보혜사(保惠師)

성경을 읽다 보면 언듯 이해하기 어려운 낱말이 있습니다. 보혜사도 그렇습니다. 이해가 잘 되지 않해서 그 용례를 찾아보고 학자에게 청해 물어도 보고 나름대로 궁구하여 보니 대강 이해가되어 그 동안 미련한 내가 겪었던 과정을 나누려 합니다.

어리석다 탓하시지 말고 한번 읽어 주시기 바랍니다.

우리 말에 없는 한문적 표현인 보혜사를 갖고 와서 성령을 이해하라하니 생각과 헤아림이 미치지 못합니다.

내 생각을 말하라면 성령을 보혜사라 하지 말고 그냥 "하나님의 영"이라 하고 별도로 설명해 주는 편이 훨신 낳을 것으로 생각됩니다.

이 후에 성경을 번역 하실 때는 나같은 어리석어 이해 못하는  성도를 위해서 어휘 선택에 깊은 헤아림이 있었으면 합니다,

보혜사(保惠師)로 번역된 헬라어는“파라클레토스”인데, 중국에서 음역한 것으로 보입니다.

보혜사(保惠師)를 한자 그대로 풀어 “은혜로 돕는 스승”으로 해석하는 것은 피상적 설명으로 보입니다.

“파라클레토스”는 주로 법정에서 피고인을 변호하도록 판사로부터 부름을 받은 사람을 가리킨다고 합니다. 따라서 “파라클레토스”를 의역하면

변호자 (Advocate)

중보자 (Mediator)

조력자 (Helper)

위로자 (Comforter)

상담자 (Counselor)

등으로 번역된다고 합니다.

성경속에서 보혜사(保惠師)는 대부분 “성령”을 가리킨다고 합니다.

영어성경에서는 Helper. Counselor. Comforte. Advocate 등으로 번역합니다.

중국어 성경은 물론 한자로 보혜사(保惠師)를 쓰는 것 같습니다

일본어 성경은 변호자(신공동역)

그리고 문어역성서(文語訳聖書). 구어역성서(口語訳聖書). 신개역성서(新改訳聖書)에서는 “도움의 주(助けの主)”라하며

일본 정교회에서는 “위로하는자(上する者)”로 번역하는 듯합니다.

제 개인 생각을 말씀드린다면 중국에서 외국어를 음력할 때는 소리뿐 아니라 뜻으로도 의미 있는 글자를 선택하는 경향이 많으므로 중국에서 음역한 한자어를 우리가 그대로 의역하게되면 불충분하거나 오해할 경우가 있을 것으로 판단됩니다.

일차적으로는 한자어의 뜻을 설명하더라도 결국은 원어를 의역하여 풀이하는 것이 오류를 막을 수 있을 것으로 생각됩니다.

보혜사라는 단어가 어색하고 어려워 영어 성경을 찾아 보면 훨씬 이해하기가 쉽다고 생각하면서...우리 말이나 정서에 맞게 번역하면 좋겠다는 생각을 하곤 했는데, 정리를 잘 해 주셔서 감사합니다.
