13. Cheon-Hwa-Dong-ln(Hexafeam 13 : Fellowship with Men/ Conciliation).....2
▣ Xiang Zhuan( Great lmage Commentary /
Heaven and fire together form Tong-in(Fellowshil the Men).
Thus, the noble person(君子,군자) categorizes clans/families and distinguishes things.
[Explanation]
The lmage Commentary (Xiang Zhuan/ 象曰,상왈) says :
As heaven and fire form a close relationship like humans associating together,
the noble person(君子,군자) must emulate this to recognize whether people belong
to the same kind/clan and know how to distinguish all things.
[Commentary]
Heaven is above, and fire has the nature of rising upward ;
thus, heaven and fire feel a sense of commonality and are close to each other [天與火,천여화].
This is said to be the image of Tong-in(同人,동인 - Fellowship).
Therefore, a noble person(君子,군자) should follow this example [君子以,군자이] by classifying
those of the same kind and discerning each thing individually to find points of affinity
Hence, even among people with different dispositions, if they cannot find common ground,
there is no way to unite and achieve harmony ;
if people who are similar cannot acknowledge their differences, the result is the same.
Dongpa (Su Shi)'s Discourse on Closeness and Affinity (親比論,친비론) states :
"Water being on the earth is called Chin-bi (親比,친비 - Close Union/ Hexagram 8 : Su-Ji- Bi)
as if embracing(허그,hug), while fire being together with heaven becomes one under
the blanket, which is called Tong-in(同人,동인 - Fellowship / Hexagram 13).
Though Tong-in(同人,동인) and Chin-bi (親比,친비) are similar, they are not identical,
so one must examine them closely.
Bi (比,비 - Union) brings closeness because there is nowhere it does not match,
while Tong-in(同人,동인 - Fellowship) brings togetherness because there is nowhere it differs.
Therefore, the noble person seeing this, must divide groups and distinguish things."
Accordingly, Wang bi also stated that noble persons unite with noble persons
and petty persons unite with petty persons to find their proper place,
while Asan mentioned that one reaches a stage of maturity only when one can properly
discern that the world is both identical yet different, and different yet identical.
As an example, depending on the place, similar kinds gather, and depending on the thing,
different groups are divided, which gives rise to good and bad fortune
The way of the noble person also begins with husband and wife and extends to heaven
and earth, so it is necessary to closely observe the way of heaven and earth
Only by going outside to interact with others can one know if they have become a person
with social skills.
If someone creates trouble with every person they meet,
they are a petty person who still does not knoq the world.
Studying through books is mere theory, while society is the testing ground
where that theoryis put into practice to determine one's score directly.
Therefore, book learning is easy, but field experience is never easy.
This is the grand model of "categorizing clans and distinguishing things (類族辨物,유족변물)."
Gong-muk-dang (恭默堂,공묵당) : Knowing that lower learning leads to higher reach
(下學上達,하악상달) Tong-in(同人,동인 - Fellowship).
Ga-am (可庵,가암) : Knowing that others are different from oneself is Tong-in(同人,동인).
Hwa-seo (華西,화서) : Knowing that the Yang of Tae-geuk (太極,태극 - Supreme Ultimate)
is the Yang's righteousness, and the Yang's ideology is the Yang's, leads to knowing Tong-in.
Cho-jeong(초정) and Baek-un (백운)'s theories are also significant.
The image of Tong-in(同人,동인) depicts heaven coexisting or partnering with the sun.
ln favorable tems, if a fish in flowing water wants to move alongside the water,
it must move its fins together [遊魚從來水之課,유어종래수지과];
like friends holding lanterns in the dark of night to illuminate each other's path
[暗夜提燈之象,암야제등지상], or sharing profits equally like Gona-jung and Po-sook when
benefits arise [管鮑分金之意,포숙분급지의]―this represents true fellowship(Tong-in).
Also, the Heaven(天,천 - Cheon) of Cheon-Hwa (天火,천화) represents upper and lower
(上下,상하 - top/bottom) while Fire (火,화 - Hwa) represents left and right two people ;
hence Cheon-Hwa(天火,천화) signifies harmonizing with others across high and low,
left and right.
The feature of this hexagram is that all other lines (爻,효 - Hyo) are Yang(陽,양),
with only Line 2 bring Yin(陰,음).
Line 2 is a beautiful, pretty woman with great credentials who, once married,
is a charming and wise wife capable of bearing and raising children well.
Therefore, she cannot help but monopolize the proposals and attention of countless men.
However, to men, she is a sigle woman over whom they glare at one another
and engage in fierce competition.
Thus, Tong-in(同人,동인) can also be viewed as fighting, contention, and rivalry.
