For many people, the word germ and micobe bring to mind a group of tiny creatures. Microbes, also called microorganisms, includes bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and microscopic algae. It also includes viruses.
Today I will introduce you to some microoganism affect our lives especially digestion organ.
You know in our large intestine there are 100 trillion microbes. And it is much more than 400 kinds. So human intestine is factory what makes microbes.
The digestive system may be divided into two principle groups of organs.
one group is the gastrointestinal tract essencially a tubelike structure that includes the mouth, throat, food tube. The other group of organs consist of the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, and so on. As I said, bacteria heavily populate most of digestive system. So I have to choose one thing to give a speech. You know bacteria is hard to grow in stomach. But there was Helicobacter pylori. And It is already introduced in commercial. That is enough fascinate to me.
In 1982, a physician in Austraila cultured a spiral- shaped, microaerophilic bacterium obsorbed in the biopsied tissue of stomach ulcer patients. In 1954, Palmer announced that bacteria can not grow in the stomach because the environment is so acidic. But H. pylori can grow and cause damage in the acidic environment of the stomach by producing large amount of urase, which neutralize the acidity. It cause destruction of protective mucur layer. It leads to erosion of the wall. You know mucur layer protects the stomach itself from digestion. If this defense is disrupted, and inflammation of the stomach results. Then this inflammation can progress to an ulcerated area.
It is considered that Acid is the primary agent of this inflammation. And Therapy has been directed at drugs that inhibit acid release.
current thinking is that the immune system reacts to the presence of H. pylori and initiates the inflammation.
As I mentioned, H. pylori produce urase. It is an enzyme that converts urea to the alkaline compound ammonia, resulting in a especially high pH in the area of growth. you know high pH means basic. This bacteria is recognized as a cause of stomach cancer.
Helicobacter pylori Gastritis
symptoms : belching and mild abdominal distress to vomiting. Localized abdominal pain and tenderness, bleeding when complicated by ulcer or cancer.
thining mucus layer occurs, and 10 to 20% of infected individuals develop ulceration. Only a small percentage develop cancer, but more than 90% of individuals with stomach cancers are infected with H. pylori.
