram
the petty men of Gen(艮,간 -mountain) connect with Qian (乾,건 - heaven) on the outside,
covering up and concealing their shame,
caausing the petty men to flatter the noble person on their own initiative.
This is the true nature of petty men.
Nevertheless, because the ruler of Qian embraces them from above with Xun (巽,손 -
wind/gentle compliance), it consttitutes 'Harboring/Embracing Shame(包羞,포수 -Poau).'
'Position is not proper( 位不當也(위부당야)' describes the situation of the origlnal
state before the change.
