desktop vs countertop
What's the difference between a desk and a counter?
For example at a family practitioner's office where you go to give the assistant your health insurance card or to have your relevant data recorded on a computer. Or at a hospital where you can do all the above mentioned things, pick up your discharge report when it's ready, etc.
Desktops (desk tops) are specialized, lower-height surfaces optimized for seating and computing, typically ~30 inches high.
Countertops are higher (standard ~36 inches), durable, and fixed surfaces designed for standing tasks, food prep, or storage.
While both offer flat workspace, countertops are popular in DIY setups for their depth, while dedicated desks offer ergonomic, specialized designs.
Desktop (Desk Surface
Purpose: Designed for writing, computer work, and office tasks.
Height: Typically lower (approx. 28-30 inches) for comfortable chair usage.
Design: Often includes cable management, keyboard trays, or specific ergonomic shapes.
Material: Ranging from wood and laminate to glass.
Countertop (Kitchen/Work Top)
Purpose: Designed for food prep, retail transactions, or heavy-duty tasks.
Height: Typically higher (approx. 36 inches or higher) to accommodate standing work or bar stools.
Design: Generally fixed, deep, and continuous, often installed on cabinets.
Material: Highly durable materials like granite, quartz, laminate, or butcher block.
Key Differences
Height: Countertops are generally 6-8 inches higher than standard desks.
Depth: Countertops often have less depth (approx. 25 inches) compared to dedicated office desks (often 30+ inches).
Usage: Desktops are for sitting; countertops are typically for standing or high-stool seating.
DIY Trend: Many users now use durable IKEA countertops (like Karlby) on top of drawer units (like Alex) for a large, modern, and cost-effective desk surface.

Desk and counter are often used interchangeably. However, there are some small differences between them that even natives aren't always aware of.
Counters are generally higher than desks, and we use this word when we're referring to a place where transactions take place (like a restaurant, a bank, or a store), or if we're talking about our kitchens or laundry rooms where some sort of physical work is being done. For instance, I would never say a "kitchen desk," it'll always be a "kitchen counter."
Desks are used for reading, writing, studying, and storage. They are often (but don't have to be) made of wood. This is generally personal furniture — something you would have in your bedroom or your workspace.
Of course, there are some exceptions and irregularities here. In hotels and medical facilities, despite the front being where transactions take place, we (at least in the US) will say "front desk" or perhaps the "registration desk."
But there's no perfection here. A lot of this is based on context and individual quirks. What will be a counter to one person might be a desk to another person. If your goal is to be understood, then either will usually be fine. If your goal is to be perfect, as with many situations in English, there is no perfection here because English is a vague and often contradictory language.
