피스의 구조 별 특징

베플과 리드의 간격에 따라

1. 하이 배플(hight baffle) : 배플이 리드쪽으로 가깝게 내려 않은 배플, 챔버 사이즈가 작게 되므로 날카롭고, 밝고 톡톡 튀는 음색, 반응속도 빠르며 내쉬는 저항감은 적어 로우 배플에 비해 불기가 수월하게 느껴짐. 하지만 삑사리가 잘 나고 컨트롤이 어려움 ex) 듀코프 메탈, 반도렌 점보 자바, 비츨러 ARB 등

2. 로우 배플(low-) : 챔버가 깊게 파인 형태, 소리가 크고 음색은 어둡고 부드러운 느낌, 저항감이 느껴지고 보다 힘이 든다. ex) 셀라 하드러버, 반도렌 옵티멈, V5클래식 등

3. 미디엄 배플(mediums-) : 로우와 하이의 중간, ex) 메이어 하드러버

베플의 모양

o 스트레이트 베플(straight baffle) : 구멍 구조 일직선

주로 번들 피스(색소폰 구입 시 딸려온 피스), 모든 음역대에서 매우 고른 사운드, 예쁘고 무난한 소리, 고음에서 튀지 않아 소프라노 마우스 피스에서 많이 이용, 숨이 강한 연주자들에게 적합, 연습용, 따라서 색소폰 앙상블,군악대,마칭밴드,교회음악등 색소폰 파트가 튀지 않아야 할 음악에는 이 형태의 피스가 많이 쓰입니다. 신품 악기를 구입하면 100% 이 종류의 피스가 들어 있습니다. ex) 셀마 C*

o 콘케이브 베플(concave baffle) : 롤-오버 배플과는 반대로 팁 쪽에 움폭하게 파인 드믄 형태의 배플,

매우 어둡고 둔한 음색, 저음- 멍청한 소리, 고음- 소리내기가 쉽지 않다.

o 스텝 베플(step baffle) : 한 스텝 꺽인 형태

보다 밝고 응축되며 쏘는 듯한 소리(압력 증가) ex) 듀코프의 메탈피스, 데이브과데라의 마이클브레커 모델, 반도렌의 점보 자바,

o 롤 오브 베플(roll-over baffle) : 팁 쪽에서 약간 볼록하게 나왔다가 꺽이는 형태, 앞 부분 이 말려서 들어감, 짧은 하이 배플, 로우 배플과 같은 풍부한 소리를 가지면서도 한편으론 날카롭고 그르렁대는 소리를 낼 수 있어 재즈 연주자들이 선호, 육안으로는 스트레이트와 롤-오버를 구별하기가 쉽지는 않다. ex) 오토링크, 카이네틱(슈퍼톤), 쇼생크

2.색소폰을  접하고  제일  많이, 손쉽게  바꾸게  되는 겄이 마우스 피스이다.

특히  누구 누구가  무슨  피스를  쓰더라 ,, 그리고  그  앨범을 들으면 금새 자기도 이 피스만 사면 꼭같은 소리를 내리라 생각하고 덜컥 저지릅니다.

(물론 중고시장에 내다 팔면 90% 이상은 건지니까...)  

적어도 어떤 피스든지 설계자는 (특히 현대의 피스) 뚜렸한 컨셉과 음색의 특징을 지향하고 피스 제작에 들어가고 수없는 실험과 수정을 거쳐 양산에 이르릅니다. 옛날 (50~80년대 전까지)에는 90% 이상의 프로 연주자들이 국산피스를 사용했습니다. 악기도 물론 90% 이상이 국산이었고  서울의 한남동의 한남테너, 세마포(Semapo), 안성의 안성테너(유기가 유명한곳이라 어느 누군가가 결국 놋쇠에 관련된...)

마산의 아리랑테너 (알토는 서울의 세마포가 유일하게 만든 겄으로 기억됨)

등이며 놋쇠 주물로 피스를 부어 대충깍고 니켈도금후 (물론 이닿는곳에 프라스틱은 없습니다)

한번 불고나면 놋쇠와 직접  맞닿은 거라 담배가 아주 설탕맛이 납니다 (실험해보세요..)  이 국산 피스를 가지고도 대니보이며 뭐 별거 다 불었습니다.. 

간혹 시멘트에다가 갈아서 부는 분도 있었는데 이게 아마 리페이싱의 시초? 

이즈음의 외제 피스는 (한국에 들어온겄) 오토링크와 버거라센 그리고 간혹 보이는 정체불명의 일제피스 정도 였는데  일당이 500원이 안될때 버거라센 피스는 중고로 3만원 정도 했습니다. 

