12.Hexagram 12 : Pi (Obstruction/ Standstill- Heaven and Earth).
▣ Nine in the Fifth Line[九五,구오] : Resting /Ceasing obstruction.
Good fortune for the great person.
"What if it perishes? What if it perishes?"
Tied firmly to a cluster of mulberry trees.
[Explanation]
[Nine in the fifth place] indicates that the inferior man rests,
so it is auspicious for the superior man.
Only when one acts with the mindset of "Will it perish? Will it perish?"
can the fruit remain tied to a clump of mulberry bushes.
[Commentary]
First, this is a memorial (petition) submitted by Suhyon (壽峴,수현) as seen
in the Owigwi-gam(五緯龜鑑,오위구감) :
"I have humbly examined the matter.
In Hexagram Pi (否卦,비괘), [Nine in the fifth place] means that because the superior man
is in a high position, he can put an end to the stagnation/adversity.
However, it warns against being uable to depart from adversity, Warning :
'Will it perish? Will it perish? It is tied to a cluster of mulberry roots.'
Even in times of peace, one should not lose a cautions and fearful heart.
How much more so in a dangerous and chaotic world―how could there not be deep
consideration?
Ah! If the Orlglnal Energy(元氣,원기) is closed off, the Way of Heaven is blocked ;
If the King's heart is closed off, the Royal Way is blocked.
If the Way of Heaven is blocked, the teachings for all lands cannot be carried out ;
If the Royal Way is blocked, the feelings and desires of the people do not reach the ruler.
If the feelings of the people do notreach the ruler,
there is no principle by which their peace can be guaranteed.
Therefore, to turn around the danger of fearing perishment and to firmly tie [the nation]
to that cluster of mulberry roots, there is no greater matter than connecting
with the feelings of the people.
I humbly ask Your Majesty not to worry about the people's feelings being blocked,
but first to broaden your sincerity."
The Nine in the fifth place of Hexagram Pi (否卦,비괘) represents the position of a strong,
central, and upright king.
Seok Ji-hyeong(석지형) stated that no matter how chaotic the world is,
as long as the ruler maintains correct politics that communicate with the people,
even a declining nation can be restored.
If the king's heart is blocked, the whole world is blocked.
No matter how stagnant and adverse the times may be,
if the head/leader at position 5 stands firm without faltering and corrects the situation,
the adversity is bound to stop.
This is called "Hyu-bi (休否,휴비 -cessation of stagnation) ".
Therefore, it is a golden opportunity for the superior man to unfold his Way[代人吉,대인길 -
'Auspicious for the superior man'], but for inferior men, it leads to their end,
making it inevitably ominous.
Confucius also remarkesd on this : "The reason it is called auspicious(吉,길)
for the superior man even in a time of stagnation is because position 5 has obtained
a position that is truly strong, central, and correct ['The commentary says : The good fortune
of the great man comes from occupying the correct and appropiate position'( 象曰 大人之吉
상왈 대인지길 위정당야)]" , seeing position 5 as the definitive place to turn around
the stagnant momentum.
"Gimang-Gimang (其亡其亡,기망기망 - 'Will it perish? Will it perish?) is likewise an extrordinary
cautionary measure for the superior man, urging him never to lower his adversity,
even when it seems as though everything is about to collapse at any moment.
Because it is a time of adversity, it forebodes an emergency situation with a high probability
of things going wrong.
Even at such a time, if the leader at position 5(a leader, president, head of housenold, or king)
behaves like an inferior man, saying :
"Why would the country perish? There's no way our househo;d will perish!"
However, the superior man stays vigilant against the level of risk and seeks ways to escape
the adversity, thereby surely attaining both Cheonhwa-Dongin ( 天火同人,천화동인 - Fellowship with Men) and Hwacheon-Daeyu (火天大有,화천대유 - Great Possession) to emerge successfully.
Yet, the adversity is not over just yet.
Remnants of inferior men dig deeply underground like "Mulberry roots" out of sight,
while above, like "gourd vines" pushing straight through, they eye opportunities everywhere,
constantly seeking a chance to overthrow.
Viewing "Posang(包桑,포상 - mulberry bushes/roots)" here as a reminder never to forget
perilous situations even in peaceful times,
Yoon Seon-do put forward countermeasures to overcome war/ turmoil (兵亂,병란) and.....
It was also viewed as the root of the mulberry tree.
Since the root of a mulberry tree is firmer and sturdier than that of other trees,
"包桑(포상 - tied to a bushy mulberry tree)" was ogten used as a metaphor for a solid foundation.
Furthermore, Dasan interpreted "其亡其亡繫于苞桑(기망기망계우포상)" as "a situation
where something is dangling dangerously from a bushy mullberry tree, as if about to break
or fall, "and set "包(포)" to mean mulberry fruit (mnlberries) hanging on the tree.
He also regarded it as an "omen that the nation will soon face ruin and severe danger,"
because when mulberries turn dark black, they easily fall off.
This is because the hexagram Bi (否卦,비괘 -Contemplation) changed into Hwa-Ji-Jin Hexagram
Progress).
Let us listen to the concept of "Gi-Mang (Peril and Ruin)" in the Xici( Appended Phrases/
Commentary on the Decision) :
"The Master said : Danger (危,위) arises when one considers oneself comfortable
in one's position
Ruin (亡,망) arises when one considers one's survival to be securely preserved
Disorder and turmoil in the country depend on whether the ruler's governance is stable
Therfore, a noble person (Junzi) does not forget danger even when flourishing
does not forget the possibility of ruin even when flourishing
and must govern well to prevent chaos
In doing so, both one's person and state can be safely preserved [
시이신안이국가가보야], as stated in the I Ching(Book of Changes)."
With the mindset of "Will perish? Will it perish? (What if it falls into ruin?)."
the fruit will hang securely onto the clump of the mulberry tree.
As written in the Book of Changes :
'Will it perish? Will it perish? Tie it firmly to a bushy mulberry tree."].
