I will be preaching at Gunsan Ebada Church. October 18, 2026.
Shalom!
Until now, I have only shared my messages through writing, but this coming Sunday, I will be delivering a sermon at the church service.
When God moves my heart, I can write dozens of pages of A4 paper in a single breath. Having written 1,300 pieces over the past nine years, I have produced a vast amount of writing. Most of it centers on the Scriptures—church growth, evangelism, biblical organization, church history, and a new understanding of the Book of Romans. If those same words flow as smoothly from my lips as they do from my pen, I will never have to worry about sermon topics for years to come, anywhere, anytime. Everything I have diligently written serves as material for my sermons. As I prayed about how I would perform speaking in person, God reassured me first not to worry.
Ephphatha Church and its pastors are truly special to me. I earnestly pray that the church prospers and that the Senior Pastor, her husband, and their daughter—who all serve as pastors—remain healthy and fruitful in their ministry.
There is a deep reason for my gratitude. I was in a situation where I had to move by the end of August, but as the last day of the month arrived, I still hadn't found a home. On September 1st, just one day past the deadline, the Senior Pastor remembered me during her prayers. She came to me, walked around with me, and helped me find a place. She even provided financial assistance for my moving expenses. Knowing how difficult my situation was, she deeply considered letting me stay at her church for a while or borrowing 20 million KRW—money she didn't have—to secure a home for me.
My connection with her began when my wife and I visited the church my mother-in-law attends in Gunsan to pay our respects after my brother-in-law passed away. Despite facing her own hardships, this pastor has been hosting prayer meetings for our nation and people for over ten years, providing lunch for all visitors every week, and continually helping those in need.
As I pondered what to preach, memories resurfaced of the sorrowful times when I wandered from one church to another, as well as the churches that treated me coldly and drove me away. It was not just one or two churches. I remembered those who, even after knowing I was an ordained pastor, persistently addressed me merely as "Deacon." I recalled how countless laypeople I met online—where I preached the Gospel without a physical church—looked down on me and treated me with disrespect.
I even remember an incident at a church cafeteria: after receiving a bowl of bibimbap, a female senior deacon holding the title of "General Assembly President" took my bowl just as I raised my spoon, saying, "That bowl is meant for the pastor." I suffered such humiliation. I honestly do not understand how someone with such a mindset could hold the title of General Assembly President and represent an entire congregation.
At times, I was so enraged that I wanted to beat up large-church pastors to the point of going to prison, charging forward until those around me stopped me. As a fellow pastor, there are more than a few people I truly felt like thrashing. I honestly wanted to beat them up severely. After being ordained in an independent denomination in 2011, I couldn't pay the membership fees, which caused my son to miss the opportunity to receive a pastor’s child university scholarship.
And now, a pastor who has lived as one of the poorest in Korea is preparing to preach.
As an instrument of Jesus, the Holy Spirit has always been with me, constantly encouraging me, and endlessly telling me, "I love you, take heart, you are my hope." Through His voice, I have endured and overcome 40 difficult years. Yet, the very churches that claim to serve and worship the Jesus I believe in treated me not even as a regular believer, but as a poor beggar coming into their doors, showing nothing but contempt.
I believe that when I stand before them as a preacher to deliver God's Word, they will truly tremble in fear, worried that I might bring up their ugly past. Yet, for people who have lived this way, standing before Jesus at the Final Judgment will be tens of thousands of times more terrifying than standing before my sermon today. That is why we must live faithfully in the present so that we have nothing to fear at that moment. Hallelujah!!
What was done to me was done to Jesus.
On the other hand, there were also those who showed true Christlike love. There was a pastor who, despite his own hardships, gave me his heart surgery funds instead of getting the procedure himself. There is a senior deaconess who takes care of my meals and daily life as if I were her own family. And there are those like Pastor Esther Kang of Ephphatha Church who have warmly welcomed me.
What I desire most for this sermon is for Jesus—who has accompanied and encouraged me throughout these 40 years—to be present during the service. I desire for the Holy Spirit to come as a gift to everyone listening to the Word. This is my greatest prayer.
How eloquent can my own preaching really be? How could I ever persuade people with mere human words or touch their hearts through my own ability? Even if my speech is slow or clumsy, if God comes, He will not only accept our worship but also hear my prayers for the congregation and the church. If He heals their burdens tomorrow and fills them with the Holy Spirit, that would be the greatest blessing.
I pray that such grace unfolds tomorrow at the 11:00 AM Sunday service at Ephphatha Church. I kindly ask the 500,000 readers across 120 countries who read my writings to pray as well. A miracle will surely happen. And since this is a gathering of two or three in Jesus' name, the Lord will undoubtedly be there. If you are nearby, please come, experience the miracle, and find solutions to your problems.
Having trained His servant for 40 years, as He now sets me upon the pulpit to preach, I believe that Jesus will come, the Holy Spirit will abide with us, guide me, and receive our worship. I pray that this service will truly honor God the Father in heaven, and I am praying over the Word through which we will share His grace. Out of all the churches in the world, I have been called by Ephphatha Church in Gunsan, and I eagerly anticipate what wonderful things lie ahead.
If you are at home and live nearby, please come. You are not coming to see me; rather, come to encounter and worship Jesus, who receives our worship. Come with the expectation of the amazing things God will do—miracles will surely take place
Prayer:
God of love!
I have been called to preach tomorrow at Ephphatha Church. I deeply desire to worship You faithfully, bear witness to the precious blood of our Lord, and convey the indwelling presence and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Just as You guided my hands and eyes to write smoothly and swiftly, I pray that You govern my heart and lips tomorrow. Let Your name be glorified, and grant that all who listen may be comforted and renewed with new strength.
In Jesus' holy name I pray, Amen.
