Garcia plies a trade

Seattle Mariners pitcher Freddy Garcia's name surfaces in Red Sox [stats, schedule] trade talk on a year-round basis.
The right-hander gave his suitors a chance yesterday at scouting his stuff firsthand, doing so with mixed results in the Mariners' 5-4 victory against the Sox at Fenway Park.
Garcia was credited with the win to improve to 3-3 this season, but lasted just 5 innings and allowed all four runs on eight hits. He struck out three batters and walked two others.
The righty has been lively grist for the rumor mill involving the Red Sox, Mariners and Kansas City Royals. The rumored three-team swap would have the Red Sox shipping center fielder Johnny Damon [stats, news] and pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim [stats, news] to Seattle, Garcia moving on to Kansas City and Royals center fielder Carlos Beltran coming to Boston.
Garcia isn't opposed to a change of scenery because the job of pitching is the same no matter what uniform surrounds his 6-foot-4, 240-pound, frame. He just doesn't give it much thought. From Garcia's viewpoint, pitching, whether it be in Seattle, Kansas City or Boston, is still pitching.
``I don't really think about it, me getting traded here,'' Garcia said. ``I like to pitch and that's what I do, and if I come here I'll be pitching.''
Garcia had enough on his mind dealing with the Red Sox batting order. While the Mariners were teeing off on Tim Wakefield [stats, news]'s knuckleball for three runs in the second inning and two more in the third, Garcia kept the Sox at bay in the early innings.
The righty had control of his fastball, curveball and slider in setting down the first eight batters he faced. Cesar Crespo [stats, news], the No. 9 hitter for the Sox, registered the first hit.
With the Mariners up, 5-0, Garcia gave three runs back to the Sox before escaping the fourth inning. Mark Bellhorn [stats, news] opened the inning with a single to right before Garcia struck out David Ortiz [stats, news]. Manny Ramirez [stats, news] made it a 5-2 game when he launched Garcia's third pitch over the left field wall for his 14th homer of the season.
``Everybody has to pitch Manny careful,'' Garcia said. ``You have to be careful to Manny and Ortiz. They are like RBI machines. They see people on base and they are hacking every time.''
The Sox got to Garcia for a third run in the fourth, left the bases loaded in the fifth and knocked him out in the sixth by closing to within a run.
``Those guys like to swing so you have to make good pitches,'' Garcia said.