오토링크가 일본에서 5만엥 정도 했는데 그때는 몰랐지만 그게 모두다 플로리다 오토링크라는거... 

버거라센은 주로 105-2 SMS 가 인기 였는데 버거라센의 모델도 덕빌 (오리주둥이 처럼생긴거) 스쿱빌 (스포츠카 앞부분처럼 유선형)                             패트바디 (몸둥이가 뚱뚱한거= 이게 제일 비쌉니다 요즘..) 뒤의 숫자는 0 = 챔바의 모양이 스텐다드로 어떤 음으로 치우치지 않고 만든 것 M= ㅡ

Medium chamber 로 중간크기의 챔버 (약간  쏘는소리)    SMS= 부드럽고 깊은 소리를 냄. 

 이외에도 Bullet chambe,(총알챔버),  Bronze body등이 있는데 브론즈는 제법 비싼 피스였습니다.  

한동안  쏘는 소리좋고 소리큰 현대 피스에 밀려 찬밥신세를 못면해 인기가 없었는데 요즘에는 20~30 만원이 넘게 거래된다는 ... 

피스는 크게 메탈, 러버, 그리고 드믈게 wood, 크리스탈(합성수지)있는데

알토는 주로 러버, ( Hard lubber)  테너는 메탈이 주종인데 미국에서도 한국처럼 유행이 있어 조수아 레드먼이 슬랜트 시그너츄어 오토링크를 쓰니까 덩달아 미국에서 품절이 되고  한국에서도 같이 비싸 졌습니다. 

저는 2년전에 99%의 오토링크 슬랜트 시그너춰를 이베이에서 $750 에 한국사람 딜러에게서 샀는데 색나라에서 78만원에 판적이 있는데  쪽? 팔려서 밤 12시에 올렸는데도 단 5분만에 팔려 놀란적이 있습니다.. (지금은 120정도에 거래 되더군요.) 

우리가  잘 아는 과데라는 미국 뉴욕연주자들의 주문에 데이브 과데라가 독일산 순도 높은 황동 막대를 가져와서 손으로 만들어 인기를 끌었는데 (흔히 말하는 과데라 핸드메이드) 주문이 밀리자 레이져로 깍아 팔고 제법 장사가 잘되었는지 색소폰 제작에 까지 뛰어 들었다가 지금은 만들지 않고 있습니다. 

과데라는  수제품말고 레이져컷 제품으로는

등이 있는데 일반적으로 오프닝이 8*급 이 되어 (미국 프로 연주자 평균오프닝, 특히 고 마이클 브랙커는 아주 장신인데 이사람의 오프닝에 맟춘 피스를 한국사람이 쓰는걸 보고 놀랐습니다.) 저도 한국 평균은 넘는데 과데라는 저한테 벅차다는 느낌을 받았습니다. 

그러나 대편성의 합주, 락앤롤, 색소폰과 전기기타등과의 합주등에서는 살아남는 피스가 제일 으뜸이 과데라요 그다음이 듀코프, 야나기사와 죠디 DV, 브릴하트  메탈 버거라센  오토링크 순입니다. 

셀마사의 신형악기들이 점점 쏘는 소리로 변해 가는것도 전기를 사용하는 악기와의 합주에 염두를 두어서 그런게 아닌가 하는 생각을 가져 봅니다. 

한번은 라이브(아주 시끄럽게 음악을 하는크럽)에 식스와 액션2를 가지고 갔는데 식스의 소리가 묻히는 반면 액션2는 쫙 뻗어나가서 놀란 적도 있습니다. 

액션1, 2나 마크식스를 보면 식스보다 고음 레미화의 톤홀이 엄청크게 설계되어 있는겄을 볼 수 있습니다. 

듀코프는 미국의 공학박사 (혹은 치과의사 라고도 함) 듀코프박사가 자신의 취향에 맞는 피스를 제작하고자 설계해 그때 당시의 피스들 보다 (Dowm Beat 란 미국 재즈메가진에 실린 선전문구) 150% more power 라는 선전 문구를 업고 1970년 말에 등장했는데 한국에는 D 형 챔버가 주로 수입되었지만 제가 본겄만도 L, G, H,들도 있습니다. 흔히들 듀코프는 납이 들어 있다고 하지만 그 주원료는 주석입니다. 몹시 무른 금속이어서 떨어뜨리면 (특히 주등이 부터 수직으로 떨어지면) 못쓰게 되는 경우도 많고 좌우 대칭도 잘 않맞는 피스도 많아서 고음에서의 컨트롤이 조금 까다롭습니다. 

