[미술여행=윤경옥 기자]빛과 색채의 조화를 탐구하는 멀티디미디어 아티스트 나비킴(Navi Kim, 김현정)이 오는 2025년 3월 5일부터 23일까지 뉴욕 컬리지 포인트(College Point)의 Gala Art Center에서 개인전을 개최한다.

빛과 색채의 조화를 탐구하는 멀티디미디어 아티스트 나비킴(Navi Kim, 김현정)이 오는 2025년 3월 5일부터 23일까지 뉴욕 컬리지 포인트(College Point)의 Gala Art Center에서 개인전을 개최한다.

이번 전시는 회화를 기반으로 한 디지털 아트와 영상 작업을 포함한 총 20점의 작품을 선보이며, 빛의 나비를 모티프로 한 융합적 작업의 정수를 담아낼 예정이다.

Gala Art Center는 동시대 미술의 순수한 예술성과 실험성을 강조하는 전시 공간으로, 현대 미술의 다양한 시도와 철학적 깊이를 조망하는 기획전들을 지속적으로 개최해 오고 있다.

Jamie Jang 관장은 이번 전시에 대해 "나비킴 작가의 작품은 빛과 색채를 통한 철학적 탐구를 기반으로 하여 현대 미술에서 감각적 경험과 지적 사유를 연결하는 중요한 시각적 언어를 제시한다.

이러한 점에서 본 센터의 전시 취지와 부합해 이번 개인전을 초대하게 되었다"고 밝혔다.

나비킴의 작업은 빛과 색채를 매개로 인간의 내면과 외부 세계를 연결하는 시각적 언어를 구축해 왔으며, 이번 전시는 그동안의 탐구를 집약적으로 선보이는 중요한 기회가 될 것이다.

뉴욕에서 펼쳐질 이 전시는 빛과 색채의 조화 속에서 관객들에게 깊은 사유와 감각적 경험을 선사할 것이다

나비킴 작가는 올해로 나비 모티프 작업 20년을 맞이하며, 뉴욕 개인전에 이어 5월에는 한국교원대학교 박물관에서 개인 초대전을 개최할 예정이다. 또한, 6월에는 화랑아트페어, 9월에는 KIAF에 조선화랑 소속 작가로 참여하며, 국제 미술 시장에서도 활발한 활동을 이어갈 계획이다.

나비킴 작가는 올해로 나비 모티프 작업 20년을 맞이하며, 뉴욕 개인전에 이어 5월에는 한국교원대학교 박물관에서 개인 초대전을 개최할 예정이다.

●인터스텔라, 너와 내 안의 빛

나비킴은 빛의 본질을 나비라는 형상 속에서 발견하였다. 이때 나비는 빛 자체이면서 빛을 드러내는 매개로서 작용한다.

나비는 빛의 근원에 도달하고 빛을 감지할 수 있게 하는 모티프이다.

‘숨’을 뜻하는 ‘프쉬케(psyche)’의 본래적 동의어인 나비는 인간의 영혼, 혼의 부활을 상징하는 이미지이기도 하지만, 그의 화면 위에서 점멸하는 나비 형상은 단순한 나비의 재현이 아니라 빛과 색의 혼합체로서 “빛나는 색”을 상징적으로 표상하고 있는 것이다.

작가는 특히 토마스 아퀴나스가 미의 요소로 강조한 ‘클라리타스(claritas)’의 감각적인 밝음의 빛 개념이 어떻게 명료한 진리의 빛으로 연결될 수 있는지를 탐구하고, 결국 최고의 감각기관인 시각과 정신적 명료함의 인식작용을 융합시키는 궁극의 빛 개념을 작품으로 형상화해 왔다.

<인터스텔라> 연작은 아크릴 안료로 그려진 화면 위에 플렉시글라스와 인공의 빛으로 빛나는 나비 형상을 올려놓음으로써 빛과 색의 상관관계, 빛과 색의 융합을 시도하는 형식적 전환을 시도했다.

동양화의 겹과 중첩의 미학, 수행도로서의 의미 있는 행위성으로 비롯된 시간의 흔적들이 그의 화면 속에서 조용히 빛나고 있다.

<내 안의 빛> 연작에서 보여지는 수많은 붓질 속에 가려진 내부의 광채는 마음의 결정인양 혼의 불꽃인양 언뜻언뜻 자신의 감춰진 존재적 진실을 드러내면서 화면에 맑은 정신적 깊이와 질감을 부여한다.

