"Who then is the faithful and sensible slave whom his master put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? "Blessed is that slave whom his master finds so doing when he comes. "Truly I say to you that he will put him in charge of all his possessions. "But if that evil slave says in his heart, 'My master is not coming for a long time,' and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 24:45-51
The wisdom of feeding at the proper time
In Matthew 24, building the ark and distributing food to the householders at the appointed time are treated as meaningfully the same matter. It is all the wisdom of those who wait for the Son of Man. Today, I would like to reflect on the part that says, "according to the time." This means that the ark's structure consists of three levels. However, understanding this is related to the structure of theology.
All the ancestors who longed for the fulfillment of the covenant did not let this time slip away. Naturally, Noah built the ark, and Abraham spared no effort to fulfill the covenant according to his own wisdom until he bore Isaac. Of course, it was not the righteousness of God, but it was by no means meaningless. The ark was the same. Without the flood, the ark was of utter uselessness.
Those of us living in this age neither build an ark nor fulfill God's will by bearing children. What the Lord said was, “to take charge of the people of that house and distribute their food in season.” Here, a conflict of understanding arises from differences in perspective. What kind of time does this "moment" refer to? Two perspectives can exist here. One can refer to the stages of spiritual growth, and the other to the ups and downs of life.
First, if we consider this period as a stage of spiritual growth, then, as Paul said, it is the division between a faith that is 'fed on milk' and one that is 'fed on strong plants.' Then, according to the stage of that faith, it would be the case of feeding the infants the first degree of the way of Christ and revealing the mystery of the gospel to those who eat fine food. In some respects, this seems reasonable. However, we should note that the Lord did not command those who had the law to return to the law.
The clue to understanding lies in the phrase “household members.” This should be understood as referring to Noah's family in the case of building the ark. This does not imply closedness. Rather, the meaning of being entrusted by the Lord is more important. Therefore, here, the meaning of 'time' should be sought not in the stages of spiritual growth, but rather in the account of the Creator’s Day in Genesis 1. In every day of God's creation, there is the expression, “It was evening, and it was morning.”
God’s providence does not proceed in a single, purely light-only manner. Evening, that is, darkness, is coming. However, this process of darkness is also part of God's providence. Therefore, He said, “For everything proceeds toward good through the cooperation of God’s will.” Though darkness is often thought of as evil, let us consider that He created the little light that governs the fourth night. Life in the world we live in is no different from that of ordinary people. That is the hour of the night, the time of night.
In other words, by applying the distinction of the “one in Judea,” the “one on the roof,” and the “one in the field” that the Lord spoke of, we should understand here the “right time” to know the gospel that can be applied to every area of our lives, both in faith and in daily living. A life in walk with the Lord cannot be one of isolation or closure. It is about balancing faith and life, and sharing both this world and heaven in character and daily living. There is the presence and companionship of the Triune God.