전에 한번 D9 짜리를 잘아는 의사산생님 (외과의사이며 색소폰 연주자..덩치가 아주 좋은분..) 이 공구로 챔버를 깍아 본적이 있는데 그 힘들던 D9가 아주 부들부들하게 소리도 잘나고 콘트롤 하기 편하게 변해버린 적이 있는데 혹시 그피스 누가 갖고 계시면 연락주세요..(행방불명됨..) 

메탈피스는 다시 하이비플과 로우배플 형으로 나뉘어 지는데 배플이란 챔버에서 생성된소리를 다시한번 증폭 시켜주는데 그 경사나 크기,각도에 따라 음색이 변합니다.

팁과 리드에서 가까운부분이 급격하게 깍여져 있으면 쏘는 소리가 나며 보륨이 크나 반대로 푸근한 맛은 없습니다. 

하이배플로 대표적인건 과데라  듀코프나 비츨러 브릴하트 등이며

로우배플로는 대표선수가  오토링크 종류이며 그중간의 버거라센 혹은 양쪽의 특성을 교묘히 이용한 조디DV가 있으며 야나기사와도 같은과에 속합니다. 

하이배플 피스도 챔버의 천정 (윗부분 꺽이는 곳에 네모난 플라스틱이나 나무를  조그맣게 잘라서 붙여 놓으면 아주 소리가 부드러워 지는걸 느낄수 있습니다.(옛날엔 서브톤이 질 나라고 붙여서 많이 사용햇슴) 

러버는 고무와 주석을 섞은 재질이라고 도 하고 나무를 잘게갈아 접착제로 (고무가 많이 섞인) 응고시켜 (마치 전기기구의 기판재질?) 만든 겄인데 뉴욕메이어의 달콤하고 어두운 소리와  꼭 같이 생긴 요즘의 메이어 가 소리가 다른 이유를 지금도 찿고 있습니다. 

얼마전만  해도 $400~500 이면 살 수 있던 뉴욕메이어가 $1000 가까이 로 올라버려 이제는 바꾸지도 못하고 뒤 꽁무니가 터진놈을 $200에 사서 애지 중지 쓰고 있습니다. 

뉴욕메이어 부로스 같은건 $1500 이상 나갑니다. 

러버의 또하나 명품은 셀마사의 솔리스트인데 테이블(리드붙이는곳)에 금박으로 Solist 라고 쓰인것는 1960년전의 것으로 비싸고 (특히 소프라노가 최고..) 꼭같이 솔리스트처럼 생겨도 금박 글씨가 없는건 1970년이후에 나온것인데 값은 조금 떨어지나 소리는 별 차이가 없습니다. 

솔리스트 피스는 피스를 뒤에서 들여다 보면 챔버가 다른것은 둥글게 깍여 잇는데 이겄은 말발굽 형으로 (U자) 깍여 있어 일반적인 보다 조금더 싸아 하는 소리가 납니다 (이규의 하이미들이 조금 들어간소리?) 

결론을 말하면 비싼데는 다 이유가 있고 그 값을 하겠지만 피스를 사서 6개월 정도는 불어 보아야 그 참소리를 알수 있습니다.  

자기의 취향과 귀에 맞고, 고음좋고, 저음좋고, 부드럽다가, 강하고,게다가 불기에도 편한 피스는 세상에 없으며 (차라리 머리좋고, 인물 이쁘고, 돈많고,  밤에 죽이고? 말 잘듣고,  나이 나보다 20살 어린 여자를 찿는게 빠를지도..) 

빨리 피스의 특성을 깨닫고 거기에 맞춰 나가는게 최곱니다.

물론 형편이 되면 비싼것으로 사시고... 그러나  녹음시 이큐를 조금만 만져줘도 피스를 바꾸는 것보다 더 음색이 변합니다. 

피스가 한 광주리 있으신분들  빨리 내다 팔고 자기가 제일 손이 많이 가는 놈 하나만 남기시고  계속해서 그겄만 불어보세요..  비로소 머리좋고, 인물좋고,  돈많은 여자가 멀리 있지 않았다는 걸 알게 됩니다.(안영일)

No gain No pain.. 연습이나 합시다.. 고통없이는 얻는게 없습니다..

3. Selmer Saxophone Mouthpieces

H 셀마

아래의 것들은 1920대에 제작된 초기의 셀마 피스이며 H selmer Made in france라고 쓰여져 있고  테이블에는 둥근 금박의 로고가 있다 (오발) 이것들은 매우 넓은 챔버를 가지고 있다.

These were the first of the Selmer mouthpieces produced in the early 1920s. They had the name "H. Selmer Made in France" inside an oval on the back of the mouthpiece. They had a very large chamber.

이시대의  셀마 레가쳐와 캡은 역시 H selmer가 얇은 놋쇠에 찍혀 있다.

대개 금이나 은도금이다.