작가는 보는 것과 아는 것, 빛과 색, 몸과 정신, 안과 밖, 있음과 없음의 극점에서 만나면서 살아나는 근원적 영감의 빛을 추구하고 있다. 회화의 영성, 구원성을 믿는 그는 회화적 공간이라는 변화와 생성의 장을 기반으로 각종 미디어를 수용하면서 물리적 빛과 이성적 로고스의 형식적이고 내용적인 통일, 감각을 통한 사유의 확장이라는 회화의 리얼리티에 대한 근본적인 물음을 지속적으로 던지고 있는 것이다. 너와 내 안의 빛이 만나는 인터스텔라의 순간을 나비킴은 프로포즈한다. -이건수 미술비평·전시기획

●Interstellar, The Light Within You and Me

<“The greatest joy occurs when a luminous object encounters the radiant essence within us.” –Thomas Aquinas>

Nabi Kim has discovered the essence of light within the form of a butterfly. In this context, the butterfly functions both as light itself and as a medium that reveals light. It serves as a motif that reaches the source of light and enables its perception. The butterfly, originally a synonymous term for psyche, meaning “breath,” symbolizes the human soul and the resurrection of the spirit. However, in her paintings, the flickering butterfly figures are not mere representations of butterflies but rather symbolic manifestations of "radiant color" as a fusion of light and hue.

The artist particularly explores how the concept of claritas—the sensory brightness emphasized by Thomas Aquinas as an essential element of beauty—connects to the light of clear truth. Ultimately, she has sought to materialize the ultimate concept of light in her works by integrating the highest sensory organ, vision, with the cognitive process of intellectual clarity.

The Interstellar series attempts a formal transformation by placing luminous butterfly figures, created with Plexiglas and artificial light, over a painted surface of acrylic pigments. This process investigates the correlation and fusion of light and color. The layered and overlapping aesthetics of East Asian painting, along with the traces of time that emerge from its meditative and performative brushwork, quietly illuminate her canvases.

In the The Light Within Me series, the concealed inner radiance beneath countless brushstrokes intermittently reveals its hidden existential truth, resembling a crystallization of the mind or a flickering flame of the soul. This imparts a sense of pure spiritual depth and texture to the canvas.

By merging the act of seeing with knowing, light with color, body with spirit, interior with exterior, and presence with absence, the artist seeks the luminous inspiration at the core of existence. Believing in the spirituality and redemptive nature of painting, she embraces various media within the transformative and generative realm of pictorial space. Through this, she persistently raises fundamental questions about the reality of painting—questions concerning the formal and conceptual unity of physical light and rational logos, as well as the expansion of thought through sensory perception.

●눈물꽃에서 피어난 힐링 나비

멀티디미디어 아티스트 나비킴(Navi Kim, 김현정)

‘빛의 나비’를 모티프로 20년째 동행해 왔습니다.

저에게 나비는 현실을 극복하고 싶은, 삶에 대한 열망이자 한 줄기 빛과 같은 희망의 상징입니다.

그래서 나비를 빛나는 색으로 표현하고자 했습니다.

Navikim이라는 작가명은 내 안의 빛을 찾아 항해하는 'Navigator(항해자)', 히브리어의 'Navi(선지자)'라는 뜻을 담고 있습니다.

그 희망의 빛은 멀리 있는 것이 아니라 바로 내 안에 있음을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

저의 작품 세계에서 추구하는 빛은 내 안의 빛나는 자아를 발현하게 하는 사랑입니다. ‘삶 그리고 예술의 주인공은 바로 스스로 빛나는 당신이기에...’

나비작가 김현정 (金顯靜, Navikim)은 공간의 스토리를 담아 회화, 사진, 영상, 설치를 융합하는 멀티미디어 아티스트다. 상명대학교 미술학과를 졸업하고, 동 대학원에서 석사 졸업한 뒤 조형예술⦁디자인학과 박사 수료했다.

나비킴은 개인전 30회와 기획 초대전, 단체전 130여회에 참여했다.

A Healing Butterfly Blooming from Tears

I have been accompanied by the motif of the “Butterfly of Light” for 20 years.

To me, the butterfly symbolizes a yearning for life, a desire to overcome reality,

and a beacon of hope like a single ray of light. That’s why I express butterflies in radiant colors.

The name Navi Kim carries the meaning of “Navigator,” sailing in search of the light within, and “Navi,” meaning prophet in Hebrew.

I have come to realize that the light of hope is not far away, but resides within me.

The light I pursue in my art is love- the kind that illuminates the radiant self within. “Because the protagonist of life and art is you, who shine from within…”
