꿈과 야망은
하루 아침에 이루는 것 아니다
영어 이야기 2027
attainable
[ətéinəbl]
Prosperity is ATTAINABLE through consistent hard work.
번영 (繁榮)은 꾸준한 어려운 일을 통해 얻어진다.
1800년대의 사람들 (특히 유럽 젊은이들)은
번영의 삶을 그렇게 얻는 것이라고 믿고
그렇게 살았다.
살기 위해 삶의 목표를 세우던 그들에 비해 현대인들의 목표는 다르다.
Losing 20 pounds in three months is a realistic and ATTAINABLE goal.
삼개월 걸려서 20 파운드 (약 9.1 Kg) 줄이는 것은
실제적이고 도달할 수 있는 목표다.
그리고 현대인들은 큰 노력과 어려운 일을 거쳐서
얻는 보람과 목표보다는
쉽고 짧은 시간에 많은 것을 얻고 싶은 유혹 속에서 살고 있다.
그러니 이런 말과 거리가 먼 삶을 살고 있다.
ATTAINABLE ambitions require consistent effort and hard work.
도달할 수 있는 야망은 꾸준한 노력과 힘든 일을 요구하고 있다.
attainable 은 1300년대의 Latin 어
ad (to)+ tangere (to touch) 가 그 뿌리이므로
손으로 만질 수 있을 정도로 실감나는 낱말이다.
그렇다고 해서 손만 뻗으면 얻을 수 있을 정도로
얻기 쉽다는 뜻은 아니다.
그리고 현대를 사는 젊은이들은 육채적으로는
수십년 전의 젊은이들에 비해 성장했지만
성장 다운 성장을 이루지는 못하고 있다.
너무 쉽게 목적을 이루겠다는 헛된 욕심 때문이다;
ATTAINABLE goals are important for personal growth.
도달할 수 있는 목표는 개인적 성장에 아주 중요하다.
야망과 꿈이 없이 쉽게 '대박'을 이루겠다는
허황된 생각은 바람직하지 못하다.

오늘의 영어 이야기를 마치려고 한다

하룻밤 사이에 변화를 보겠다는 요구보다
소소 (小少)한 진보적 행위를 용하므로
내부적으로 이뤄지는 것이 목표에 이르는 가능성을 지닌다.

attain (v.)
c. 1300, "succeed in reaching, come so near as to touch," from ataign-, stem of Old French ataindre "to come up to, reach, attain, endeavor, strive" (11c., Modern French atteindre), from Vulgar Latin *attangere, corresponding to Latin attingere "to touch; arrive at," from ad "to" (see ad-) + tangere "to touch" (from PIE root *tag- "to touch, handle"). Latin attingere had a wide range of meanings, including "to attack, to strike, to appropriate, to manage," all somehow suggested by the literal sense "to touch." Related: Attained; attaining.

word-forming element expressing direction toward or in addition to, from Latin ad "to, toward" in space or time; "with regard to, in relation to," as a prefix, sometimes merely emphatic, from PIE root *ad- "to, near, at."
Simplified to a- before sc-, sp- and st-; modified to ac- before many consonants and then re-spelled af-, ag-, al-, etc., in conformity with the following consonant (as in affection, aggression). Also compare ap- (1).
In Old French, reduced to a- in all cases (an evolution already underway in Merovingian Latin), but French refashioned its written forms on the Latin model in 14c., and English did likewise 15c. in words it had picked up from Old French. In many cases pronunciation followed the shift.
Over-correction at the end of the Middle Ages in French and then English "restored" the -d- or a doubled consonant to some words that never had it (accursed, afford). The process went further in England than in France (where the vernacular sometimes resisted the pedantic), resulting in English adjourn, advance, address, advertisement (Modern French ajourner, avancer, adresser, avertissement). In modern word-formation sometimes ad- and ab- are regarded as opposites, but this was not in classical Latin.
