그리고 나강석의 옆얼굴을 봤다.

"주저 말고 말해요. 뭐든지. 다 들어주겠습니다."

박윤주는 차마 입을 열기 어려운 듯 다시 달리는 차 앞을 바라보았다. 그리고 마침내 입을 열었다.

"저어~ 도착하면 잠잘 곳을 예약할 거잖아요?"

"예. 적당한 호텔이나 모텔을"

말을 마친 나강석이 조금 속력을 줄이며 얼른 고개를 조금 돌려 박윤주를 보고는 다시 얼굴을 바로 하여 전방을 주시하였다.

"방은 둘로 할 거예요? 아니면 원룸에 침대 2개로 할 거예요?"

나강석은 지체하지 않고 말했다.

"저는 원룸에 퀸 싸이즈 원 베드로 할 건데요? 돈도 절약되고 가장 중요한 것은 옆에 있어야 안심하고 잠을 잘 수 있습니다."

"고마워요. 나강석 씨."

지체 없이 나오는 조용한 말에 나강석은 빨리 박윤주의 얼굴을 보고 다시 돌렸다. 박윤주가 다시 나강석의 얼굴을 보며 말했다.

"고마워요. 여보~ 저는 따로 방을 사용하면 어쩌나 걱정했어요."

"그렇게는 안 하지요. 그러나 원룸이라도 대부분 2베드가 있습니다. 이제 걱정 뚝 하십시오."

"이그~ 좋았다 말았네요. 나강석을 안고 자려 했는데 ㅎㅎㅎ."

"그건 됐고, 점심으로 뭘 먹고 싶은 것 있습니까?"

"아무거나 시켜도 돼요?"

"예. 뭐든지. 고래고기라면 잡아서 만들어 줄 것입니다."

"ㅎㅎㅎ 벌써 배가 불러요. 고마워요. 그런데 실은, 스테이크도 생굴도 새우도 먹고 깊은데요."

"생굴과 새우는 피이아이나 핼리팩스, 노바스코샤에서 싱싱한 굴 먹도록 하고, 오늘 스테이크는 됩니다. 나이가 들수록 육류를 가끔 섭취하여 근육이 빠져나가는 것을 막아야 합니다. 그런 의미에서 Keg에서 스테이크 먹도록 합시다. 오케이?"

"I got it. When? Where?"

"First in Kingstone and next is Ottawa. You got it?"

"It's perfect plan. I agree all. ㅎㅎㅎ 재미있어요. 그래서 묻고 싶은 것 많아요."

"갈 길이 많으니까 천천히 물어보십시오. 어이쿠. 저어기 Keg restaurant이 보입니다."

"네. 좋아요. 바다도 보이는데요."

"그런 좋은 자리를 받아야 할 텐데..."

그들은 잠시 후 로렌스 강이 보이는 언덕 위에 있는 Keg Restaurant 안의 박윤주가 원하던 강이 보이는 자리에 앉았다.

"전망이 참 좋아요. 저기 요트들이 물살 가르며 강을 거슬러 올라가는 곳도 엄청난 양의 흐르는 강물도 느껴져요. 저는 이런 곳에 처음 와봐요. 고마워요. 여보~"

그렇게 말하는 박윤주의 눈에 눈물이 고였다.

"여보. 이 스테이크 참 부드러워요. 먹기 좋아요."

"예. 그래서 Keg가 유명하답니다. 저도 20년 전에 먹어보고는 처음입니다. 체하지 않게 천천히 드십시오. 제가 식사하면서 스케줄을 알려 주겠습니다."

"예. 같이 드시면서 말해주세요."

그들은 부드럽게 잘 익은 스테이크와 반 온스 씩 먹고 포테이토 메시도 그린 빈도 함께 먹었다. 그리고 커피를 주문했다. 워낙 이웃 싸이드 뷰가 좋아서였다. 커피가 오자 나강석이 한 모금 마신 후 창밖을 바라보고 있는 박윤주의 옆얼굴을 보았다. 젊었을 때는 훨씬 더 예쁜 모습이었을 것이다.

"커피 즐기십시오. 저는 말하겠습니다."

그녀가 고개를 돌려 끄덕이고 주목하였다.

