Chapter 21. Taught not by Speaking
"Subhuti, don't say that the Tathagata conceives an idea that I must have a dharma to teach'. Don't think that way. Why? If anyone says that the Tathagata has a dharma to teach, that person at the moment, slanders the Buddha because he could not understand the dharma spoken by me. Subhuti, a dharma to be taught is not a dharma that can possibly be taught. It is just called a dharma to be taught."
Then, Insight-life[혜명(慧命)] Subhuti said to the Buddha, "World Honoured One, in the future, will there be any sentient beings who will bring the mind of believing in the dharma upon hearing them?" The Buddha said, "Subhuti, those are neither sentient beings nor no-sentient beings. Why is that? Subhuti, what sentient beings are, the Tathagata said, are not sentient beings. They are just called sentient beings."
Chapter 21.
"Subhuti, do not maintain that the Buddha has this thought: 'I have spoken spiritual truths.' Do not think that way. Why? If someone says the Buddha has spoken spiritual truths, he slanders the Buddha due to his inability to understand what the Buddha teaches. Subhuti, as to speaking truth, no truth can be spoken. Therefore it is called 'speaking truth'." At that time Subhuti, the wise elder, addressed the Buddha, "Most Honored One, will there be living beings in the future who believe in this Sutra when they hear it?" The Buddha said: "The living beings to whom you refer are neither living beings nor not living beings. Why? Subhuti, all the different kinds of living beings the Buddha speaks of are not living beings. But they are referred to as living beings."
Words cannot express Truth. That which Words Express is not Truth
Subhuti, do not say that the Tathagata conceives the idea: I must set forth a Teaching. For if anyone says that the Tathagata sets forth a Teaching he really slanders Buddha and is unable to explain what I teach. As to any Truth-declaring system, Truth is undeclarable; so "an enunciation of Truth" is just the name given to it. Thereupon, Subhuti spoke these words to Buddha: World-honoured One, in the ages of the future will there be men coming to hear a declaration of this Teaching who will be inspired with belief? And Buddha answered: Subhuti, those to whom you refer are neither living beings nor not-living beings. Wherefore? Because "living beings", Subhuti, these "living beings" are not really such; they are just called by that name.
Section 21: No speaking, no dharma to speak
“Subhūti, do not say that it occurs to the Tathāgata, ‘I have a spoken Dharma.’ Do not compose this thought. Why? If someone says ‘The Tathāgata has a spoken Dharma,’ then this is like slandering the Buddha, because my teachings have not been understood. Subhūti, one who speaks the Dharma is unable to speak any dharma, and it is thus called speaking the Dharma.” At that time, Living Wisdom Subhūti addressed the Buddha, saying, “Bhagavān, will there be sentient beings in the next era who will hear this spoken dharma and give rise to a mind of belief?” The Buddha replied, “Subhūti, there will be neither sentient beings nor will there not be sentient beings. Why? Subhūti, the sentient beings that the Tathāgata speaks of are not sentient beings, and are thus called sentient beings.”