The Selmer ligatures and caps at this time also had H. Selmer written on them. They were stamped from a very thick brass. Most were silver and gold plated.

2) 에어 플로어.

첫번째 에어 플로어 모델은 생크부분에 쇠로된 링이 씌여져 있고 대단히 넓은 챔버를 가지고 있다. 이겄들은 클래식연주자 들에게 많이 쓰이기도 했지만 때로는 너무 어둡다는 의견들이 있기도.. 초기모델은 쇠로된 둥근 로고가 등부분에 있기도 했지만 곧 셀마는 간단한 쇠링과

등부분의 각인 글씨로 바뀐다.

The first Air Flow mouthpieces had a metal ring around the shank, a very big chamber, and small tip openings. These are popular among classical players but are often considered too 'dark' by others. The very first version had a fancy banded shank and a metal logo on the back. This on ly lasted a year or two though. Selmer soon switched to a simple metal band and scribed writing on the back.

1920년대 말 셀마 마우스피 스 에는 SSS 가 등부분에 쓰이는데 이것은 셀마 수퍼 색스라는 뜻이며 악기의 가격과 피스는 1921년부터 올려졌다. (신문등에..)

1920년 후반에 이모델들은 메탈밴드들을 없애고 스콜(꼬은 실과같은 문양)이 생크부분에

적용된다. 이것들은 여전히 넓은 챔버를 가지고 잇으며 첫해의 모델들은 시리얼넘버들을

몸통옆에 , 페이싱을 테이블에 표시하고 있다.

In the late 1920s these models lost the metal band and moved to a scroll work band around the shank. The floor became a little higher. They still maintained a very large chamber. The first year of production mouthpieces had a serial number on the side. These all had the tip opening marked on the table. For example: table C.

The metal version of this mouthpiece had deep fluted sides and a medium round chamber. These were the first metal mouthpiece Selmer made which started in the late 40's. They all had the facing stamped on the table.

메탈버젼의 이들 모델들은 몸통옆에 깊게파이고 중간크기의 둥근 챔버를 가진다.

이들은 셀머의 첫번째 메탈모델이며 1940 년까지 만들어 졌다

At this time the all the rubber mouthpieces chambers became small round chambers as well. The first of these had the name AIR FLOW stamped on the table. Later AIR FLOW was removed and the tip opening was placed on the table in an oval. All of these had a scroll-work shank similar to the later Soloist models, however, the very end of the shank was shorter, or stubbier. These are very good mouthpieces and the alto model is in particular demand by classical musicians.

이때의 모든 셀머피스는 작은 둥근형태의 챔버를 가지기 시작한다.

첫번째 모델은 AIR FLOW 각인이 테이블에 있으며 나중의 AIR FLOW는

테이블의 타원형에 오프닝이 고쳐져 새겨진다.

모든모델들은 스콜무뉘가 (솔리스트 모델비슷하게) 있고, 어쨋든 생크 끝부분은 매우 짧다.

이들 모델들은 매우좋은 피스이며 특히 알토가 좋다.

The metal version of this mouthpiece looked very similar internally to the rubber version. While not as pronounced, it also maintained the fluted exterior of its previous metal model. This metal mouthpiece was called the Classic model. The Jazz model was also introduced at this time. It had a horse-shoe shaped chamber with a high floor. These mouthpieces were brighter than the Classic model and did not have a scroll-work shank. They had Jazz written on the table, though. All the metal mouthpieces were on ly made in facings: C, C*, D and E. Below is the Classic model.

Here is a Selmer mouthpieces add from 1955 showing the AIRFLOW models. This was just a year prior to the famous Short Shank Soloist models released in 1956. All the rubber mouthpieces had the small round chamber at this time.

In 1956 Selmer came out with a budget line of rubber mouthpieces called the Selmer ELKHART, and a student line of plastic mouthpieces very similar in sound and style to the Brilhart Ebolin and Tonalin mouthpieces called the Goldentone. The CLARION line of crystal clarinet and tenor saxophone mouthpieces was also released.

During this time, Selmer made some rare mouthpieces for Stentor . These had a taper finished shank, the tip opening in an oval on the table and a small round (actually almost oval) chamber, and are very good playing mouthpieces.

3) Short Shank Soloist

These are the classic Selmer mouthpiece of the 1950s. They had a short, almost stubby, shank and the name Soloist engraved on the table. The first of these had an almost oval chamber, much like the Brilhart Ebolin and Tonalin Great Neck NY mouthpieces. There was a small flat at the back of the floor (front of the chamber) in their molds. This flat was enlarged by hand to make it more oval. Later, the hand work to oval this section was not done. Finally the chamber became truly horse-shoe (or dome) shaped.

