<A name="[문서의 처음]"></A>  <4월은 가장 잔인 달>  20세기 대표 시 ‘황무지’ 황무지는 미국 태생 영국의 시인 T. S. 엘리엇( 1888~1965) 의 장시(長詩)로 전편 433행으로 1부 〈죽은 자의 매장 The Burial of the Dead〉, 2부 〈체스 게임 A Game of Chess〉, 3부 〈불의 설교 The Fire Sermon〉, 4부 〈수사 Death by Water〉, 5부 〈우뢰가 말한 것 What the Thunder Said〉 등으로 구성되어 있다. 1922년에 간행한 20세기 대표 시이다.  제1차 세계대전 후 유럽의 정신적 혼미와 황폐를 상징적으로 표현한 작품으로, '의식의 흐름'의 방법이 쓰였으며, 〈성서〉·〈우파니샤드〉를 비롯해 단테·보들레르·셰익스피어 등의 작품이 곳곳에 인용되어 있다. 이 시의 구성은 J. 웨스턴의 저서 〈제식에서 로맨스로 From Ritual to Romance〉 중의 성배전설과 J. G. 프레이저의 〈황금가지 The Golden Bough〉를 기초로 하고 있다. J. 조이스의 〈율리시스 Ulysses〉(1922)와 함께 영국 현대문학의 대표작 중 하나이다. 원문과 대조하여 읽고 해석하면 어휘 공부와 원문으로서 느끼는 독특한 맛을 만끽할 것이다. THE WASTE LAND 황무지 荒蕪地                T. S.
