66-1) April 14th Itinerary: Segovia (1) - An ancient city with a Roman aqueduct remaining

The Castile region is dotted with castles and ancient ruins, and although many are now ruins, exploring each one on the way to Madrid was fascinating.

I had thought of Segovia as a place famous for its guitars, but Segovia isn't named after the guitar maker. It's an ancient city with a Roman aqueduct still standing. It's located 95km northwest of Madrid and 75km east of Avila (8,614km). Leaving Avila at 5:40, the road to Segovia was scenic, with rolling hills and fields, and a peaceful rural atmosphere. Along the way, a village of about ten households huddled together appears. Despite its rural setting, the people seem happy. As we approach Segovia, the Alcazar, the model for the castle in the Disney film "Snow White," comes into view in the distance.

66-1) 4월14일 여정: Segovia(1)-로마시대의 수도교(水道橋)가 남아 있는 고도


카스티아 지방에는 곳곳에 고성과 그 옛날 유적이 남아 있어서 마드리드로 가는 도중 비록 폐허가 된 것이 많지만 한곳 한곳 둘러보는 것이 매우 흥미로왔다.
세고비아, 명품 기타의 산지로 생각이 들었으나 세고비아는 기타를 만든 사람 이름이 아니고 로마시대의 수도교가 아직도 남아 있는 고도(古都)이다. 마드리드로 부터 서북쪽으로 95km, 아빌라(8,614Km)에서 75km 동쪽으로부터 떨어져 있다. 5시 40분 아빌라를 떠나 세고비아로 가는 길은 야산과 들판의 연속으로 경치가 좋았고, 농촌 분위기가 평화로웠다. 가는 길에 10여가구가 옹기종기 모여 있는 마을이 나타난다. 시골이지만 사람들은  행복해 보인다. 세고비아에 가까이 오니 오니  디즈니 영화 <백설공주>에 나오는 성의 모델이되기도 한 '알카사르'가 멀리서 보인다. 

 
In the distance, you can see the Cathedral and Alcazar of Segovia. Located 60km northwest of Madrid, at an elevation of 1,000m at the foot of the Guadarrama Mountains, it has been inhabited by Iberians since around 700 BC and became a Roman colony in the late 1st century BC. The city was destroyed by Muslim invasions in the 11th century, but Alfonso X of Castile made it his capital.
저멀리 세고비야 대성당과 알카사르가 보인다.마드리드 북서쪽 60km 지점에 있는
과다라마산맥 기슭 해발 1,000m 지점에 있다. BC 700년 무렵부터 이베리아인이 거주
하였으며 BC 1세기 말에 로마의 식민시가 되었다. 11세기에 이슬람교도가 침입하여
도시가 파괴되었으나 카스티야왕국의 알폰소 10세는 이곳을 수도로 정하였다.

Entering Segovia by car, the Roman aqueduct greets us first.

The aqueduct was built during the reign of Emperor Trajan (98–117 AD) and served as a water supply to the highlands until 1906. Consisting of 128 two-tiered arches, it spans a total length of 813 meters and reaches a maximum height of approximately 30 meters. It is constructed of polished granite.
차를 타고 세고비야에 들어 서니 로마시대 수도교가 먼저 우리를 맞이한다.
수도교는 로마 트라야누스 황제(재위 98∼117년) 때 건설되었으며 1906년까지 고지대에
물을 공급하는 역할을 하였다. 128개의 2층 아치로 이루어져 있으며 전체길이 813m,
최고 높이 약 30m로서 다듬은 화강암을 끼워 쌓아올렸다.

After unpacking at the hotel, we head to Meson de Candido, a restaurant located under the aqueduct that
 specializes in suckling pig dishes
 호텔에 여장을 풀고 수도교 밑에 있는 애기돼지 요리를 잘하는 레스토랑 메손 데 칸디도에 가고 있다.

Founded in 1898, this restaurant (Meson de Candido) has been famous for its traditional Segovia cuisine and roast suckling pig for 110 years.

이 레스토랑 (Meson De Candido)은 1898년에 창업하여 110년간 세고비아 전통요리와
어린 돼지 통구이로 유명하다. 
 창업자의 흉상이 이 레스토랑 앞에 서 서 우리를 반긴다.

 
We had made a reservation at the hotel, but at first they refused, saying there were no seats available. However, Mrs. Candido, who was having dinner on the second floor, saw us, tourists from the Orient, and had the staff reserve us a good table on the second floor, right next to the window overlooking the aqueduct. We enjoyed a roast suckling pig and some Rioja wine.
호텔에서 자리를 예약하고 갔으나 처음에는 자리가 없다고 거절하였으나 2층에서 저녁 식사를 하고 있는 Mrs. Candido가  동양에서 온 관광객인 우리를 보고는 종업원에게 2층에서 좋은 자리를 마련하도록
하여 수도교가 바라 보이는 창문 옆에 자리를 마련하였다.
어린 통돼지 구이와 리오하 포도주를 겻들여 즐거움을 만끽하였다.

I took a photo of the cathedral at the same location the next morning. The daytime and nighttime views are quite different.
다음 날 아침 같은 장소에서 카테드랗을 찍었다.
낮과 밤의 경관이 색다른 맛이 있다.


I try to avoid group tours whenever possible. Group tours often force you to stay in hotels far from downtown, leaving you unable to enjoy the nightlife of the old town.
During my 45-day trip, I stayed at hotels located downtown, allowing me to enjoy the nightlife of each city as much as possible.
I'll try to picture what Segovia looked like the next morning. (66-2)
나는 단체 Package여행을 가급적 피한다. 단체 여행을 하면 도시 Down town에서 멀리 떨어진 호텔에 숙박하기 때문에 구시가지의 밤의 생활을 즐길 수가 없게 된다.
 45일 간의 여정에서 전부 Down Town에 있는 호텔을 이용함으로 가급적 각 도시의 밤을 즐길 수 있었다.
다음 날 아침의 세고비아의 모습을 그려보겠다.(66-2)
