1.인과(因果)라는 법칙

“아무래도 나는 경전과 인연이 깊은 것 같아요.

인연이란 그렇게 정해져 있는 것이겠죠.”

무비스님은 1943년 음력 9월 7일 경상북도 영덕에서 태어났다. 속가의 이름은 김진욱이다.

법회에 사람들이 모이면 ‘큰스님은 양띠 시다’라고 당신들의 나이와 큰스님의 나이를 가늠해 보곤 한다.

‘청산은 나를 보고 말없이 살라 하네’라는 시로 유명한 나옹스님이 영덕 출신이다. 불자들은 아침 예불을 하면서 ‘내 이름을 듣는 이는 삼악도를 벗어나고 내 모습을 보는 이는 생사번뇌 해탈하며’ 라는 나옹스님의 행선축원을 읽는다.

무비스님이 54세에 <나옹선사 어록>을 책으로 엮었다. 그 책을 24년이 지난 후 ‘나옹선사 탄생 700주년 기념사업’으로 영덕에서 기념관을 열 즈음 다시 발간하여, 기념식에 참석한 사람들에게 법공양을 하였다.

Ven. Mubi once said, "I think I have a special connection with Buddhist scriptures.

Maybe it's just destiny."

He was born on the 7th day of the 9th lunar month in 1943 in Yeongdeok,

North Gyeongsang Province. His birth name was Kim Jin-uk.

People often say, "The Great Seunim was born in the Year of the Sheep." and use his birth year to estimate their own ages.

Yeongdeok is also the birthplace of Ven. Naong, a famous poet from the Goryeo Dynasty (1320–1376). He wrote about silence and inner peace. One of his well-known lines is:

"The blue mountains show me how to live in silence." During morning chanting, Buddhists recite Ven. Naong’s “Prayer for Beneficial Practice.” which includes: "May those who hear my name avoid the three evil paths, and may those who see my image find freedom from the pain of birth and death."

At 54, Ven. Mubi compiled and published “The Recorded Sayings of Seon Master Naong.” Twenty-four years later, for 'Seon Master Naong’s 700th anniversary celebration',

he republished the book and gave copies as a Dharma gift at the memorial ceremony to all the people who attended.
