아브라함의 믿음은 어디로 갔는가. 야곱이 꾸었던 꿈은 어떻게 되었는가.

다윗이 약속 받았던 계약은 어떻게 되었는가. 솔로몬에게 내렸던 지혜는 어디 갔는가. 이스라엘도 유다도 하느님의 왕국을 완성하지 못하고 끝나버리는 건가.

이사야(제2이사야)는 끝이 뵈지 않는 역사의 어두컴컴한 동굴에서 묻고 또 물었을 것이다. 도대체 어떻게 살았길래 하느님의 백성이 포로로 잡혀가고 이 나라 저 나라를 떠돌아다니게 되었는가.

이사야는 또한 스스로에게 물어 보았을 것이다. 하느님이 답해 주셔야 한다고 졸라댔을 것이다. 그 답은 의외로 간단하고 명쾌하였다. 하늘의 지혜를 따라야 할, 영향력 있는 지도층 사람들은 저마다 '자기' 안에 갇혀 우상과 물신을 따라 살았고, 이들이 벌이는 농간에 어리석은 백성들이 놀아났기 때문이다.

개인의 꿈과 야심을 공동체의 유지와 안녕보다 앞세우면서 유다 공동체는 무너져 내렸다. 사물을 똑바로 바라보고 깨어있어야 할 보통 사람들이 사악한 무리들에게 속아 넘어가버리면서 저들은 끝이 뵈지 않는 유랑의 길을 나서야 했다.

이를 수습하는 건 이사야 같은 '깨어있는 자'의 몫이었다.

유다 공동체의 새로운 역사가 시작될 것임을 알렸다. 아무리 절망적이라 해도 깨어있으면 역사를 새로이 써 내려갈 수 있다.

하느님의 뜻과 계획과 자비가 하느님만을 바라고 사는 이들 안에 고스란히 살아있다.   I confirm‎ the words of my servant,
carry out the plan my messengers announce.
I say to Jerusalem, Be inhabited!
To the cities of Judah, Be rebuilt!
I will raise up their ruins.                                                                           [Isaiah 44:26, NAB]                                                                         ----------------                                                                       Where did Abraham's faith go? What happened to the dream Jacob had? What happened to the covenant that David was promised? Where did the wisdom given to Solomon go? Will neither Israel nor Judah end without completing God’s kingdom? Isaiah (Second Isaiah) must have asked again and again in the dark cave of history with no end in sight. How on earth did God's people live that they were taken captive and wandered from country to country? Isaiah may also have asked himself: He must have begged God to answer. The answer was surprisingly simple and clear. This is because influential leaders who were supposed to follow heaven's wisdom were locked within themselves and lived according to idols and material gods, and the foolish people were fooled by their tricks. The Jewish community collapsed as individual dreams and ambitions took precedence over the maintenance and well-being of the community. Ordinary people who were supposed to look at things straight and stay awake were deceived by evil people and had to embark on a journey of wandering with no end in sight. It was the responsibility of an ‘awake person’ like Isaiah to sort this out. It was announced that a new history of the Jewish community would begin. No matter how hopeless it is, if we stay awake, we can rewrite history. God's will, plan, and mercy are alive and well in those who live in hope only for God.
