We are living in the millennial kingdom now.
Subtitle: A Brief Study of the Thousand‑Year Theory Based on the Theory of the Immeasurable Century
1. A Proper Approach to Understanding the Bible
The Bible was written by people inspired by the Holy Spirit, and understanding it must also be under the illumination of the Holy Spirit. First, it should be understood that all of the Scriptures’ prophecy is not to be interpreted arbitrarily; prophecy is not ever given according to human will It is only those who are under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who have received and spoken to God. 2 Peter 1:20–21
The Bible was written over more than 2,700 years by about 40 authors in four languages, but the overarching theme has not been distorted; what was recorded earlier and later is organically connected, allowing the Bible to interpret the Bible. The inspiration of the Holy Spirit that enabled the writing of Scripture reaches every single point and stroke, and the overarching theme is God’s redemption through Jesus Christ.
However, it should be understood that this axial inspiration and accuracy apply to the original language, and that errors can inherently occur in translation. This is because there is a high likelihood that the limitations of expression arising from differences in culture and language, as well as the translator’s personal perspective, may be involved. Therefore, our belief is that a proper understanding of the Bible, through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, enables the organic interpretive function of the entire Bible to overcome even these errors in translation.
2. Perception of the Era
The Hebrews writer regarded the time 2,000 years ago as the end of things. At the end of all these days, He spoke to us in the Son. Hebrews 1:2
It is only natural, for God, who once spoke to His ancestors in many parts and in many forms through the prophets, spoke to the people of that age through His Son. Because the Jesus they met was truly the Son of God. This understanding was not derived from the climate, environment, or political circumstances of the time, but because they had seen the Son of God appear. They would have regarded that as the true proof of the end. It may be true in any era, but for us living today, discerning the times is also important. You know how to discern heavenly things, but how can you not tell apart the signs of the times? (Matthew 16:3)
3. Understanding the Millennium Kingdom
The millennial kingdom is a concrete expression of the prophecy revealed in Revelation chapter 20. Throw them into the abyss, lock them up, seal them over them, so that they may never again be deceived by the nations for a thousand years, and then surely be set free for a short while. And I also saw that there were those who had been cut off by the testimony of Jesus and the word of God, and those whose souls had been cut off by the beheading of the one who had been cut off by the testimony of Jesus and the word of God, and who did not worship the beast or its image, nor receive its mark on their foreheads or hands, but lived and reigned as co-rulers with Christ for another thousand years (the rest of the dead could not live until that thousand was completed), for the first resurrection, blessed and holy to all who share in it. And the second death, which had no authority to rule over them, and instead they themselves and the animals and their idols did not worship, nor did they receive their mark on their foreheads or hands, but lived and reigned as co-rulers with Christ for another thousand years (the rest of the dead could not live until that thousand was completed), for the first resurrection, blessed and holy to all who share in it. And the second death, which had no authority to rule over them, and instead they themselves and the animals and their idols did not worship, nor did they receive the mark of the beast or its image, but lived and reigned as co-rulers As priests of Christ, I will reign with Christ for a thousand years. Revelation 20:4–6
Of course, it is not that the expression "millennial kingdom" was used in the Bible specifically. There are several conditions such as the following here.
1) It is accomplished through the Lord’s second coming.
2) The saints who have fallen asleep in the Lord will rise and reign with the Lord for a thousand years.
3) During the thousand-year kingdom, Satan will be captured, imprisoned in the Abyss, and will not be able to deceive the nations.
This millennial kingdom is both the hope of Christians and a sensitive theological subject in which consensus has yet to be reached due to the wide range of views on its timing and form. However, as with other biblical themes and passages, this too was written in the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and we need faith that, through the illumination of the Spirit, He will reveal its true meaning. This attitude should also break away from the premises of the existing interpretations formed in each denomination and be based solely on seeking the guidance of Scripture and the Holy Spirit.
4. The Position of the Korean Church
The understanding of the millennial kingdom in Korean Christianity traces back to the Pyongyang Great Revival Assembly of 1907 and to Pastor Gil Seon-ju. It is an undeniable fact that the movement of repentance and spiritual awakening that began at that time spread throughout the country and became the foundation of Korean Christianity today. However, the eschatology proclaimed by Pastor Gil Seon-ju, called the “Doctrine of the Last Days,” advocates a dispensational premillennialism. He designated 1914, 1939, and other years as the years of the Lord’s Second Coming, and spoke of the Lord’s public return, the rapture of the saints, the seven-year tribulation of the Antichrist, and afterward the Second Coming on earth and the millennial kingdom. These ideas spread like wildfire, united with the Korean people’s desire for independence after losing the country to Japanese colonial rule. Even if we exclude the dispensationalist aspects of eschatology in Korean Christianity today, the fact that it still remains in premillennialism is largely due to this influence.