The later horse shoe shaped chamber mouthpieces are what is commonly referred to as the Selmer Short Shank mouthpieces. The two previous versions of this chamber were on ly made for a few years. All of these mouthpieces are enjoyed by the Jazz and Classical players alike. Please see below for pictures of these three chamber shapes.

From this point on all mouthpieces with the smaller round chamber are called Larry Teal models, and are distinguished by an LT on the table.

The Selmer "Soloist" short shank hard rubber models came in sizes from B* to H. For reference an "E" is equivalent to an Otto Link 5, and an H is equivalent to an Otto Link 7*. The Selmer mouthpieces from B* to E all came with a medium length lay (the distance from the tip of the mouthpiece to the point where the reed meets the facing). The larger sizes F, G, and H on ly came with a SHORT length lay. Hence all the larger tip openings had a shorter lay than the smaller tip openings. This was an attempt to make them easier to play. However, the bottom end of the horn suffered tremendously because of this.

이들 클래식 셀마 마우스피스는 1950년에 만들어 졌다.
이들은 짧은 생크를가지고 soloist 이름이 테이블에 쓰여져 있다.첫번째 모델들은 거의 타원형의 챔버를 가진다  거의 부릴하트의 에볼린,그리고 토날린의 그래이트넥과 흡사하다. 작은 평평한 플래이트를 챔버앞에 가지며 이 플래이트에는 손으로 새긴 좀더 타원형의 무뉘가 새겨졌다.  이 오발 은 손으로 새겨지지 않았으며 마지막으로 챔버는 말발굽의 형태를 가진다. 후기의 말발굽형태는 숏생크마우스피스에 공통적인 영향을 미치는데 두가지의 챔버는 불과 몇 년간에 걸쳐서 만들어 졌다.
모든 이들피스는 재즈나 클래식에 즐겨 사용되었다 사진의 말발굽형태의 챔버를 보시기 바랍니다. 이시점 부터 모든 셀머의 피스는 적은 둥근형태의 챔버를 가지는데 레리 틸 모델이라 부른다.  

셀마 솔리스트 숏생크 모델은 사이즈가 B 부터 H 까지가 있다, 보통의 E 는 오토링크의 5호와 같다. 그리고 H는 오토링크의 7*와 비슷하다.
셀마피스는 B부터 E 까지 중간정도의 레이 (팁으로부터 테이블의 리드가 만나는 지점까지의 거리)  큰 사이즈의 F,G는 그리고 H는 짧은 레이를 가진다. 이유는 좀더 편한 플래이를 위해서다. 어쨋든 악기의 맨저음에서 충분한 경험을 이들로 인해 할수 있다.

The Jazz model remained the same basic design; however the shank of the mouthpiece got a band like look to it.

Selmer issued several different ligatures in the 1950s. The adjustable slide-on ligature fit everything from a clarinet to a tenor saxophone mouthpiece. The screw-down ligature was released in 1958. It had a very thick reed-plate giving it a dark sound. Their standard band ligature had very fat screws at first. Over time the screws got thinner..

The first caps just had the Selmer name on them. They also had and a pointing tip. Later, MADE IN FRANCE was added along with their famous logo. The tip of the cap was also flattened. In the 1960's the lacquer got lighter.

4) Long Shank Soloist

These mouthpieces were identical to the later short shank models, though with a longer shank. The C* model was included with all the French (Paris) Selmer Mark VI saxophones made in the 1960s. Like their Short Shank brothers, they were made in sizes from a B* (smallest) to an H (largest) which is equivalent to an Otto Link 7* tip opening.

The Long Shank Larry Teal model looked identical on the outside to the Long Shank Soloist but had a round chamber and LT stamped on the table.

5) Long Shank - Soloist Style

These mouthpieces look identical to the long shank Soloists, but did not have Soloist engraved on the table. The tip opening was also stamped on the back. They still had the horse-shoe shaped chamber.

They had less roll-over baffle than their Soloist brothers though, so were darker sounding.

The Soloist Style mouthpieces were produced primarily in the 1970s. Because they look like the Soloist mouthpieces, but are not marked Soloist, they are called Soloist Style.

The metal mouthpieces had an elongated shank and the tip opening stamped on the back, just like their rubber counterparts. The long shank Selmer Classic metal mouthpiece has not changed to present.

6) S80 Mouthpieces

These mouthpieces were produced in the 1980s to present. They have a bit higher floor giving them more projection and have a square chamber.

The metal mouthpieces have remained pretty much the same from the 1980s to present. The Jazz model's shank became more streamlined looking.

7) S90 Mouthpieces

These mouthpieces were produced in the 1990s to present. They are identical to the S80 mouthpieces except with a slightly larger square chamber.