"매일 운전은 가능한 한 아침 10시 전후로 시작하여 저녁 7시 전에 마치는 것으로 할 것입니다. 그리고 가능한 한 매일 아침저녁 스트레칭을 할 것입니다. 다음 스케줄은 Ottawa입니다. 그리고 그다음 날은 몬츄어리얼을 거쳐 퀘벡으로 가서 1박 합니다. 곳곳에서 장시간 걷는 것은 하지 않을 것입니다. 그다음 스케줄은 그때 또 말씀드리겠습니다. 이상, 하실 말 있습니까?"

"ㅎㅎㅎ 다 좋아요. 가면서 오면서 계속 이렇게 상세하게 설명해 주실 것이죠. 근데요~"

그녀가 말을 마치고 아직 까만 눈동자의 눈을 크게 뜨고 바라보았다.

"예. 그렇게 할 것입니다. 말씀하시지요."

"군대 장교 출신이에요? 영화에서 본 것 같이 확실하게 체계적으로 작전하듯 말해서요."

"장교는 아니고 대한민국 육군 병장 출신입니다. 제대로 군 생활을 했습니다."

"어머나~ 나강석 씨. 말에 힘이 펄펄 넘쳐나는 것 같아요. 씩씩해요."

"그렇게 보여도 74입니다. 매사 조심할 때지요. 뭐든 조금 일찍 하여 서둘지 말자는 생각입니다. 바쁘면 다치거나 사고가 생겨요. 제 경험칙상."

"그건 맞는 것 같아요. 그런데, 나강석씨. 아니다. 여보~ 고향이 어디세요. 저는 강원도 삼척 아래 호산이에요."

"예. 기억합니다. 가다가 말하려고 했는데... 저는 경북의 제일 북쪽인 죽변입니다. 예전에는 강원도 제일 남쪽이었지요."

"어마나. 죽변! 저도 알아요. 울진 가는 길에 잠깐 들러는 그 바닷가 촌. 그곳에서 자랐어요? 어떡해 이런 운명이..."

"예. 그곳에서 나고 자랐지만, 사연이 많지요."

"예. 차차 말해주세요. 궁금해요. 그래도 큰 출세하셨네요. 저는 시골 호산에서 태어났지만, 아버님이 초등학교 선생님이고 고향이 경기도 가평이라서 제가 초등학교 4학년 때 가평으로 옮겼어요. 그래서 많은 것들을 기억하지 못해요."

"아~ 그렇군요. 고향이 같은 바다라서 바다 이야기하자면 끝이 없을 것 같군요. 자. 이제 출발합시다."

"잠깐만, 이제부터는 말을 그렇게 하지 마시고 동생이니 그렇게 말을 놓으세요. 저는 오빠로 당신 여보로 계속 부를게요. 네. 그렇게 해주세요."

And then I saw Na Kang-seok's side profile.

"Don't hesitate and tell me anything. I'll listen to it all."

Park Yoon-ju looked back at the moving car as if she couldn't bring herself to open her mouth. And then finally she opened her mouth.

"Can I order anything?"

"Yes. Anything. If it's whale meat, I'll catch it and make it for you."

"Hahaha, I'm already full. Thank you. But actually, I'm full after eating steak, raw oysters, and shrimp."

After a while, they sat down at the seat that Park Yoon-joo wanted, inside Keg Restaurant, which is on a hill overlooking the Lawrence River.

"Honey. This steak is really tender. It's good to eat."

"Yes. That's why Keg is famous. This is my first time eating it since I had it 20 years ago. Eat slowly so that you don't get sick. I'll tell you the schedule while I'm eating."

"Yes. Please tell me while you eat."

They ate a half-ounce of tender, well-cooked steak and potato chips with green beans. Then they ordered coffee. It was because the view from the neighboring side was so nice. When the coffee arrived, Na Kang-seok took a sip and looked at Park Yoon-joo’s profile looking out the window. She must have been much prettier when she was younger.

She turned her head and nodded, paying attention.

“I’ll start driving every day around 10 a.m. and finish before 7 p.m. if possible. And I’ll stretch every morning and evening if possible. Next schedule is Ottawa.
