어떻게 영어실력을 향상시킬 것인가?

이곳 영어 게시판에 제가 글을 올리는 것은 오늘이 처음인 듯합니다

지난 해 7월부터 세정이님께서 홀로 열심히 글을 올려 주셨습니다

그 전에는 또 다른 분 들께서 수고를 하셨던 걸로 압니다

우선 세정이 님의 노고에 감사드립니다

조심스럽기는 하지만 앞으로 기회되는대로

간간이 글을 올려 보려고 합니다

많은 분 들께서 보시는 건 아니고, 적은 숫자이지만

그래도 영어에 관심이 많으신 분 들일 거라고 생각합니다

저도 외국인회사에 오래 근무하면서 영어와 씨름을 했었습니다

회사의 배려로 외국인들로부터 개인교습도 받아 보았고

광화문 교총회관에 있던 서강대학교 부설 영어교육원

최고급 코스 1학기 과정도 수료하였습니다

홀로 독학을 하며 애를 쓴 것은 말도 못하지요

미국에 있는 본사로 발령을 받아 미국에 도착하자마자

3주간 신시내티에 있는 In-Lingua 라는 영어교육원에서 3주간

미국인 강사와 1대1로 하루종일 영어를 배운 적도 있습니다

미국 본사에서 수년간 근무하기도 하였고

4개월간 LA인근 7개의 소도시들을 돌아다니며

병원 의사들을 대상으로 판촉업무를 한 적도 있습니다

늘 외국인 들과 매일매일 대화를 하며 지냈습니다

앞으로 기회되는대로 저의 경험담을 나눠 보고자 합니다

제가 따로 타자해 놓은 이런저런 유용한 표현들도

조금씩 끄집어 내어 나눠 보려고 합니다

한 가지 걸리는 것은 세정이 님의 반응입니다

제가 잠깐 겪었던 바로는 작은 댓글 하나에도

아주 민감하게 반응하셨던 걸로 기억합니다

본 영어 게시판에 대한 애정의 발로라고 생각합니다

세정이님께서 너그러운 마음으로 

기존의 글은 글대로 올려 주시고

저나 혹은 또 다른 분 들이 추가적으로 글을 올릴 수 있게 된다면

본 영어 게시판이 더욱 풍성해지지 않을까 생각합니다

지금은 국제화시대입니다

누구나 해외여행을 하고, 인터넷으로 영어를 접하지요

구글검색을 할 때도 영어로 하면 훨씬 더 풍부한 자료를

검색할 수 있는게 사실입니다

세정이 님의 이해를 바라면서 조심스럽게 글을 올려 봅니다

아래 글은 제가 현업에 있을 때 직원 들에게 보냈던 메일입니다

저더러 늘 어떻게 하면 영어를 잘 할 수 있느냐고 물었지요

단편적으로 했던 얘기들을 모아서 어느 싯점에

메일로 보냈던 생각이 납니다

앞으로도 조금이나마 영어실력을 향상시키는데 

도움이 될만한 꺼리가 있다면 올려 보려고 합니다

인터넷의 장점이 나눔에 있다고 생각합니다

세정이님께서 허락치 않으시거나 혹은 전처럼 민감하게

저더러 몽땅 이 게시판을 맡아서 하라고 하신다면

바로 이 글을 삭제하고 다시는 이 곳 영어 게시판에는

Dear all,

I know that we all are struggling to improve our English capabilities including myself.

However it's not easy as English is not our mother tongue but second language.

So it takes a lot of time and effort. I believe that there is no short cut or easy way to learn English

but we have to try very hard everyday. Otherwise we cannot make it happen.

I collected good English expressions for the last say 20 years since I joined Elanco in 1982

and typed them up as an exercise to improve my typing skill after I rejoined Elanco in December 1998 as attached.

I'd like to share this with you now and hope that this may help you a little bit to improve your English capabilities.

I think that there are some important points we have to keep in mind to improve our English capabilities.

1.     Basic English structures. Middle school English text books help quite a lot.

2.     Use simple and short expressions rather than difficult and long ones.

Many native speakers cannot read or understand difficult articles in "Time" or "Newsweek"

but they still speak English very fluently using easy and simple expressions.

3.     Listening skill. Speed and different accents and words by different nationalities.

Listening to news programs in AFN, CNN, ABC, Arirang TV, NHK, etc. helps.

4.     Pronunciation is the most important when speaking.

Practise the pronunciation first at least 5 times rather than understanding the meaning

when opening the dictionary. And pronounce the whole sentences not individual words.

5.     Memorize native expressions (slangs) as sentences or set not individual words .

Let's try to memorize about 1000 expressions. Don't ask why.

Don't try to compose new sentences in your head but use a set of sentences as they are.

6.     Improve vocabulary easy ones in particular.

7.     Understand special terminologies regarding our industry and business.

8.     Read news materials in English as frequently as possible to update your knowledge

about what's going on out in the world.

9.     Knowledge about your hobby, culture, food, everyday life, etc. in English

If you have any ideas to help us to improve our English capabilities, let's share it with others.

Let's try to master English together! Yes, we can do it.
