Tech giant names Jun Young-hyun as sole CEO
거대 기술기업, 전영현을 단독 CEO로 임명
 
Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and CEO Han Jong-hee died of a heart attack, the company said Tuesday. He was 63.
삼성전자 한종희 부회장 겸 CEO가 심장마비로 사망했다고 삼성전자가 화요일 밝혔다. 향년 63세.
 
According to the company and industry sources, Han suffered a heart attack while resting over the weekend. He was taken to Samsung Medical Center in southern Seoul but died early Tuesday.
회사와 업계 소식통에 따르면 한 씨는 주말 동안 휴식을 취하던 중 심장마비를 겪었다고 한다. 그는 서울 강남구 삼성서울병원으로 이송됐지만 화요일 새벽 사망했다.
 
Han had a busy schedule in recent weeks. After holding the company’s annual general meeting of shareholders on March 19, he visited Shanghai for the 2025 Appliance & Electronics World Expo and held a series of meetings with local clients.
한 대표는 최근 몇 주 동안 바쁜 일정을 보냈다. 3월 19일 회사의 연례 주주총회를 개최한 후 2025년 가전 및 전자 세계박람회를 위해 상하이를 방문해 현지 고객들과 일련의 미팅을 가졌다.
 
He was set to introduce Samsung Electronics’ new artificial intelligence (AI)-embedded household appliances during a presentation event slated for Wednesday. The company has reportedly selected another executive as the keynote speaker for the event.
그는 수요일에 예정된 프레젠테이션 행사에서 삼성전자의 새로운 인공지능(AI) 내장 가전제품을 소개할 예정이었다. 삼성전자는 이 행사의 기조연설자로 또 다른 임원을 선정한 것으로 알려졌다.
 
His funeral ceremony will be held at the medical center until Thursday. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.

Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong will not attend Han’s funeral ceremony as he is in China, meeting with local industry leaders.
삼성전자 이재용 회장은 중국에 있는 한 회장의 장례식에 참석하지 않고 현지 업 리더들과 만날 예정이다.
 
"Chairman Lee expressed his deep regret over being unable to attend the memorial ceremony in person due to his schedule in China," the company said in a statement. "He extends his heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family."
회사 측은 성명을 통해 "이 회장은 중국 일정으로 인해 추모식에 직접 참석하지 못한 것에 대해 깊은 유감을 표명했다"며 "유족에게 진심 어린 애도와 위로의 말씀을 전한다"고 밝혔다.

Born in 1962, Han is a TV and display specialist, playing a crucial role in helping Samsung maintain its position as the world’s No. 1 TV brand for 19 consecutive years.

After graduating from Inha University’s Department of Electronic Engineering, Han started his career at Samsung Electronics in 1988, serving in key positions within the company’s visual display division and overseeing its TV business.

He was promoted to visual display division’s president in 2017 and was promoted to vice chairman in 2021 as the head of the Device Experience (DX) division, overseeing TV, home appliance and smartphone businesses.

Last year, he set a goal to achieve "a strong growth" in four future growth sectors: medical technology, robotics, automotive components and eco-friendly air conditioning.

During the shareholder meeting, Han apologized to shareholders about the company’s sluggish stock price and addressed concerns surrounding the company’s future as a leading tech company, saying the company will make “painstaking efforts” to restore its “technological competitiveness this year.”
주주총회에서 한 대표는 주주들에게 회사의 주가 부진에 대해 사과하고 선도적인 기술 기업으로서 회사의 미래에 대한 우려를 표명하며, 올해 "기술 경쟁력"을 회복하기 위해 "고통스러운 노력"을 기울일 것이라고 말했다.
 
“The late vice chairman led Samsung to the No. 1 position in the global TV market,” Samsung said in a text message. “Despite challenging internal and external conditions, Han devoted himself fully to his role as head of the Digital Appliances division.”

Samsung said in a regulatory filing on Tuesday that Vice Chairman Jun became the company’s sole CEO, due to Han’s death. This came just six days after the company appointed Jun as the co-CEO in an apparent effort to assist Han’s mission to restore Samsung’s competitiveness.
삼성은 화요일 규제 당국에 제출한 서류에서 한 부회장의 사망으로 인해 전 부회장이 회사의 유일한 CEO가 되었다고 밝혔다. 이는 삼성의 경쟁력 회복을 위한 한 부회장의 사명을 지원하기 위한 것으로 보인다.
 
Han is remembered as “a persistent and steady leader,” among industry officials, as he was far from being flashy but always finishes his job. A Samsung official said Han had always been stressing “products’ quality,” which led the company to establish a quality innovation committee last year.

Cho Joo-wan, CEO of Samsung's home appliance rival LG Electronics, expressed his condolences for Han's death after LG's shareholders' meeting on Tuesday.
삼성의 가전 라이벌인 LG전자의 조주완 대표이사가 화요일 LG 주주총회 후 한 회장의 별세에 애도를 표했다.
 
"Han made tremendous efforts for the progress of Korea's electronics industry and committed himself more than anyone else to Samsung during the past 37 years," Cho said.
조 대표는 "한 회장은 지난 37년 동안 한국 전자 산업의 발전을 위해 엄청난 노력을 기울였고, 누구보다 삼성에 헌신했다."라고 말했다.