4. 오토링크 피스

요즘에는 여러가지의 피스들이 저마다의 음색을 자랑하며 쏟아지다 시피 하지만 가장 많이 사용되고 또 비싸기도 한 피스가 오토링크입니다. 1940년대 부터 생산된 오토링크는 40년대의 뉴욕링크

50년대부터의 플로리다 오토링크 가 있으며 아직도 꾸준히 생산되고 있습니다.  

빈티지의 경우는 수요가 폭발해 그 값이 천정부지로 뛰어 작년만해도 이베이에서 $6~700  에 구입할 수 있었던 프로리다 오토링크의 경우 최근에는 엄청 올랐으며 귀한 모델인 3band (생크에 줄이 3개..오토링크는 생크의 줄로서 그 생산년도와  값이 정해지는데

일반적인 2밴드, 1밴드, 그리고 생크에 USA가 잇느냐  없느냐에 따라서도 값이 딜라집니다.) 

빈티지 플로리다를 구별하는 방법은 첫째 홋수표시가 어디에  잇느냐는 것인데 플로리다의 경우 바디,즉 몸통 옆구리에 홋수 표시가 되어 있습니다.  그다음이 레가쳐인데 요즘의 래가쳐가 위아래 표시를 화살표로 새겨놓고 조임나시의 크기도 좀 더 큰 반면에 빈티지는 레가쳐에 표시가 없으며 조임새 나사가 요즘것보다 적습니다.

그리고 T 라고 새겨져 잇는겄도 있습니다. 

그다음이 만드는 공법인데 요즘의 것들이 주물로 제작되는 반면에

빈티지는 단조(즉 쇠를 두드려서 넓게 만들어 은땜으로 이어서 붙여서 만든겄입니다) 

오래된 오토링크의  테이블 부분을 보면 정중앙에 가는 흰색갈의

라인이 보이는데 이게 바로 단조후 은땜으로 영접한 것입니다. 

금속의 밀도에 있어서도 주물 보다는 훨씬 치밀 하다고 생각됩니다. 처음 오토링크를 쓰는 분들은  그 음색이 평범하고 볼륨도 적은듯 하여 별로 좋아하지 않으나 일단 피스에 익숙해지면 크고 부드러운 소리, 맹꽁이가 우는듯한 파워있는 소리를 낼 수 있습니다. 

특히 녹음에는 오토링크가 탁월한 성능을 발휘 합니다. 그냥 듣는 소리와 녹음시의 오토링크는 (풀로리다 링크) 많은 차이가 나서 쉽게 오토링크를 버리지 못하는 이유가 됩니다.

 가요,재즈,에서 확실한 장르를 보여주며 리드도 별로 가리지 않습니다. 1950년 근방에 생산된 USA가 없는 모델들은 USA가 있는 모델보다 훨씬 강한 소리를 내는데 그 재료가 이리듐이라고 말하는

미국인도 보았습니다 만  좌우간 쇠의 색이 흰색갈이라 신빙성이 있는겄 같습니다. (이리듐은 만년필 촉의 끝부분에 사용되는 강한 금속 입니다) 

하드러버의 경우 오토링크 글씨가 45도 각도로 삐딱하게 쓰여진 슬랜트 시그너쳐는 값이 무지 비쌉니다(120이상..) 

그밖에도 같은 시기에 샹산된 레죠챔버는 그소리가 아주 부드러워 이런 음색을 좋아하는 분들이 많이 찿습니다만 값은 슬랜트 시그너쳐만큼 비싸지는 않은듯 합니다. 

로우배플의 표준 모델인 오토링크가 이렇게 값이 뛸줄 알았으면 엤날에 개당 중고가 3만원도 안 할적에 한 100개만 모아 두었으면 ..하는 우스운 생각도 해 봅니다만 그때 마크식스도 중고가 30만원 안밖이 었으니... 

사람이 어찌 미래를 알 겠습니까? 현대의 오토링크와 빈티지 오토링크는 너무도 다른 소리를 내고 있어 신기 하기도 합니다.. 

형만한 아우 없다는 엤말이 생각 나네요..

5. Meyer Saxophone Mouthpieces

Meyer "True Flex" Fascing
These were the first real Meyer Brothers mouthpieces and were made in New York. These have a cut out on the table with the phrase, 'Meyer "True Flex" Facing' in it. The cut-out was to allow the reed to vibrate more freely. This concept does not work well though as the ligature pushes down on the malleable reed right above this cut-out, deforming the reed. The wet reed bottom also expands into the table and further deforms the reed bottom, not allowing it to lay flat.

1) 메이어 트루 프렉스 페이싱.

이들은 진짜 메이어 형제의 첫번째 작품이며 뉴욕에서 만들어 졌다.