5. Biblical Relevance
Thinking of the millennial kingdom aligns with the view that sees biblical history as 6,000 years long. This is an interpretation of the seventh day of creation as one day and a thousand years, and thus a total history of 7,000 years. Therefore, if we had considered the year 2000 as the Lord’s second coming, and if the millennial kingdom had been established from that time, then everything would have come to pass, but it has not, and now it is already 2026. Therefore, the interpretation that views biblical history as a total of 7,000 years is losing its influence.
It is said that, according to premillennialism, the millennial kingdom has not yet come. One of the main reasons for this is, of course, that among the conditions of the Thousand‑Year Kingdom mentioned above, there are still some that say the Lord has not yet come, and another is that things are still being carried out in the world that are still regarded as the work of Satan.
6. 6,000 years
For those who say biblical history is 6,000 years, there is one difficult problem. Each day of creation proceeds with equal weight, so then every thousand years of each era should show providence changes of equal proportion, but in reality, that is not the case. So I say there is an important distinction every 2000. However, even that distinction is not clear.
7. Genealogy
However, the Bible provides us with another tool for understanding God’s providence through biblical history. It is a genealogy. Across the entire Bible, genealogical fragments are given in a total of nine places, and when integrated, one can discover that the total number of generations from God to His Son, Jesus Christ, amounts to 61. And it can be seen that the figures corresponding to the tenth element of each genealogy are playing an important role in the transition from one era to another. They are God, Noah, Abraham, Boaz, Uzziah, Abihu, and Jesus Christ.
The discovery of such genealogies shows that God’s providence through history was accomplished according to the design of the first week of creation. At the end of creation, God created Adam and Eve, rested on the seventh day, and blessed that day. All the history of Scripture that the Bible reveals to us is completed with the establishment of Jesus Christ and the Church, and the millennial kingdom, corresponding to the seventh day that unfolds afterward, shows that it must be understood and applied not in the flow of time, but in a spiritual state.
If history is divided into time periods, it is about a thousand years from Eden to Noah, a thousand years from Noah to Abraham, a thousand years from Abraham to King David, and a thousand years from King David to Jesus. However, according to the genealogy, it shows the formation of 61 generations in total: from God to Noah, the ten; from Noah to Abraham, the ten; from Abraham to Boaz, the ten; from Boaz to Uzziah, the ten; from Uzziah to Abiut, the ten; and from Abiut to Jesus, the ten. Thus, it begins with God and extends to God’s Son, Jesus Christ, showing a total of 61 generations.
8. Understanding a Thousand Years
The following verses are biblical references to the millennium. These verses speak of a situation unrelated to the millennial kingdom.
Before the eyes of the Lord is nothing but yesterday, a thousand years gone by, and a waning point of the night. Psalm 90:4 Even if I may live for a thousand and a half years, if I do not enjoy the pleasures of life, will I not ultimately return to the same place? Ecclesiastes 6:6 Beloved, do not forget this one thing: to the Lord, a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 2 Peter 3:8
In this way, the Bible uses the unit of a thousand years to refer to the longest period of time. And often during this period, a day is used as a counterpart to a thousand. In other words, a thousand years is a long period comparable to eternity.
9. The Garden of Eden
In the Bible, the parallel event to the millennial kingdom is the Garden of Eden. Eden is often thought of as a beginning. But Eden was the end of the process of creation. What was the beginning of creation? Many people think, "Let there be light." However, what the Bible records was that there was a prior state. “The earth became formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” In other words, God’s creation begins in midst of chaos and emptiness and concludes in Eden.
This perspective on the structure of the Bible is very important because it is applied identically to redemptive history throughout history. The existing doctrine of Christianity was structured on the idea that, in the perfectly created Eden, humanity fell, and for this, Christ came to restore everything. This understanding creates a contradiction: in emphasizing that the punishment for the original sin portion in Eden was too severe and that redemption through Jesus Christ was the key, it distorts the understanding of God the Father’s mercy.
In other words, the millennial kingdom is the fulfillment of the unity that was shown in the Garden of Eden, which corresponds to the final completion in the process of creation, within the historical providence.
10. The Meaning of the Millennial Kingdom
The saints who were sleeping in the Lord rise first and reign with the Lord for a thousand years. The king at this time is not the concept of a ruler of the world who reigns and rules. Christ’s office refers to the one anointed and appointed when a king, prophet, and priest are established. They exist respectively as intercessors between God and His people. Therefore, ruling together with Christ refers to the office of Christ himself, and our participation in it as human beings presupposes union with Christ.
Of course, the millennial kingdom will take place on earth. If so, now is the time to examine the biblical conditions for the millennial kingdom to take place on earth. The most important condition is the Lord’s second coming. It is unthinkable to rule like a king without the Lord. Therefore, this is why understanding the Lord’s second coming is important when we think about the millennial kingdom.
