12.Hexagram 12 : Pi (Obstruction/ Standstill- Heaven and Earth).
▣ Nine in the fourth place[九四,구사] preserves the (heavenly) mandate intact,
so there is no fault.
(Since the fortune of the times is stagnant/obstructed) living by tilling a small garden
(with a plow) is a blessing.
[Explanation]
[Nine in the Fourth Line/Nine Four(九四,구사)] preserves the (heavenly) mandate intact,
so there is no fault.
(Since the fortune of the times is stagnant/obstructed) living by tilling a small
garden (with a plow) is a blessing.
[Commentary]
Line 4 is a noble person seated in strong and firm position of Heaven.
in an era of obstruction, a noble person's duty is to refrain from maintaining relationships
even with [lnitial 6 ,(初六,초육)], with whom there is no meaningful connection.
One must also avoid getting entangled with Line 3, which is uncentral and improper.
That is precisely how one preserves the Mandate of Heaven.
Politically speaking, it represents a position where a powerful figure close to the sovereign
receives a calling from the king to soothe and persuade petty men;
however, this is already a time of obstruction where political power has tipped.
Even so, the Way of the noble person still remains alive in Line 4.
Yet, it is moment when the energy of obstruction is encroaching even upon Line 4.
In times like these, it is necessary to lead the king's misrule toward rovolution/transformation.
Therefore, 'Having a Mandate (有命,유명 -Yumyeong) means finding way to preserve
the heavenly mandate so that no fault arises [无咎,무구 - Mugu].
Likewise, Line 4 must facce the era of obstruction directly and refrain from making
deals with any petty men.
In particular, one must not be blinded by wealth or lust so as to guard the heavenly mmandate
and cultivatee bright blessings.
Currently, it is an era of obstruction.
Realize that the heavenly mandate implies retirement and carries the profound meaning
of living in seclusion.
In the final passage of the Analects, Confucius gives a stern warning :
"If one becomes a noble person yet does not know the Mandate of Heaven,
does not understand words, and ;acks decency and shame,
how can they be called a noble person ?"
Therefore, since [Nine 4] is overly strong and uncentral,
there might naturally be fault in its actions,
but as it reaches the turning point where obstruction ends and perce arrives
even the groups of Yin align with its will, ensuring that it will surely share in blesssings.
In the Shuoyuan(Greder of Stories), the law of rise anf fall is states :
"Those who did not take responsibility for their mistakes perished suddenly,
while those who know how to take responsibility for their mistakes rose up prosperously."
Confucius also annotated : " Having a mandate annd incurring no fault is because one properly
carries out the sovereign's will
On the other hand, interpreting Zhu (疇,주) as same-kind/peers(疇類,주류), comrades (同志동지), or companions (朋類,붕류), it is also translated as "the group will share in blessings together
Moreover, Zhu (疇,주) is a character that appears only in the Pi Hexagram(否卦,비괘)
within the I Ching ; it is said to refer to the Hongfan Jiuzhu(Great Plan in Nine Divisions)―
a political canon spanning grom King Yu to King Zhou― meaning that governing the people
well during turbulent times brings blessings.
Dasan viewed Zhu (疇,주) as a plow for tilling fields, stating :
"In cultivating/governing the field, one encounters blessings".
The field represents the mind, as well as the nation.
Furthermore, looking at it as expanding field ridges,
Sumyeong (壽命,수명) means "cultivation a field of blessings".
The following is the opening section of Mumyeongja's 'On Fate(論命,논명 -Nonmyeong) :
"Confucius rarely spoke about the Mandate of Heaven(天命,천명).
Regarding gain [得,득] , and loss[不得,불득], He said it depends on destiny/fate [有命,유명].
Seeing this, one can roughly understand the intent of the sage.
Mencius stated : 'It is human nature for the mouth to desire fine taste,
the eyes to desire beautiful colors, the ears to desire pleasant sounds,
the noseto desire fragrant scents, and the limbs to desire comfort.