이들은 테이블을 파내고 메이어 트루프랙스 페이싱 이라고 문구를 새겨 넣었다.

파낸 테이블은 리드의 진동을 좀더 자유롭게 하기위해서다

이컨셉은 레가쳐의 눌림에서 리드의 변형이나 억제를 피하기 위해서다

젖은 리드의 바닥은 테이블의 바닥에서 늘어나고 플레이트에 붙지않기 때문이다.

These did not have a chamber size marking, but had a slightly larger chamber than the later Meyer Brothers mouthpieces. Hence they also had a little less projection and punch. MeYer was written lengthwise on the back of these mouthpieces. A very rare version of this mouthpiece is a clear plastic version that is otherwise identical to the other "True Flex" models.

이들은 챔버 사이즈를 써놓지 않았다 그러나 나중의 메이어 부로스보다 약간더 챔버를 가진다,

역시 약간 더큰 펀치력과 뻗는맛을 가지며  메이어는 피스의 등뒤에 사이즈를 쓰기도 했다.

아주 드믈게 투명의 프라스틱 버젼이 잇는데 어쨋든 트루프랙스 모델이다.   

Vintage Meyer Metal Mouthpiece:

Ike Quebec played on e of these on his Buescher Aristocrat tenor. My guess is it is an old Otto Link, Master Link blank with nicely fluted outer-walls. It is a very nicely finished mouthpiece that came in brass and solid silver with a slide on ligature. They even had a clarinet version that is very unique in that it has rounded inner-side walls and a round chamber just like their saxophone mouthpieces.

내생각엔 이것은 오래된 마스타링크 오토링크의 외관과 비슷하고 매우 훌륭한 마감으로 되어지며 은이나 놋쇠의 레가쳐가 스라이딩 방식으로 따라 왔다.

그들은 아직도 크라니넷에서 테너의 내부같이 둥근 챔버를 가진 피스를 만들고 있다 .  

Meyer Brothers New York:

The most sought after of the Meyer mouthpieces is the Meyer Bros. New York model. These had a fat body and came in a small, medium, and large chamber. The small chambers were very bright, and the large chambers were very dark. Hence most people played on the medium chambers. The large or small chambers are still very good playing mouthpieces though. The finish work on these was excellent. They had very rounded inner side walls and a small roll over baffle at the tip. The Meyer Brothers mouthpieces are also known for having a very good quality hard rubber compound that produces a very rich sound.

가장 많이 찻는 피스는 메이어 부로스  뉴욕모델이다.

이들은 통통한 몸둥이에 스몰,메데움,라지 챔버를 가진다.

스몰챔버는 매우 밝은 음색을 라지챔버는 어두운 음색을, 그러나 대다수의 연주자는

미디움챔버를 선호한다. 스몰과 라지챔버는 아직도 매우 훌륭한 피스로 통용되며

이들의 마감또한 뛰어나다. 이들은 매우둥근 내부벽을 가지며 약간의 롤오버 배플을

팁에 가지고 있다.

메이어부로스 피스는 아는바와 같이 매우 좋은양질의 경화고무 가루로 만들어져

매우 부티?나는 사운드를 낸다.     

Though officially the Meyer Bros. mouthpieces came in three chamber sizes, really there were four.  공식적으로 알려진 메이어 부로스. 피스들은 3가지 사이즈의 챔버가 있다,
사실은 4개지만..

The fourth is another small chamber model. Both were marked as small chambers but on e is much smaller than the other. The below top two photos show the two small chamber models. The top-left version has a very high floor and the back of the chamber forms a circle smaller than the bore. The top-right small chamber mouthpiece also has a high floor but the back of the chamber actually extends out to the same diameter as the bore.
4번째 챔버는 또다른 스몰챔버의 모델. 둘다 스몰챔버라 쓰여 있지만 하나는 다른 스몰팸버보다
월등히 적다. 사진에 보이는 두개의 모델들, 맨위 왼쪽것은 매우 높은 입구와 뒤를 (다른옆의 피스보다 ) 가지며 확실히 같은 직경과 크기의 피스보다 넓고 크다.
The back of the chamber on both the medium and large chamber mouthpieces are the same size as the bore, the difference is in the height of the floor and the width between the two side walls inside the mouthpiece. Here the large chamber is significantly larger than the medium chamber. It is interesting though that the larger of the two small chambers, the medium chamber and the large chamber do look and play very similar.
챔버의 뒤 두 미디움 챔버의 피스는 같은크기의 보어를 가지나 다른점은 전면의 높이와
두사이즈사이의 챰버내부벽의 높이이다. 여기의 라지 챰버는   메디움챔버와 크게 다른 것을 보여준다.
 흥미있는겄은  라지챔버와 스몰챔버의 차이는  연주에 있어서나 겉 보기에도 거의 흡사하다. 
By far the most popular model for alto is the medium chamber as it has the most traditional sound; however, all models play very well. The tenors are not nearly as popular as the altos; however, particularly the small and large chamber versions of the tenor mouthpieces are very special and unique playing mouthpieces. Both are quite rare though.
가장 널리 쓰이는것은 알토의 미디움 챔버 이며 이겄은 가장 전통적인 사운드를 가진다. 어쨋든 모든 모델들은 매우 소리가 좋으며 테너는 알토에 베해
대중적이지를 못하다 . 어쨋든 특히 스몰,그리고 라지 챔버의 테너 마우스피스는 매우 뛰어나고 독특한 사운드의 피스이다.
The Meyer Bros. mouthpieces came in two vintages. The early version had the chamber size marked on the shank UNDER the table and included the word 'chamber'. For example it would say, "MEDIUM CHAMBER.' The later version had the chamber size marked on the shank under the 'Meyer Bros' logo on the back of the mouthpiece. It on ly said, 'SMALL,' 'MEDIUM,' and 'LARGE.' It also had a slightly longer shank, though the entire length of the mouthpiece stayed the same.