11. The Lord’s Second Coming
Matthew 24 is commonly understood as a prophecy concerning the Lord’s second coming. The disciples also ask about the coming of the Lord. However, the Lord’s expression remains unchanged as "the coming of the Son of Man." The Lord who will return is the risen Lord. The way He showed His disciples after His resurrection was that of a transfigured one. It could have been eaten, and sometimes it appears in a different form. Even when the door was closed, He would appear and then disappear. It is our faith that, apart from being freed from the limitations of space and form, the Lord also became the flesh of a God-like being who transcended even time. In this way, the Lord fulfilled His covenant by being present in every age, even in the past, and by uniting with His chosen children.
12. The First Resurrection
Now we must examine the character of those who reign with the Lord.
And I also saw that those whose souls were beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and the word of God, and who did not worship the beast or its idol, and who did not receive its mark on their foreheads or on their hands, lived and reigned with Christ for another thousand years. Revelation 20:4
(“The rest of the dead shall not live until that thousand years are completed.” This is the first resurrection, and blessed and holy are those who share in it. Second, death will no longer have authority to rule over them, but they will become priests to God and to Christ, and together with Christ they will reign for a thousand years.” Revelation 20:5–6)
Death and the grave are also cast into the lake of fire; this is the second death, the lake of fire. Anyone who is not written in the book of life is cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:14–15
Those who will reign with the Lord for a thousand years in the Kingdom of a thousand years are, first, the risen ones, who are “the souls of those who were beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and the word of God, and who do not worship the beast or its idol, nor do they receive its mark on their foreheads or on their hands.”
The covenant given to Abraham concerned the land of Canaan and his descendants. This covenant seems not to have been fulfilled during his lifetime. Because, during his lifetime, his descendants were only his son Isaac and his grandchildren Jacob and Esau, and the land of Canaan consisted only of a rocky hill near the oak grove of Mamre, which had been bought with money for the burial of his wife Sarah. But the Lord said, “Abraham was glad to see what I would see in my hour, and he rejoiced when he saw it.” Paul testifies that this refers to one man, Christ, rather than many descendants. These promises were spoken to Abraham and his descendants, and he did not refer to many as his descendants, but only to one: “Your offspring,” that is, Christ. Galatians 3:16
From this perspective of understanding, Abraham received the fulfillment of the covenant given by God during his lifetime.
Then, could there be no connection whatsoever between the state of the covenant fulfilled during Abraham’s lifetime and the first resurrection mentioned in Revelation? Is the first resurrection really something given only to those who, while living in the end times, have not bowed down to the beast that appears in that age? Or will all the advanced beings of the past all be resurrected in this end times in the flesh and reign together in the millennial kingdom? Could it be that Abraham had already entered the fulfillment of the covenant not to receive the year of the second death during his lifetime? We must recognize that it is time to change our perspective, which now understands that this first resurrection and reign in the millennial kingdom will be realized in the coming age in connection with the Lord’s return. It is that all the grace of the first resurrection is understood, through the presence of the Transcendent Resurrection Lord, as a history of grace accomplished in each of our own times, regardless of the era, for the ancestors of the past, for the generation 2,000 years ago, and for all of us living today.
13. Being a King
What does it mean to reign together with Christ for a thousand years? This must be Christ’s kingly office. The kings of the world reign over and rule over people, but the king of heaven exists as an intercessor between God and His children. This can be seen by looking at David’s case. He fulfilled the covenant God had given him as the agent of God’s sovereignty, and distributed it among every tribe and every family.
Now that we understand the millennial kingdom not merely as a historical event, but as the spiritual journey of all the Lord’s children united with Him throughout all ages, you will agree that in their own millennial kingdoms, each of them lived their final journey as this life of reigning as Christ.
14. After the Millennium Kingdom
The millennial kingdom is accomplished on earth. And that does not mean a thousand years of time. A thousand years, the longest time in contrast to one day, ultimately corresponds to eternity, which is even greater. All those who are united with the Lord in every age will, in the final journey of their lives united with the Lord, carry out the reign of the millennial kingdom and then enter the eternal realm. This is the gospel contained in eschatology.
15. Satan and the Abyss
I know that the Creator God is Almighty and therefore has no problem creating an abyss for Satan. Before appealing this abyss, here I would first want to focus on the expression “old serpent,” which refers to Satan. According to the existing doctrinal system, this serpent tempted Eve, and Eve tempted Adam, causing them to fall and sin, and sin entered the world. However, when the Lord sent out His disciples, He said, “Be wise as serpents, and pure as doves,” indicating that the wisdom of serpents should be appropriately applied at the moment of sending them out. The wisdom of Satan said, “Do not even try to know,” so how could He have said to His disciples, “Be as wise as snakes”? This is because the uncorrupted or restored serpent was sent to help life. We know from what the capacity of humanity to create the culture of today came. It is reason. Reason is rational, enables one to distinguish good from evil, and drives one to pursue better values. However, over the years, the madness produced by reason, especially group reason, was World War I and II and atheism, and I know that people are still acting as if reason is the highest virtue.