However, attaining these depends on fate/destiny.
Therefore, a noble person does not refer to these as essential nature(性,성)'.
Also, 'There is a proper way to seek, but attaining it depends on fate.
Seeking does not guarantee attaining, because one is seeking things that lie outside oneself'.
What does this statement mean?
That which acts without deliiberate action is Heaven,
and thaat which arrives without being summoned is Fate(命,명).
Since every person receives an allotment from Heaven at birth,
there is no one who does not possess a fate.
It is merely that humans fail to realize it ; from life and death [
longevity and early death [壽殀,수요], wealth and poverty [貧富,빈부], nobility and meanness
[貴賤,귀천], down to every instance of connection and obstruction,
smoothness and adversity―everything is governed by Fate(命,명).
In the world, it is referred to as Su(數,수 -number/destiny), and fortune(運數,운수 - Unsu)
is indeed Fate (命,명 - Myeong).
As human beings, who among us is unaware that Fate (命,명) and Destiny(數,수) exist?
However becoming blinded by personal gain and reason, people remain oblivious
to the uselessness of their pursuits and falsely recognize them as inherent human nature.
Thus, believing that "affairs under heaven can be sought through wisdom and managed
through effort," they leave no frantic action untried.
Only upon reaching the ultimate end do they finally exclaim,
"It is the Mandate of Heaven(天命,천명) !"
How could they be so foolish?
Only sages and worthy individuals know this and remain at peace,
naturally attaining contentment wherever they go.
This is precisely why the Zeshui Kun Hexagram (澤水困卦,택수곤괘) speaks of "fulfilling
destiny to achieve purpose," and why the Pi Hexagram(否卦,비괘) enjoys blessings
by entrusting itself to fate
The Classic of History (Shujing, 서경) states that the Heavenly Mandate does not err ;
those who are thoroughly versed in fate comprehend this,
whereas those who act dangerously and seek lucky windfalls do not.
This is why Confucius asserted that one who does not know Fate cannot become
a noble person.
Even regarding a virtuous figure like Zigong,
Confucius believed he had failer to accept Fate because he accumulated personal wealth.
For this reason, Mencius remarked regarding "that which impels one to go [行使,행사]"
and "that which holds one back [止尼,지니]" that these are not within human control,
but are the Heavenly Mandate―so how much more so for things greater than these?
The discussion continues as follows :
"Yet, did not Mencius say, 'The noble person practices the law and awaits fate
And did he not also say, 'Whether dying young or living long,
remaining steadfast without doubt, cultivating oneself, and awaiting fate is the way
to establish one's destiny
He did not merely say 'await fate,' but explicitly added 'practice the law';
nor did he merely say 'remain without doubt,' but explicitly added 'cultivate oneself.'
From this, it can be conclusively person can only await fate after knowing destiny,
acting upon what ought to be acted upon, and cultivating what ought to be cultivated."
Han Changli [韓昌黎,한창려,(韓愈,한유 - Han Yu)] stated :
"That which originates from oneself is brought about by oneself,
while that which does not originate from oneself is the Heavenly Mandate(天命,천명)
However, if one merely relies on Heavenly Mandate without cultivating one's conduct,
then even being crushed to death under a high wall or dying in prison after committing
a crime could all be blamed on Heavenly Mandate(天命,천명).
Therefore, while nothing is not destined by Heavenly Mandate(天命,천명),
one must submissively accept what is proper and right
where 'proper(正,정)' refers to Correct Fate/Mandate(正命,정명 - Jeongmyeong).
If a person can fulfill what ought to be done, then good fortune, bad fortune, blessings,
and calamities are all Correct fate (正命,정명 - Jeongmyeong) ;
this is precisely what is meant in the Doctrine of the Mean by 'abiding in ease and
awaiting fate' [居易以俟命,거역이사명].