나중의버젼은 챔버의 홋수가 생크아랬부분 "메이어 부로스 "글씨의 아래분에 있다. 그냥 스몰,라지,등이며  이겄들은 또한 약간 긴 생크를
(기존의 모델들 보다) 가진다.

Meyer boxes on ly came in two variations. The True Flex mouthpieces and first Meyer Bros. mouthpieces came in the boxes shown below on the left. The later Meyer Bros mouthpieces came in the boxes shown in the right picture.

Meyer New York USA: Early Model:
These mouthpieces retained the rounded inner side walls and roll over baffle of the Meyer Bros. mouthpieces. However the body of these mouthpieces got thinner. The thin body produced a very nice resonance but sacrificed the solidity inherent to the Meyer Brothers mouthpieces. Many players prefer this resonant quality though.

The early model looks outwardly identical to the later NYUSA Meyers. The difference is in the interior. They have nicely rounded inner side-walls.

이들 모델들은 메이어 부로스의 둥근 안쪽의 양쪽벽,롤오버 배플을  그대로 지킨다.
어쨋든  이들 피스의 바디는 좀더 가늘어져서 매우 뛰어난 응답성을 가지게 되엇으나
부로스의 단단하고 무게있는 소리를 희생 시겨야 했다.
많은 연주자들이 이 응답성의 가치에 선호하고 있다.

초기의 모델은 바깥부분의 표기에 NYUSA Meyers라고 썼고 다른점은 내부가공이며
그겄은 에쁜 둥근 내부 벽을 가졌다.  

Meyer New York USA: Late Model:
These mouthpieces look identical on the outside to the earlier New York USA models. Inside they are very different. They have less of the rounded inner side-wall than the earlier model but do retain the same amount of baffle. The interior finish work is good, but not as good as the earlier model.

메이어 뉴욕 후기모델.

이들은 고유의 외부표기로 New York 이라고 하고 내부구조는 매우 다르다.

이들은 좀더 덜 둥근 내부벽을 가지고 (전기모델보다) 그러나 같은 용적의 내부 배플을

계승하고 내부의 마감도 쫗다, 그러나 나중의 겄들은 좋지 못하다. 

3) Meyer "Made in USA" Model:

These are the current production mouthpieces and were made at the Babbitt factory since the mid 1970s. They have a flatter inner side wall forming an almost triangular chamber. While they have changed from the vintage Meyers, they are the same general concept, and still a very good alto mouthpiece. They are still the standard of the alto mouthpiece industry.

4) Meyer "Made in USA" Model:

These are the current production mouthpieces and were made at the Babbitt factory since the mid 1970s. They have a flatter inner side wall forming an almost triangular chamber. While they have changed from the vintage Meyers, they are the same general concept, and still a very good alto mouthpiece. They are still the standard of the alto mouthpiece industry.

They use a different rubber compound than the current production pieces, and on ly a limited number of them were made. The chamber shape is more like the late New York USA models. 7). 메이어 뉴욕 리미트 에데션 피스.

메이어는 빈티지 뉴욕스타일의 피스를 만들기로 합의하고
빈티지와는 다른 피스의 재료, 즉 현재 생산되는 피스의 재료로 (Compound)

만드나, 오직 한정의 넘버를 새긴다. 이들의 챔버의 형태는 늦은버젼의
뉴욕메이어와 비슷하다. 그리고 마감도 범용의 메이어 보다는 잘 되어 있다.
